WE"RE REACTING TO ANDOR FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!
In an era filled with danger, deception, and intrigue, Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a Rebel hero.
About Star Wars Andor:
Andor, also known as Star Wars: Andor, is an American science fiction television series created by Tony Gilroy for the streaming service Disney+.
Beginning five years before the events of Rogue One (2016) and A New Hope (1977), the series follows an ensemble cast of characters during the time that a Rebel Alliance is forming in opposition to the Galactic Empire. One of these characters is Cassian Andor, a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins the Rebellion.
Andor was a vital part of Rogue One, the team that ultimately succeeded in obtaining the Death Star plans from the Imperial facility and uploading them to the Rebel Alliance. He and every member of Rogue One gave their lives to save billions of others.

I will say when Dedra meets up with the other characters, I remember real quick what she is and who I'm actually rooting for. It's like, "Oh, right, she's a member of the Imperial secret police. She's remarkable because her vicious ambition isn't tainted with idiocy and she is creative and devious in her evil thinking. You put her in a room with Syril, and suddenly I remember one of these two characters has something like honor, and it isn't the smart one. You put her in a room with Bix, and suddenly I remember, wait, I don't actually want my villains to be more competent and enthusiastic about inflicting pain on the good guys!!

Diego luna's acting as Cassian in this episode was FUCKING FANTASTIC and totally fucking under-rated. His entire grief cycle of denial-anger-bargaining-acceptance and circling it so well done. And the fact that you can see it ALL on his face. There are almost no full sentence dialogues that he speaks. He just let's his face tell the entire story SO FUCKING WELL.

The older man who first popped up last episode is Colonel Yularen. In the clone wars, he was an admiral who served alongside Anakin Skywalker. After the war he transitioned into the ISB as the organization's leader. He holds that position up until A New Hope, where he is killed onboard the death star when it explodes. You can actually see him in the background of the conference scene in that movie.

Cassian looks like that on the bridge because he’s just been electric shocked for the second time that day - Table 5 were in last place so were “disciplined “. As he’s just standing still in a neutral environment, he’s got nothing to look at to keep that perceptive mind of his occupied, so he’s in danger of giving in to terrified despair here. It’s pretty heartbreaking. Fortunately, this state doesn’t last long. Again, phenomenal acting by Diego Luna.

A bit of Info on Anto Kreegyr and Saw Gerrera. Saw calls Anto a "separatist". But not because he is separating from the Rebel Alliance, but because Anto was part of the Seperatist Alliance in the Clone Wars. Saw on the other hand, had an alliance with the Galactic Republic. So the Issue the Rebel Alliance is, that the factions who are now supposed to work together, were enemys in the last war.

This was already such an amazing show, but it really picks up now, and gets even better. I love how they show how evil The Empire is through Cassian’s time in prison. I mean most of us already knew how bad it was, but you really get to see how bad they treat these prisoners, and the new fans realize how bad The Empire actually can be.

I think he was completely unaware that he was a whisker away from some terrible trouble - he naiively believes in "law and order" and thinks the Empire thinks the same way. He doesn't know about Narkina 5 and the Imperial horror show that visits every planet it conquers. He thinks he was a great cop, doing good for the community ... not realising that he was enabling the worst ever regime! ... and thanks to Andor we get to see how truly disgusting a regime The Empire is - because it's made up of normal people who think they're doing a good thing, but are part of a horrendous collective structure that destroys cultures, and uses dead alien children's voices as a method of torture. They also indulge in the common right-wing fantasy "If you don't want to do the time, then don't do the crime" .. as if that cures everything, and gives them an excuse to turn prisoners into slave labour! Fantastic show!:)

I feel like every time I see these episodes, I pick up on so many little things in the writing and acting that I love. The specific terminology they use in relation to life in the prison, like "on program" is something that doesn't seem significant but it's that unique phrase tied to the prison that makes it feel so well thought out and believable. So many other touches like Saw demonstrating that real tendency for infighting among groups rebelling against a greater enemy, or the cruel genius of how the prisoners are set up to focus on competing against each other so they don't even have time to try and fight back. I will never stop praising the intelligence of this show.

The food sludge in this episode is barely exaggeration. US prisons used to (and might still I think) feed their prisoners something called Nutraloaf - which is a high nutrient, flavorless meatloaf that doesn't require utensils. It's been contested in several states as inhumane... and they can't even ask for flavor. Just cigarettes.

What I like about this show is that it shows the institutional evil of the Empire. It is not just Vader and Sidious, two space wizards wielding red lightsabers. It is a machine designed for oppression. People are nothing to them, except tools to be used up and discarded. They play people against each other, because that is the best way to keep them weak and complacent. As for the ISB higher up, he is not over worried about any rebel movements because they aren't organized, and he likely knows about a certain battle station, currently under construction, that will make resistant moot, in the empire's eyes anyway.

So this prison arc I see as a big homage to “THX 1138”, one of George Lucas’ pre Star Wars films which was dystopian sci fi instead of space opera like Star Wars is primarily. Star Wars previously had referenced the film via numerous Easter Eggs that use the 1138 number (ie Luke uses the number when disguised as a stormtrooper to say which prison block Chewie was originally from, its the numerical designation of the clone you play as in the game “Republic Commando” etc) while here in Andor it’s primarily the white colored halls and prison uniforms, the black colored guard uniforms and the general feeling it’s an oppressive dystopian nightmare within the prison walls

The ISB major is really interesting because when you disregard what side he is on he seems like a perfectly reasonable and good person. The meeting where Yularan is just not paying attention and the Major detects this and goes out of his way to bat for Dedra is great and shows that on the imperial side there are people who look out for each other even if its in a highly competitive environment and ironically if he was on the traditional "good guy" side he would be playing the mentor/father figure type. and for all intents and purposes the ISB and most imperial authorities probably see themselves as the good guys anyway trying to stop dangerous terrorists. What the major represents is that all walks of life are unwittingly the machinery of tyranny which is what is great about Andor, you have the actively malicious types like Vadar or the Emperor but what this show displays is the real banal people that allow tyranny and evil to exist, the apathetic followers and cruisers like the army officer at the Payroll facility or the judge who eats pistachios while destroying peoples lives without a thought to whether the letter of the law follows the spirit of the law, the careerists who either have tunnel vision about what they are doing or dont care and even competent and what would be in other times good people like the ISB major all form the foundation of a tyrannical state

"They slaughtered a garrison." It's hard to know if that's how scuttlebutt tales enlarge themselves or if "slaughtered a garrison" is how the Empire has propagandized the rationale for the PORD. Or if "slaughtered a garrison" is not an enlargement of an an indication of the commandant's family having been killed. Maybe the role for a floor supervisor is continuous flavor and not being fried along with the other tables or the floor, unless the floor does so poorly he loses the position.

So few people comment on Luthen 's store assistant. Luthen is enigmatic? Sure. But what about this woman that in the store is his mere assistant, but when they are alone she is equal to him? "I need you to wake up Luthen" And lots of other things she said which almost makes it seems she is running it and Luthen is her strong arm. Or are they a couple? Maybe neither and sister? Not sure her age, but she could be 40 and Luthen about 60, some siblings have big age differences.

The whole Mentor-protegé relationship between Leftenent-Supervisor Meero and Major Partagas is genuinly believable. The way Partagas supports Meero whilst not being over-baring or too harsh and at the same time offering her advice to help her better herself and succeed in her I.S.B. carrer. Partagas is clearly an early member of the Imperial Security Bureau's Surveillance Branch. He was responsabile for creating the Sector-based juristictional structure, each supervised by a Leftenent-Supervisor. Clearly, the Empire does not have the reasorces to control every single sector in the galaxy, as evidenced by the number of chairs and supervisors in the meeting room. Thus, the need to rely on third parties like the Corporate Sector Authority.

The Alliance to restore the Republic, or simply Rebel Alliance, didn't fracture in the days after Endor because the Empire was still in power, albeit in a fractured state, and it was too busy destroying itself via a scorched-earth tactic in the form of Operation: Cinder. The various power plays among Imperial High Command members and high-ranking goverment officials.The surrenders, weather they were spontaneous or via official channels.The countless desertions, the defection of those Imperials who realised what the Empire truly stood for. The various Admirals, Moffs, Governors, Generals and various other Commanders who decided to go rogue and become Warlords.The countless uprisings, riots and attacks by local rebel cells and everyday civilians rushing to join the cause. Thick-headed bureaucrats refusing to grant reasorces or reinforcments to aid their fellow Imperials as re-suply and stockage run out or were no longer available. Imperial Security Beurau agents and lone wolves carrying out terrorist attacks to discourage peace talks. Summary executions by vengefull locals with scham trails. Not to mention the Alliance itself who swiftly re-organised itself into the New Republic. The Empire defenitely had their hands full after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Dedra being ignored by the admiral: Yes, the Empire was racist, sexist, speciesist, etc. But the admiral was an admiral in the Republic, so he was mostly ignoring her because of her low rank and his dislike of the ISB. He prefers direct action as a military officer, not all this skulking around. But when she gets support from her superior, he has to reconsider his position. The head of the ISB is much harder to ignore than one of his underlings.

But you know that Yularen is deputy director of ISB at this point? when empire has risen, he resign from admiral rank and position in navy and join to newly created ISB. First he was an liaison between the ISB and the Naval Intelligence Agency. And in that way he build his way to the position of deputy director that was create when ISB and NIA was merged. Edit: Lio Partagaz is only head of ISB board in their central. So for me, Yularen showed more attention to Dedra's case because his direct subordinate supported it.

15:39 This is one of the biggest issues I have with reaction videos on this particular arc of the series. These are all inmates in an Imperial prison. A prison that most likely existed during the Republic. We are never given a full character dossier on any of these people. We only know Andor. Who is a murderer and a thief. And yet we the audience are manipulated in to accepting him as our "hero". Empire bad. We don't know what any of these people did to get here BEFORE the laws were changed because of Aldani. A situation Andor helped create. Empire bad. The ISB is busy pursuing terrorists and active political agitators, real threats to the security of the -evil- Empire. Like Saw Gerrera, who even the Rebels see as too extreme hahaha So we are supposed to hope for Andor's escape from prison.. to go back to what exactly? I LOVE this series but the moral issues it raises are through the roof as far as hero worship and hero's journey as well as hero identity. I mean we're supposed to feel like the Empire has done Andor dirty by this sentence because "Empire bad". But he did commit a terrorist act while stealing an Imperial payroll. Money promised to people not involved in anything outside of being employed by the Empire. So Andor might not be guilty of anything that got him arrested, but he is guilty of really heinous crimes he wasn't arrested for. And these prisoners could be guilty of far worse crimes. Including our beloved Andy Serkis. Who we immediately like because he's Andy Serkis hahaha
@akotarakz
@akotarakz 3 ай бұрын
Fair points, but don't forget the "evil" Empire is still bad as it pretends to be a system of justice, but at the same time incarcerates people, because a stormtrooper said they were involved in "anti-imperial activity" without providing further evidence and without giving the person the option to defend themselves in court. And no, this didn't happen because of the PORD. It would've happened the same, only the sentance lenght would be six months, not six years. Would you like to go on a forced labor for six months because you were going to the shop while the police was chasing randoms in the area ?
@12stack73
@12stack73 3 ай бұрын
Em no, most of the prisoners are probably innocent, we saw how the court system is corrupted, they used aldhani as an excuse for injustice and doubling exsisting sentences etc.. they need as many prisoners as possible to build their war machinery, this labor camp isnt alright by any means, empire is bad, its a fascist dictatorship based on Nazi Germany basically, so please stop being a dick by justyfying its actions. I get why many people become part of the empire, like it just worth it to serve as a stromtrooper when u are a poor no one, but for the citizens who arent direct imperials living in Core Worlds, its horror, u can feel the oppression from the things like hangings of people on streets, questionings and so on. This show shows grey areas to both rebels and imperials, but the bad vs good is still there, thats the core story of sw.

@TheNarrator82 3 ай бұрын
I'm afraid that you've grossly misunderstood what the show is telling us. Yes, Andor has committed crimes before, but he wasn't arrested and imprisoned for anything that he'd actually done. He was arrested for something that he had nothing to do with, in the absence of any evidence, just because a random trooper didn't like how he looked. The (imagined) crimes of which he was accused included things like "being critical of the government" that would be protected civil rights in a free nation (and is the whole reason that "free speech" as a concept exists). He wasn't actually tried and convicted, not by the standard of any free and democratic nation: no evidence of his guilt was presented, and he wasn't allowed to present any defense or evidence of his innocence, and even threatened with additional charges if he tried to argue for his innocence. (And he was absolutely innocent of the crime that he was actually accused of, regardless of what else he might have done.) As for the other prisoners there, do we have any reason to believe that any of them weren't put there by similar miscarriages of justice? They've all been "assessed as labor worthy," probably exactly because they *aren't* violent offenders who will be difficult to control. Remember the guy who was in front of the judge right before Andor was accused of having an unleashed dog that pooped on the ground. Is that a crime worthy of forced labor and torture? Andy Serkis has said that his theory is that Kino Loy was arrested for trying to start a labor union, which isn't a crime at all, not in a free nation. How many of them weren't guilty of anything, but were sentenced for imagined crimes? How many committed what would be misdemeanors or legal acts in our world and were sentenced to years of imprisonment? And we know for a fact that none of them received a fair trail, because we've seen what constitutes a "trial" in the Empire. And even if they were guilty of something, that doesn't justify condemning them to a life of slavery where 1/7th of the population is tortured with electric shocks every day for no reason beyond to motivate them to work themselves to death even harder. That's unconscionable to do to anyone. and there's certainly no reason to think that this specific prison existed during the Republic, given that it's here specifically to provide forced labor for *SPOILER*. As for the Empire, they are a fascist dictatorship, and opposing them is the moral imperative of all freedom-loving people. Yes, the series delves into the morally-ambiguous nature of what fighting for a revolution entails in a way that other Star Wars media rarely has, and that's part of what makes it so brilliant, but what's in question is the means, not the ends. Since you mentioned other reaction videos then I'm sure you know what's going to happen, and we see the evils of the Empire, not just in the huge, sweeping things that the movie showed us like the destruction of Alderaan or having an evil space wizard in charge, but in the mundane, banal evils that a dictatorship commits every day. There's no question that the cause is just, even if the methods sometimes aren't. The Empire *is* evil.

Wow, never seen anyone miss the point this hard. Yeah, the Empire is bad. They arrested Andor for no good reason and gave him a harsh sentence because of the actions of others. It's pure coincidence that he happened to commit a "terrorist" act. And yes, there could be bad people in the prison. Does this justify the inhumane treatment? Honestly, what the hell are you going for with this comment? Are you just a fascist in real life? That's the only reason I can see someone making a tacit defense for The Empire.
