Nice old truck . Back in my cabover day's when that cab first came out I thought how nice that would be to just sit up get dressed. Even a lot of conventional had the crawl through sleepers still in the early 80s. That white/ gmc would be a great money maker truck for the right person. Thanks for taking us along on your truck finding adventure.

Yo Jax, the last guy I drove for before buying my own tractor, had me driving a 1985 White-GMC conventional. It was flat gray with dark red stripes. It had a 350hp Cummins and a 9 speed trans. It was also equipped with a wet kit. I pulled both hopper and frame dump trailers with it. I affectionately referred to her as "Old Ugg" because just standing there looking at her, she was one of the FUGLIEST trucks on the road. 😵‍💫 I was on a dedicated run hauling corn grits to a dog food plant and one day as I was running across Indiana loaded with my grits I passed a diesel cop that was setting in the median looking for a victim. I waved as I normally did, and the next thing I knew, he was right behind me with his lights on. I eased off into the rest area just ahead of me and parked with him right behind me. He was smiling as he walked alongside my trailer (I'm pretty sure he was thinking he had a pricey ticket to write. He was a decent guy and told me that he wanted to inspect my rig. He went over that thing with a fine tooth comb and found ZERO DEFECTS! After he reviewed all of my paperwork and returned it, he gave me a clean inspection sticker for the vent wing window on my driver's door. The last thing he said to me was, "When I pulled in behind you, I would have never believed that there would be zero defects on this rig. The owner he is doing a fine job on his maintenance and upkeep! I only wish that ALL truck owners would be this attentive to their equipment. That would make my job a whole bunch easier!" My boss was pretty pleased to hear that, as was i!!!

How wonderful to play road trip games with someone as knowledgeable as Rooster. What a blessed young man you are Jax! Yay Be-Lean!! Truckers have needed such a beneficial health program for decades!! As far as I am concerned those good old trucks are so much better than the new-fangled ones. They are built so much better! Just like so very, very many other things they just don’t build them like they used to!! Safe travels jax and Rooster! ❤️🙏

Hey jax oldest trucker trick in the books.sure your dad may know of it. when you fuel up, every once in awhile, squirt a shot of deisel up under your fifth wheel. and especially in the fall so snow and ice falls off all the moving parts. it is a quick cheep easy lube for your plate to keepem moving and working great. Ive known that trick since i was a teen. I seen guys spray WD40 and all sorts of crap under there, the best thing is good ol diesel. and like a cast iron fry pan, once you gettem well seasoned under there do not stuff the ol wash nozel up in under there. keep them nicely oily and you will love it.

I had a 1978 COE Peterbilt 352 in the early 1990's. It had Center Point steering (non power steering) which was about 22 turns from lock to lock. It was old and beat up when I got it. The very first job I had for it was moving a paper storage warehouse from Jersey City to Bayonne. That truck taught me that you turn the wheel when the truck is rolling and not before. Despite keeping it rolling it was pretty brutal on the arms. By the time I got done moving that warehouse I had arms like Popeye...

Before Volvo/White/GMC they were Volvo Whites.......They were the first to market an integral sleeper cab with a hood and the first with air bags on the back of the cab. The 1985 Volvo/White that I drove for several hundred thousand miles was the best riding truck I'd driven after running a couple of Ford CLT9000s.... My VW had a b-model 310 Cat and a 13 speed with 355 gears and ran like a big dog while getting 6mpg, which was awesome mileage in the 90s.....Those cabs were also the first conventionals that were wide between the front doors, so they were very spacious in the front cab area..... I think all of the VWs were flat top (mine was)...... Loved that truck!

I couldn't agree more Jax on cold starts it's the hardest thing on a motor oil is so thick and can't get everything lubricated, there's a youtuber with a trucking channel that thrives on cold starts it's so dumb. I like all the older trucks to bud I'd love ta find a 76 Transtar 4300 that was my first truck. I'd love to find one and restore it and possibly make a show truck. Stay Safe.👍🇺🇸

Cold starts are the hardest wear and tear that you can do to any engine. I'm with you on plug that heater in and stop the stupid cold starts and omg stop revving the hell out of cold engines. In fact revving to high rpms are not good for any engine no matter how warm the engine is.

Power steering also was kinda sketchy back in the day. Belt goes. Hose blows. A big wheel will save you! No power steering made you plan your stops.. You wanted room to roll the tires , because rolling tires are easier to steer.

Jax - I’m curious: when you get a truck at auction assuming tags aren’t current, what things do you do so you can drive it home? Do you get a temp plate? Do you add the truck to your insurance policy and MC #? How much time does it take to get all the necessary stuff in place before you can drive it home?

Great question. I use to have all those trucks off and on over the years. Being TOTALLY honest, the new classics aren’t nice, comfy or quiet. They are all plastic interiors. Peterbilt quit making really nice, quality, smooth and quiet trucks in about 2004. Beautiful on the outside, but they just don’t have it on the inside. Also, I can’t bring myself to deal with these emissions motors. So much unreliability. Also the 225k price tag 😜
