The greatest truth about Andre was what his greatest pleasure was. When he got a break from the arduous schedule, he loved to go back to his childhood home of Grenoble, meet up with his childhood friends, and play cards with them. To the world, he was the legendary "Andre the Giant," but to his friends, he was just Andre. The only thing that had changed was that he'd pay for drinks.

I have to tell this story about Andre the Giant I was told by a mutual friend of ours. She used to handle all the travel arrangements for the wrestlers in what was then the WWF, and they were headquartered in Minneapolis. One night, as they often did, she, Andre, Terry "Hulk" Hogan, some spouses and family members all went out to dinner one of the finer restaurants in the twin cities. When it came time for dessert, the waiter went over the dessert menu and mentioned how good their cheesecake was. So, Andre told the waiter "I'll have cheesecake." The waiter promptly returned with a slice of their cheesecake. Andre looked down at the slice with a very perplexed look on his face, then looked up at the waiter in the same way. Noticing this, the waiter asked if anything was wrong. Andre looked to him holding his giant hands together forming a wedge and said "no, not cheesecake." Then he spread his hand outward making a huge circle shape and said "cheesecake!" He wanted the entire cheesecake...not a puny little slice. The waiter brought him the entire cheesecake, which he proceeded to consume in its entirety. When finished, he looked at everyone around the table and said in his deep voice "that was a good after dinner snack." He then ordered another one to go. That's my only Andre the Giant story.
@Jtronique9 жыл бұрын
He loved the Frommage. lol. in the Earliest Known Footage of Andre videos, you can see him cutting a wedge of cheese from the serving plate and then taking the larger portion, leaving the wedge on the plate. it seems as if this was one of his favorite jokes, WC Fields had an old comedy routine with this cutting the wedge and taking the larger portion for himself in the old days with a cake. Also in the French sense of humor it would have been seen as more polite to take a smaller than normal portion, hence the term "petits fours" lol so I'm sure that expressing his decadence in food was probably as enjoyable as his drink. Lovely story by the way. :) My father has a second generation copy of a hand that Andre traced for his friend who was a customs agent in Canada :)

+pete lewis I first saw Andre 40 years ago, in the now-defunct AWA, the American Wrestling Association. A young Gene Okerlund was the announcer/interviewer there (before both he and Andre later migrated over to the WWF, along with a lot of other wrestlers Vince McMahon lured away). Anyway, in that first tv interview I saw, Okerlund was asking Andre all those same kinds of questions: his size, his custom-made shoe and jacket size, and all that; and Andre accomodated him. It really is unfortunate that so many in society gawk at people who are of unusual size just as they gawk at a disabled person with an unusual walk (and then all the questions come, "How did you get that?" etc). Society has so much to learn!

I wept when Andre died. My favourite story is when he and Dusty Rhodes stole a horse drawn carriage. Andre was a lover not a fighter. He was a gentle giant. I miss him as all his fans do. A great soul.

The world is not made for a man Andre's size. Famous as he was ..when your different than everyone else it can be an extremely lonely life,no one to relate to,always getting stares...not to mention we all need love. He had some close friends and he drank to deal with his lonliness but he tried to make the best out of life with the fame his size brought him...sad...

Was lucky to meet Andre in 1989.. never forget it! distinctively remember the height of him.. but his head stood right out, soo huge! hard to tell on tv.. have to see him in person to really understand his size!!

Met Andre and Ted Dibiase after an exhibition at a high school in Brooklyn around 1980 when I was 17. I remember my eyes being at the same level as Andre's middle back. Got both their autographs on the program, wish I still had it today. Dibiase asked us for directions

I was about 14 years old in the mid 70s and I went to a wrestling match in Winston-Salem, NC where Andre was wrestling that night. I went to the area where the wrestlers came out and got next to the curtain. Andre stuck his hand through the curtain while he was peeking out. I was about 2 feet from him and could not believe the size of his hand. What a massive man. RIP Andre.

With Andre's drinking stories, it's too bad they didn't have him guest star on an episode of Cheers....him and Norm in a drinking contest would have been classic.

Imagine Andre consoling Norm after he lost. "Don't feel bad, Norm. After all, you aren't a giant, but you held your own. It's not me everyone greets when I walk in the door. It's you. That means more than a drinking contest. It's friends. They marvel at me - how much I can drink. They love you."

It was late 80s I was driving Taxi in Las Vegas and I got a radio call late one night to go down the ramp in the back of the Thomas and Mack Center. Sure enough Andre the Giant and his manager jump in the back of my taxi. His manager talked the whole time and Andre just seem to smile to himself he had a beautiful aura about him like a gentle creature. I'll never forget that.

Simon Dearing Acromegaly disproportinately afflicts the Head , rib cage , Hands and Feet . Check the French Angel Maurice Tillet . He didn't get the giantism , he was only 5'8" but his head , and chest were massive . His a romegaly hit after bone growth plates had closed in young adulthood , so his body grew dense and wide insteadof taller. Andre had allof it .
