If you were sad thinking that the movie was 31 years ago because it likely means that the actor who played the sheriff is dead now, you would be right. Richard Farnsworth died in 2000 and tragically he had terminal cancer that was so painful that he shot himself at the age of 80.

Richard Farnsworth, who played Buster, was a stuntman and supporting actor for decades before Misery. He became a minor star when he starred in The Grey Fox, a Canadian film from the early 80´s, but his major breakthrough was when he was Oscar nominated for Best Actor for his heartwrenching performance in the incredible The Straight Story, from 1999, which you absolutely must see. Sadly, he was suffering from terminal cancer. It left him partially paralysed and the following year, seeing no way out and an inevitable decline, he killed himself with a rifle. Rumour has it it was his cowboy way. He lived his life entirely on his own terms and he was determined to die on his own terms too. I don´t know if this is true, but it is the only solace I can find in such a tragic end.

Yes a bent pin like that will open an old style padlock. I learned to open a lock with a bent paper clip from a KZfaq video, when I lost my key to a storage unit, and the paper clip worked.

I always felt that in order to enjoy both a movie and a book, it is best to watch the movie first, as the books tend to be far more detailed and expand on the events

I freakin love this film, the actors were perfectly cast and Kathy Bates is a total bad ass, she is so good at playing crazy...lover her! So glad you reacted to this film. If you like Stephen King you should check out a show/ seeies called Castle Rock, it's based off the Stephen king universe. There are two seasons so far and even though they are their own story both are tied together by a character. The second season focuses on the back story of a young Annie Wilkes and the actress does a very good job at portraying her in my opinion.

They toned down the more graphic violence just a bit cause they actually had to show it instead of just letting people imagine it. She hobbles him instead of amputating him and in the book she also cuts off one of his thumbs with an electric knife and they left that completely out.

Steven king has had to deal with some seriously crazy fans. This was probably his easiest story to write.

I've driven past Steven King's house before, as it's only a couple hours away from where I live in Maine. My mother is also a huge fan of Kathy Bates, so I was pretty excited that I saw this on your channel, but Green Mile is one of my favorite movies. You should also watch My Boy Jack. It's a great war movie about the Great War told from the homefront's perspective.

I suspect the reason they didn't use the axe that you were asking about was that they felt that Stanley Kubrick, a decade earlier with his "Shining" adaptation, had used up all the "axe points" permitted in Stephen King adaptations forever.

Yet another great great James Caan film is "Brian's Song - 1971, stunning performance! Ranked 7th in the list of top "guy cry" films. Critics have called the movie one of the finest telefims ever made!!! Suggest you place this on your list to watch.

One of the better adaptations of Stephen King stories. Up there with the Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me and The Green Mile. I agree with you on liking The Shining book and not the movie. Another great movie adaptation is The Princess Bride also directed by Rob Reiner.

Scary thing about this movie is I think I dated an Annie Wilks. Like a rollercoaster with amazing highs and overwhelming lows.

King said in an interview that of all his books that have been made into movies the only one (movie) he didn’t like was The Shining.

I had read in 97, the Green Mile, I loved and when I saw the movie, I was slightly disappointed but today I appreciate it (to say, the movie is not always 100% of the book ) I am always delighted to watch your reactions with a hot chocolate every time.☕😊

I highly recommend "Intensity" by Dean Koontz. That book actually frightened me. They made it into a two part mini-series made for television. It's pretty good. John C. McGinley plays the part of..... (No spoilers) Let's just say I love everything he does. And "Pet Sematary" is one of King's most disturbing books. Bobby pins, it depends on the door knob. Most interior doorknobs that can lock have an internal button that if you press it down, it can undo the locking mechanism. Older knobs sometimes have an internal latch that when flipped with a key can unlock. It’s possible, but not easy.

As a locksmith I can tell you that with that type of lock, if it was kept clean and lubricated a good stiff bobby pin would be able to lock and unlock the door. It might take some time to master the technique though.

That year sounds about right for the movie misery because when I was in the United States Marine Corps from 1989 until 1993 we were flying from Okinawa, Japan to Saudi Arabia during operation desert shield/storm in the movie misery we saw it three times lol

Kathy Bates was a great Annie Wilkes, but they toned her down quite a bit from the book version of her. Still one of the best SK book to movie adaptations. EDIT: and yes if the lock is old enough it will work, as you may remember in the book Paul learned from a gang member or criminal i believe how to pick a lock for another book he wrote so that was how he knew how to do it.

Also remember when they shoot a movie they do shoot extra scenes that end up getting cut, they also shoot a scene multiple ways, like his feet being amputated may have been considered or even shot but sometimes it's deemed too graphic or may effect the films rating

In order to make a book justice, the movie does have to have differences. For one, the movie has to surprise even those who have read the book. A great example of that is Stephen King's The Shining, which is a great book - and which twists things around in the movie to leave everyone not knowing how it will end, even if you have read the book. And it does that while being just as good as the book. In this case, the same happens. She uses a sledge hammer instead of an ax, and I find that a good choice - almost more gruesome, but it makes for less gore, and it's difficult to convincingly film someone not having their feet. And the ending... it is almost more horror filled to realize what he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

Great to see someone else who was disappointed in the film version of The Shining. So much was changed that I wonder why they bothered to base it on King's book. Another King adaptation that made infuriating changes was "The Dead Zone". The best King adaptations IMO are "Pet Sematary", "The Mist", "Cujo" (even though a lot was left out and they changed the ending), " The Shawshank Redemption", and "The Green Mile". "Cat's Eye" is a good anthology film that adapts two of King's short stories and a story he wrote for the film.

If you like Annie Wilkes as a character, they use her as a main character in season 2 of Castle Rock on Hulu. A lot of good Stephen King ties throughout that whole series.

I mean watching movie first & then reading the novel you picture in your mind how the main characters look.. but reading the novel first.... you get much more details on the story... so i have no idea which is better... lol

I love reading Stephen KING as well. They are always so easy to get into. I read pet sematary in Norwegian. Found it for free somewhere. Been reading his books since 1988. Have read almost all of them. My favorites are Thinner, Gerald’s game, Misery and maybe Apt pupil from different seasons. One of his many collection of short stories.

Books as movies / series: For Stephen King, _The Stand_ and _Firestarter._ From what I remember The Stand made some of the characters out to be either rougher or more pathetic than the series, both good and evil, a few characters lumped into one for brevity; but also a bit more explanation for why Harold Laudner did what he did. Firestarter was pretty graphic, alot more disturbing than the movie, more in depth about the physical pain associated with telekinesis, but the major story beats were there. Charlie was essentially Akira. Other books as cinema? _Dune, The Godfather, No Country For Old Men, The First Circle, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Three Days of the Condor, The Onion Field, Kwaidan._ In some cases the movie does more justice to the characters than the book.

I don't know if you've seen it, but I think "Requiem For A Dream" by Hubert Selby Jr was a pretty faithful adaptation from book to film. Of course, they cut some stuff out, but it was a very complete film and because of it, I never touched any drug (besides alcohol) in my entire life, lol.

A book and movie that I love both versions of is The Princess Bride.

A couple of great adaptation from book to movie that I've seen was Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice which was from the first book in her series called The Vampite Chronicles and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien.

You can unlock a door with a bobby pin but you probably need a tensioner as well. Also I love Cathy Bates, she's a great person to boot.

I read Jaws before I watched the movie and have to say the movie did it justice. Same with Cujo, I had the first edition of that book but was lost during a move.

You might want to read One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. It is written as a narrative from the character of the Chief. The movie is from the viewers point of view. Both are excellent. I would love to see your reaction!

OMG Feel so old. Read my brother's copy of Misery in 1988 when I was 15. Saw it my movie theater (i worked at) in 1990. over and over and over! hehe this is probably the best King adaptation; considering how long his books are, compared to a 2 hour movie. The Shining comes close; but I love Kathy Bates. I do with they would have added the scene with the electric meat knife...I expected it in a Director's Cut or something, but nope.

There's another Stephen king movie with Kathy Bates called Dolores. It's actually one of my favorite movies. Maybe it's not the best movie ever, which is of course Blade, but it's worth watching even if you're not going to react to it.
