i would be so sad if Sam left the show, he's probably my main reason for watching. Hearing about cool old arcade stuff, his collection, and his knowledge of game facts/history. Plus his jokes and personality make the show for me.

Everyone forgets that the first Titanfall was only available for PC and Xbox One. I think that is a big reason why the franchise isn't as big as it could. For PS4 players, only Titanfall 2 was available, so many didn't want to try it as they didn't play the first one

"games are really bad at telling stories" might me the strangest statement i've heard on a games podcast.

I always thought of metroidvanias as having rpg mechanics like experience points, equipment, loot etc. If it didn't have those mechanics it would be a metroid style game

Castlevania 2 would have been the first MetroidVania-style Castlevania game, not Symphony of the Night. And I believe that came out only about two years after the first Metroid.

I think Sam says it in a blunt and generic way in which there are holes in his argument, but to kind of expand on his statement, most stories aren't done well, they're mostly done to set the premise of a story or and use to break up the gameplay. When you take the majority of games, their stories aren't good. And if you were to take a game with a decent story and analyze it, you would most likely say that the story would be better told without the gameplay sections and would be done better with a television or movie type people in control of cinematography and actors in able to perform the scenes better. Though I do think the one aspect that games have is that the power of being in control does create a more emotional experience in spite of bad story telling. A story that's fairly generic like Detroit Become Human is emotionally moving because you're in control of the character, though if it were just a movie, show, or short film you wouldn't be engaged. However, I don't think this necessarily means that most games have done a good job at telling stories or are a superior means of storytelling because you can feel more emotionally engaged. So I think the overall statement comes with an asterisk, that games have the ability to make you more emotionally invested in the character, but the median overall isn't necessarily a good platform for storytelling currently. The one argument that Sam makes is that the good stories in games would be better told in a median like television or movies, and I think this is kinda true for a lot of games in which they excel at cinematic cutscenes. I think Naughty Dog especially is good at in-game dialogue that builds character relations while you're gaming, though this kinda dialogue is still applicable to movies and shows, actors could be saying these lines during action scenes and create a similar effect. The one thing that I think is extremely unique is when something that games offer that movies and shows can't quite replicate, which is when the emotions you experience during the gameplay mirror the emotions you experience during the story segments of the game. I think this is the unique aspect that Celeste shows, because the frustration you experience is similar to emotions of the character, and the general experience of the game mirrors her journey. I think this experience is so unique and special, and most games can't create that connection between the two aspects, the feelings while you experience the gameplay and emotions and motives of the character. There are other aspects that games offer like the amount of time you spend with the character, the attachment that happens while you play in that world and become attached to it, though I feel like that's more about creating more content over substance in most cases.

Two things alot of you guys seem to undervalue: -Outside of NA, the biggest game in the world is PUBG mobile, not Fortnite. -Most of the Battlefield crowd doesn't play other competitive shooters, there's still a lot of love for WW settings.

I disagree that video games do not create great narrative vehicles. Even if there are sections where you the player are killing enemies in between quiet story moments you are still engaged and those action moments act as a bridge between those more overt narrative moments.

I'm with sam 100% there are only so few games that have stories i care about. There generic and Gameplay is King. I didn't like the new GOW as much as 1 2 and 3 cause it was toned down and focused on a serious narrative.

My two buddies was taking turns on apex last night. So i decided why not try for my first time. I choose my boi chappie and had a good squad. Won my first match on my first time playing. My friends was like bruh how the hell. I was steady sniping out the whole time. Was playing on ps4 btw. Plays so good and im ready for many more wins to come. But i need my TF3!!

Man, I love this show. Great group! Though I miss Justin, this was a great group. And Sam, stop listening to the nay-saying KZfaq comments. Just ignore them and be yourself. Great take on how Apex was released. People on the Internet mostly suck (Spider-Man water haters, I'm looking RIGHT at you), so why put your game through that? Let your players be the "testers" as the developers constantly tweak from behind the scenes. Nintendo's Splatoon is a great example of how this can be done right (certainly not the only example out there, of course). Fascinating commentary about all those shooters, and I don't even love Fortnite. Personally, I almost couldn't care less about stories in games. There are maybe a dozen games where I've actually cared about the story, and even then, I never put those stories above the gameplay. I agree with Sam. Stories mostly suck in games. It's just not a good medium to tell great stories the way TV shows or movie trilogies can. There's so much downtime between the action and the story beats, and having so many paths to take makes telling one, coherent story difficult. I also rarely can beat a huge, story-driven game in just a few sittings, and after a while, I don't remember all the details of what's going on. I prefer storytelling like in Super Metroid where it's all subtext/environmentally driven; a game like that lets the the player learn what's happening on his own. I personally think that the "Vania" aspect of that genre includes RPG/statistical elements, as well as items that aren't always the same or found in the same places, nor are the items or weapons nearly as pertinent to further the exploration of the world. Keep up the great work!

I find it interesting that the two members of the panel who are basically dude bro gamers and don't play games for story, and the games they tend to play generally have no story, have the strongest criticisms and opinions about story in games. "It's ironic don't you think?"

It's pointless to ask Sam about storytelling in games when all he plays are Nintendo games.

Can you guys really not see the difference between paying full price for a game and the paying even more for loot boxes and playing a free game with lootboxes? I guess when you make so much and have free access to every game you ever wanted your incapable of factoring price into a game. Either way I dont support any game with pay to win mechanics because a bunch of rich pricks get it and drop countless dollars to be better than me. I'll save what money I have to spend on games for a game that charges me once and gives me complete acess.

I don't enjoy the EGM segments. It's nice occasionally, but every month's a bit much.

I wonder if we placed a bunny like a baby bunny maybe 4-6 months old in-front of the IGN staff and see if they'd call it ugly and critique the shit out of it for not being a pit bull.
