"Project Lincoln senior adviser and former CNN commentator Tara Setmayer called third-party presidential candidates “a threat to our democracy” on MSNBC on Wednesday.
During a discussion on MSNBC about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign, Setmayer said:
I think that third party candidates are spoilers. I mean, history could potentially repeat itself again, and now more than ever the idea of a third party is a threat to our democracy. This is not the time for this. I understand the frustration that the American electorate has. People always express a certain amount of frustration with the two-party system, but that’s the system we have, and we’re not in a position now where we have two candidates who equally are, you know, who are equal threats to our democracy."

My impression yesterday was that this was damning, but learned today that (a) this was a Republican special counsel, and, more importantly, (b) the purview of the report. The comments strike me as complete editorializing because they are of marginial relevance to the aim of the report itself. It seems that they were included to score political points without really any testing or scrutiny. In a way, it’s better than prosecution: prosecuting Biden about the classified documents is a loser case (whatever conservatives might wish-there is a gulf of difference between the publicly available facts from that case and this of Trump’s). However, the special counsel fashioned a way to score political points without losing in court-rationalize not moving forward because if the feigned belief of the the sympathy Biden might evoke as a dotard. Biden has no way to challenge/test that. Obviously, Biden has had mental decline compared to even 2016, but those who’ve seen loved ones go through dementia know there’s a world of difference between that and general aging issues. So now I take this report with a grain of salt-there’s no way to know its truth and, besides, every reason to think it was inserted for reasons having a tenuous connection to the actual report. TYT champs at the bit to move forward with this stuff out of distain for Biden and the Dems, but it should slow down a bit. It goes without saying that, even assuming Trump was not subject to his own cognitive limitations, a lot of ppl would still choose Biden for the obvious reason that you’d rather have a middling dotard with middle of the way policies than a competent megalomaniac with policies you genuinely despise. For many liberals and moderates, Biden approximates one of those and Trump approximates the other. And yet some conservatives really exhibit outrage over the thought of anyone willing to vote for someone with advanced Alzheimer’s (not Biden’s situation, but, you know, let them tell it) over Trump. Hilarious.

Very well stated, my friend. It's sad and telling when we get more insightful analysis from the viewer comments.... than TYT, the folks getting paid to provide it. Their rhetoric, should they continue, will only serve to discourage their viewers from voting at all ..... when our entire democracy is at stake.... and we NEED to put differences in nuance aside and unite to save it. Biden may not be the BEST candidate, but he is the only candidate with any chance of beating trump. If the building you are in is on fire .... you dont get to bi*ch about the firefighter that shows up to save you. Let him get you out .... complain about his limp after.

For what? 1) Helping Trump to be reelected? 2) Providing Health Care to everyone right away so you would need to stop financing the military at once. The United States wouldn't be policing the world suddenly and it will be chaos for all of us? 3) Making the US more isolationist and protectionist so that we will be even more bullied by the US? 4) Making it even more aggressively about diversity, demonizing anyone who doesn't know how to call someone who is trans or demonizing someone who wears an "offensive" Halloween costume. In Canada, even Justin Trudeau was roasted because he had a black face once... He had no idea he was doing something wrong, quite the opposite. Diversity is all he talked about for the last 15 years or so... If you're white, you're kind of getting tired of being considered a piece of shit by default by anyone on the left younger the 30 years old, even though you tried all your life to be a good person... 5) Finally, Cenk is running for Biden's job... even Fox News wouldn't promote one of their colleague like that, it's embarrassing. So that's why, in a nutshell ;-). Is it good for people outside the US to support TYT?

I think some at TYT are angry about one policy and are extrapolating that out across everything while ignoring facts. Sadly unsubscribed. Edit for clarification - I am not excited about Biden, and definitely no supporter of what I perceive as genocide by Netanyahu; my point is that Ana appears to have let her justifiable anger over one thing cloud her judgement and obscure her vision concerning the danger of risking a Trump win. Both of these old men keep making verbal mistakes, so there's no point in making fun of either of them over this. I would support another candidate, but I don't think he's nearly as bad for the country as she thinks he is.

@@Mr_Timi1 I'd be happy to hear your explanation on how you came to that conclusion, and why you felt the need to immediately make things personal. I'm sure you're a good person, but that doesn't speak well of you. While I definitely don't feel that either of our likely major options is optimal, I observe what Mr. Trump says and does, and I observe what Mr. Biden says and does. I listen to the people who have worked with both of them. I then draw conclusions based on what information I have. It will never be perfect information and it will almost certainly be biased even if I don't want to believe that I *am* biased. That's human nature. I have voted for members of both parties before, and I'm sure I will again. But Mr. Trump, in my personal opinion, is mentally ill, lacks the temperament and never had the capability to hold the office. He does not just represent a threat to democracy - he is 100% the most dangerous threat we have ever faced to our way of life. Policy debates can and should be held. Differences of opinion should be respected. A single person holding themself above all others, crying "I am the most important thing" is antithetical to all of this. You are allowed to feel differently about this, of course, and I will disagree with that, but still respect your right to feel how you feel. Should you berate people, though, for not thinking for themselves, and when they do think independently you berate them for not following along with what YOU think, perhaps reconsider your approach to critical thinking and freedom. Reconsider your approach to how you relate to your fellow man.

It's hard to find Biden's "promise" to be a one-term president. Indeed, an early press conference March 2021, Biden said he expected to run for reelection. I will never claim to know all things Biden, but when did he make this promise? Thanks for all you do on TYT.

His spokespeople were the ones being clear on it, Biden himself just said things like (From Washington Free Beacon article: "Look, I view myself as a bridge, not as anything else," Biden said in 2019. "There is an entire generation of leaders you saw stand behind me." He later said, "I may end up, if I get elected, only having one term." So he did leave himself some wiggle-room, but it's still bit of a betrayal to people who listened to him.

In 2016, the most common arguments against Trump were about his flippancy and complete lack of political experience. I've voted in every election since 2000, and the concerns about Trump in 2024 are unique to him and the circumstances of his first term.

As an independent, I've written in a candidate in 2016 and 2020. I wasn't gonna vote for Hillary or Biden because they were/are useless democrats. And I'll never vote republican unless the Republican party becomes the party if Eisenhower again. He was the last good Republican, like JFK was the last good Democrat. Both these parties and the people in them are just pathetic and I want no part in helping one or the other.

So people asking for biden to be better on issues that are important to them are the enemy? People vocalizing how they're struggling and How bad the economy really is And wanting biden to help them are the enemy? Who isn't the enemy? Sycophants? Party zealots? It seems to me that Democratic leadership and too many within the electorate want silent complacency. They want people to stay quiet and to stop asking for help. They want people to shut up and vote and to expect nothing in return for it.

Normally, as a "much of an independent my state allows me to be," i would agree we need a viable third party. But i can't support it this election. I will do WHATEVER it takes so Trump doesn't get back in office.

@@Mr_Timi1 Why do you think a third party would be a good thing at all? I mean, Clinton won with 44% of the vote and was considered illegitimate by half the country. Same goes for George W Bush and Donald Trump. Why do you think having a president that wins with 34.9% of the vote is going to unify this country? We're not wired for that shit. If you want more than two choices you need to move to a country with a parliamentary system. We are a two-party country. Get over it. Get used to it

The purpose of voting is to win, not self expression. That being said, I'm not voting for Joe nor Trump. They don't deserve to win.

@@water78149No...You should really, REALLY vote for Joe. I know he's not perfect -- who is, but for Jesus & Mr. Rogers? -- but not voting for him for any reason, is legitimately going to bode ill for our democracy. :-(
