I love how careful and fearful Partagaz is in this scene. It fits so well with the middle-management who typically has to worry about those below and above him as one mistake could be fatal. Brilliant acting by Anton Lesser

Brilliant acting, both on the part of the actor and the character. We can tell that Partagaz is carefully "acting" to emphasize the gravity of the threat "Axis" poses. The way he says, "troubling". Brilliant

*Indeed. It always starts at the top before it trickles down to the lower staff members. And Partagaz was definitely careful with his choice of words that expresses that the ISB should go after Axis & not just Cassian.*

YES! Anyone working in corporate America is surely familiar with that phenomenon. You're in a meeting with higher ups trying to make your point/sell your idea, and your Director shows how he attained that level by carefully demonstrating an Oscar-worthy "fence sitting" performance of obeisance. "I'll support my guy, but not at the risk of my own career." I thought Yularen was similarly perfect. Doesn't even make eye contact..."I'm listening." Right out of the executive handbook...

I think Yularan was commenting on the cost to test her and make her justify it, the actual cost was probably irrelevant, he just wanted to make sure that she actually needed those resources

This is how you write a strong female character. Her smarts and competence are logical, has good instinct not due to "The Message" but actual hunch backed by evidence. No one likes her and she has to convince and win through ability, she has challenges to overcome, and yeah the men around her are incompetent, but not buffoons.

@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse I think you're right too about the Major. It really adds another layer, she isnt some girl boss that does it all alone. She made a lot of sense for someone on the ground, but when it comes to higher ups who simply look at return on investments, it seems filmsy and too vague, all that changed when another higher up who adds credence to what Dedra was saying
@mingQWERTY

It's also clear that she's not fearless. Whenever she say things which may provoke her superiors she immediately backs off and when Partagaz supported her in this scene, she seemed visibly reliefed that the major had to save her

It's also how you write a morally complex character. The morality of the movies are so black and white. Empire=Evil. Alliance=Good. This is sooo much more compelling. I feel like I'm watching the inner workings of Nazi Germany in 1940. How did the average German adapt to Nazi rule? How did corporations change? The military? Government bureaucracy? How does any citizen continue to do what they do while fascism and authoritarianism grow? I watch all the comments about how Dedra is a "badass" etc, and I agree that she is a strong female, but I am looking forward to seeing the moral conflict as well.
@AngeloBarovierSD
@AngeloBarovierSD Жыл бұрын
This is how you write a strong -female- _character._ Any demographic (albeit human) fits as this ISB officer. Not sure why anyone is compelled to denote her gender in this show. All the characters are well-written. Her gender plays no part in the narrative and yet is still part of the "message" and "agenda" of creating interesting and diverse characters.
@barneseffect
@barneseffect Жыл бұрын
To say that gender doesn't play a role in Dedra's challenges is all out ridiculous. This is a world of men. Not that they're consciously supplanting her, but she is clearly looked down upon. Written correctly like this show is, I can take her seriously and brand her a worthy underdog. She uses tact and wise to maneuver her way to victory, she's very smart and cunning but she does face a clear challenge. And I absolutely love this dynamic! It's intriguing and thought provoking unlike everything else from Star Wars I've seen thus far since Leia, maybe even Padme.

Imagine if we'd has this calibre in the sequel trilogy. Things would be radically different. The utter travesty that they had Mark Hammil, Cari Fisher, and Harrison Ford back for two movies and threw them away like lost toys they were done with, is truly cultural desecration of the worst kind.
@derzauberer8605
@derzauberer8605 Жыл бұрын
You missjudge this in my opinion, it is more from where she came from, careerwise, that she is looked down upon. She was a regular cop/detective before and she got the high posting at the ISB by merit instead of connections of her or her family.

As much as I want to say you’re wrong, I think you’re right. Even in Legends, the Empire was also quite sexist in addition to the xenophobia; Tarkin actually had a lover named Daala, but she was stationed at the Maw Installation presumably because the higher-ups did not see her fit to be in an actual fleet for being a woman. Of course in Canon you do have people like Vice Admiral Sloane who made it through the ranks, but like Thrawn she was not seen in the same light as other Admirals (there’s actually a point in either a comic or a novel in which Sloane threatens to amputate another officer because he treated like a plaything, if I remember correctly). Dedra is honestly so fascinating. I hope Season 2 gives us more backstory for her.

*There are indeed some that only want robot workers to do their job without questioning anything, while there are others(like Partagaz) who welcomes ideas & civil debates amongst his subordinates that brings real results that benefit the Empire. So yeah, it just depends on the manager who's working the shift that's either just their for the check or their to make sure that the workers are taken care of while the job is getting done to the best of their ability.*

This scene from the corporate and federal security world was portrayed perfectly. I’ve been in the many meetings were the young analyst or agent was gung ho, and blasting through a report about how important it was, and their supervisor stepping in to bring it back to the correct interaction, it needs to be while the Director in this case, yularn sits and pretends indifference to test the validity of the plan
