This van came to us with a noise that almost led to a part-out. Craig has experience rebuilding engines so he showed me a few things. We didn't rebuild this engine but we did repair it successfully and saved the van, learning along the way.

Did you have to take the engine out and how many hours did it take to do the job?

Oh yes, engine out and disassembled pretty far. I'll guess 40 hours including remove and reinstall the engine. It was done an hour here and an hour there as the Florida sun has prevented us from staying outside more than an hour at a time.

I have a slight knocking sound. Is that idle only. I feel like I can still hear that in your engine even after this repair. Is that normal for these motors

That is a hard question. From stories I've read and heard, most folks pay upwards of $10,000 for engine replacement. My neighbor and I fixed this with new rings, used piston and a day of honing a cylinder. Unfortunately the "oil back flow preventer" seems to stick closed or some other reason oil occasionally doesn't pump to/from the filter.
