One of the upgrades in this 1972 Classic Honda was to sort the ignition system. When the bike came into the workshop it was very difficult to start & when running wasn't smooth, often misfiring & under powered.
Initial inspections found may faults with the Primary ignition circuit, excessive voltage drops in the wiring, connectors, ignition switch & even the kill switch!
In previous Episodes these issues were all fixed & now it's time for the icing on the cake - Electronic Ignition! This kit from Dynatek appears, on the face of it to be relatively easy to install & setup - I guess there's only one way to find out....
Enjoy

This was extremely helpful. I brought my laptop to the garage while I installed the Dynatek ignition on my CB750 K0. I also replaced the crappy connectors, which was the plan as soon as I opened the box and saw what was supplied. The last thing to be done is to adjust the cam chain with the help of #1881, then just patiently wait till winter is over. Thanks for making it easier to get this old bike back on the road.

Honestly I watched due to the cute girl in the title sequence but stayed for the amazing detailed information on wiring the ignition. I currently am installing an electronic ignition on my CB750A (yes a Hondamatic)and your advice has been invaluable. I had no idea what I was doing. The coil install video was also incredibly informative. Thank you for your hard work.

I used that scotch lock when I first installed mine. I was new to bikes and didn't know any better. I've since gone back and removed it. I got some proper connectors and used the black/white wire going to the rear brake switch for power. I cut off the single female connector on that black/white wire, put a double female connector on it, then put a proper male connector on the red wire. Works great. The engine sounds so weird with no exhaust pipes.

I have a CB750 (engine 1976, Carbs 1977, frame and Front end, chopped up CB750F Super Sport) and so many parts from other bikes, I call it my Frankenbike. Decided to go with electronic ignition on "Frank". Watched this video about 20 times, until I could recite it in my sleep, with a Brit accent no less. Got the ignition in and wired, and it started so smooth and runs so much better. Problem is, the Emgo ignition lock switch has a dead lead for the rear lights, where no power goes to the Brown-white no matter what... Shit. Getting a new switch sent soon. Can't wait to get frank out screaming thru town. Thanks Andy!

Like the use of the test light in this and last video. I never even considered that in years past for precision setting of spark type ignition firing. At the end when you started up, the sparks appeared to be hotter than the previous points set up from the earlier video based on the blue at the exhaust ports.

Hi Andy, first thanks for your vids, just great! I do have a question about this installation, the fact that the dyna ignition comes with small wires, so the double ones you've mounted from the coils become now useless no?
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
No. Not really. Voltage drop depends on not only wire thickness but length too. By increasing the vast majority of the wire thickness in the ignition circuit the volt drop is greatly reduced this providing the coils with a higher voltage. Cheers Andy

You commented at 16:02 "do not drop it" referring to the rotor with the small magnet. Was that just a quip or is there real potential to damage that part if dropped? I was just working on my Dyna S Ignition on my RD400 and dropped that part. Now my ignition is not working :(.
@marvindavis8705
@marvindavis8705 Жыл бұрын
There is one setting that was left out of all the installs on You tube. That is the space between the magnet on the rotor and the 'pickups' on the modules. If set too far out the corresponding cylinders will misfire. I set mine but forgot what the setting was, maybe forty two thousands?? can you confirm the range??

Thank you for sharing! What a detailed video. For my Honda CB 900 '82 I will go for this upgrade, but I don't know if I need the Dyna S or the Dyna 2000 or even the Dyna 2000i? When you fire it up, I notice the green Dynatek ignition coil 3Ohm pair and in my project I will replace this too. One thing I can't find any information og KZfaq's on is the Spark Units from OKI on these Honda CB 750/900. What the heck do they do and do you need them, if you upgrade with all this?

Ah...the electronic ignition provides much more accurate ignition timing. The stronger spark comes from reducing bolt drops in the circuit - check out the video fitting an ignition relay to eliminate the ignition switch & kill switch from the Coil primary circuit. Hope that helps. Cheers Andy

Hi Justino, likely it's the oil seal that sits behind the ignition plate. Unfortunately to replace this seal you'll have to remove the ignition cam & plate to gain access. Be sure to mark its position accurately or better still, you'll have to re-set the ignition timing. Hope this helps Andy

@@AndyMechanic Hi! Had an oil leak there too on my 1969 CB 750. Thought it was the oil seal too and replaced it (a bit hard to do), but it was the O-ring that sits on the thin shaft that holds the timing cam mekanism that was the culprit. That O-ring is very easy to replace.
