Do you use clay teapots? What tea do you think works best in them? 🤔

Thank you for this video! I was gifted a clay yixing tea set a few years ago and never used it because I’ve been afraid of ruining it, but now I’ve decided I want to start and so I’m trying other make sure I don’t mess it up. This was very helpful, thank you!

I'm so glad it was helpful! Clay teapots can be intimidating at first, but the only way to truly ruin them is soap or detergents.

I have a tea pot collection, mostly porcelain but I have two clay teapots. One was a gift from China, shaped and carved in a dragon likeness which I rarely use. The other I got online 3 years ago and it is a Yixing tea pot, very simple and perfectly symmetrical with a closely-fitted lid. I decided to try ripe Pu'erh tea which I thought would be appropriate for the Yixing pot - so the pot came first then the tea which I had never tried before. I brew only Pu'erh tea in it. It is a treat and I use it only on special occasions. The Pu'erh tea is by far my favorite tea. It is rather expensive or I would have it more often. Thank you for your video, it is fascinating and I will watch it several times.

I just received my first clay teapot. It's had quite a journey- I live in India and wish I had a reliable contact in China which is literally a neighbor country) so I could get a genuine Zisha teapot without getting ripped off. Since I didn't my online search took me to a guy in Portland, Oregon who imports used pots from China, verifies and tests them, and resells them. I bought a small, 70 ml one. Cost me $150 including shipping domestically within the US. A relative who was travelling to the US just got it for me. Seems crazy the little pot pretty much circumnavigated the globe to get to me! I've been drinking Chinese tea Gong fu style for about 6 years now. I have some good Taiwanese greens and blacks from Wang Family Tea, some awesome Wuyi oolongs from Wuyi Origins, and an assortment of Sheng and Shou puerhs from White2Tea. I think I'll dedicate this little pot to either Shengs, or dark oolongs. Thoughts?

Wow! It really did take a journey. I like to let the pot choose the tea. Before seasoning, try brewing the teas that you are considering dedicating it to. You can then season it to be used for the one that you prefer the taste of.

Hello! I recently purchased a Theo teapot made out of stoneware. I was wondering if it’s okay to pour boiling water directly into the pot or do I need to preheat it first? I am scared to crack it. Sorry I am new to tea and I want to keep my pot in top top shape. :)
@teaformeplease
@teaformeplease 2 жыл бұрын
It should be totally fine! A lot of people do like to preheat their tea pots to maintain an even temperature during brewing. Try it both ways and see what you prefer. 😊

I’ve always been more of an English tea drinker/tea pot user and am only recently learning more about green teas etc (despite cooling the water they never taste as good as if I got them from a good tea shop [no not Starbucks etc]). Would you recommend a kyusu or a gaiwan (or just use my matcha cup and go grandpa style)? Is it preference or cultural? Edit to add: reading your post on “do you gungfu”.
@teaformeplease
@teaformeplease 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what kind of green tea you are drinking. Kyusu are designed more for Japanese green teas while gaiwans are my go to for Chinese greens. Chinese green teas usually also work very well for grandpa style in a tall glass or bowl (matcha chawans work great). Gaiwans are a good teaware choice because you can brew just about any kind of tea in them. I think some of what determines how we make tea is cultural but personal preference is always applicable as well.

It is worth considering how easy a gaiwan is to clan out compared to teapots.

Great info! I have 7 tea pots of varying size dedicated to tea type. I tend to get a new pot around once per year…next on my list is one for white tea 😄 do you have a pot dedicated to white tea? Do you recommend it?
@teaformeplease
@teaformeplease 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's definitely a slippery slope once you start collecting clay teapots. I don't have one for white tea. Glass is my usual go-to for them. I know some people who really like clay pots for aged white teas.
@EricBryan

@@teaformeplease yes! I never saw a need to use clay pots for white or green tea, but I was thinking it would be good for aged white…really it’s just an excuse to get another tea pot 😄

Have you any opinion on the shape of teapots? I see conflicting info around the internet about using a round, flat, short, tall teapot for this or that sort of tea. In your opinion does shape of the teapot really make a difference?
@teaformeplease
@teaformeplease 2 жыл бұрын
Shape doesn't make that much difference in my experience. I think it has more to do with the thickness of the walls of the pot. Thicker = more heat retention, which can bring out astringency in some teas.

Gently shake them out into the bin. You can then swish water around inside to remove any residual pieces.

I only have one clay teapot, just got it a week ago. So....I kinda brew every thing in there. Fortunately I don't really have gazillion type of teas in my cabinet (quite new to the tea world), so my pot mostly (but not always) use to brew oolong.

Congrats on getting your first clay teapot! Now is a good time to experiment to see what teas do best in your pot. You can always dedicate it more specifically down the road. I have four, but they were accumulated over the course of years of tea drinking.

@@teaformeplease first time getting responses from a creator. Yay! Also have a question, think it will be useful for others: my tea pot is blue, cost around 30 USD, the seller claim it is purple clay but it was made in Taiwan. Did some digging on the internet, a lot of the source say that blue purple clay do exist, but it is rare and it will cost a lot more that what I paid for. Starting to second guess if I am being ripped off and slowly poisoning my mom and myself.
@teaformeplease
@teaformeplease Жыл бұрын
For that price, it most likely isn't true zisha clay. Taiwan has some very good quality local clays though! Unless it appears to have been colored with some kind of paint or polish it should be safe to use. You can purchase an inexpensive lead testing kit to be on the safe side. All that really matters is that it has a good pour, brews tea well, and that you enjoy using it.
