So the north farm has traded off the John Deere D450 swather for yet another combine, so let's talk about why?

Still my favorite farm video on the tube. We have no crops in common, and when I farmed it was less than 1000 acres of corn, beans and winter wheat. Our operation was based mostly on repairing older equipment, but we would buy new when it seemed necessary so the discussion of new vs used was right on the money. Very entertaining and educational.

Great Video Mike, you explain it all so well. I totally get keeping a brand of equipment that is familiar. My unless is a Case guy for Combines, with the exception he does have 1 new Holland. He likes the New Holland, but always prefers to run a case, he has had so many, he just feels comfortable operating and maintaining them. He has demonstrated just about every brand, and after he gets back in his case he always says over the radio, OMG, I thought I'd never get back in here. So I get why you stick with Deers. Keep pumping out the videos, love them

40 ft in that north canola is asking for a lot out of that swather. We use a 35ft Macdon and can have issues in getting it through the hole. So what I do is set my GPS width to 30 ft. Wow big difference. It flows nice through the hole, nice smooth swath Less trouble picking it up. If it's not a over heavy crop I go back to 35 ft. Experiment.

It's really fun that you talk about the X vs S in regards to how many S combines the X is designed to "replace" and then tell the story of reality. I just finished my Agronomy Certificate at Olds College and we had a presentation by the local dealer that will remain unnamed out of courtesy. The guy doing the equipment presentation was bragging up that the new X9 1100 was built to replace 3 S Combines. Three of them! I thought that was a bit hard to believe, but in my neck of the woods (hill country) we don't get the huge equipment like you have, so I didn't really have the background to challenge that claim. I guess sales guys are sales guy, so take their claims and cut them in half...

Remember this about sales people. They tell you what you want to hear, not what you need to hear. For a X9 to preplace 3 S690 or 790's someone should ask the salesman to do some math. On the 780 i run iin good wheat i average about 17 acres a hour. So if we take 3 780's x 17 acres per hour, and that computes to 51 acres a hour. At 60 bushel per acre wheat, that computes to 3000 bushels per hour. Thats not happening .

Mike we have June 2014 s series and have the new style air scoop and def. Also on 2012,2013 and early 2014's the rear panel is different, late 2014 and up the slow moving sign is not in the middle anymore, the rear brake/tailights stick out more and point down and the top of the panel has a different shaped slope, and there is a sensor below muffler and muffler is higher, only crazy people notice these things.

The scenario explaining the swather SITTING most of the year is what people don't understand. A lot of farmers have a problem with how much those expensive combines sit, they don't cover the ground of FHF, most farmers harvest under a months timeframe, and you still gotta have a combine to pick up the windrow

It would be nice if the bulk of your land was north. It seems the weather patterns for your south land is not great. And that’s just how it is for areas. They just don’t get much rain. You can tell this by the kind of soil the north land has. It’s more of black dirt then the lighter soil which needs more rain

Wow, super interesting hearing your business philosophy from my perspective as a NZ dairy farmer. Yep, all that big stuff l buy 2nd hand. It all depreciates turns into rust! Land is still there in 100 yrs time and appreciates in value. Way better investment. I think of the total dollars invested in machinery to run my farm. Some jobs are better done by a contractor, l don't wear out my tractor, or need extra equipment , or pay for fuel, or insurance, or need to store it, and l get my time to do other things. Only so many hours in a lifetime, so spend them wisely. People like us who try things out and experiment are called "early adopters", fun way to live.

Good quality used is often times better than buying the latest and newest. Good used is proven working and everything that had a production error or was missed in assembly has broken and been gone through. Believe it or not BMWs engineers went through scrapyards buying up old V10s that had been heat cycled and the material has settled to build their F1 and DTM engines on the old blocks. 🤷‍♂

Mike. I live and farm in South Australia, the driest state of the driest continent on earth. We don't run Deere because it is too dry to seed in November/ December down here. We have run every colour but New Holland Combines gives us lowest loss in all crop conditions and surprisingly, Gleaner is a close second. Not willing to learn something new and sticking to the "tried and true" is a terrible business case ....
