Should you get your APOE4 gene status tested? Do you already know if you have the APOE4 gene but don't know what to do about it? In this video Dr. Nina will help explain more about the role of APOE4 in the body and what you need to know if you have the gene.

Thank you soo much for this video. I have the APEO4 gene from both parents. While I have done a lot of reading on the subject, this video is articulated in a comprehensive fashion ... easy to understand. Again...Thank you

This is a very helpful video. My mom just died of Alzheimer’s and I have already had open heart surgery at age 55. My cholesterol levels were off the charts before my heart attacks (2020 when most of the medical community was shut down) My cardiologist now has had me on an injectable for the last 2 years which concerns me in case I have the APOE4 gene(s). I just contacted my doctor to try getting tested. ❤

Dr. Nina, I am an E4/E4 carrier, and have been doing some research on the subject for some months. Many sources I come across mention limiting/cutting out alcohol. I wasn't a heavy drinker to begin with, but have limited my intake to 2 drinks per week, occasionally up to 4 drinks total a week but spread over two days a week if there is something going on. I don't drink to get drunk, but I just enjoy the taste and it's always been this way for me. I found it interesting you didn't mention alcohol and wondered your thoughts on alcohol intake when it comes to considering dietary restrictions with APOE4?

I’ve come across the same information. I’ve cut alcohol completely as I don’t need it. It would be interesting to see what Dr Nina has to say

Not only did I get to watch my parents decline and die, I inherited APO4 from them both. Everything else is developing as you said, high cholesterol, ridiculously high triglicerides, prediabetic, so I try to be productive and enjoy each day while I still can, even though I soon won't remember it.

Is there a reason keto and high fat diets come with a caution for apo e4 carriers? I was hypoglycaemic and early experiencing cognitive issues at 40. I’m diagnosed adhd but it significantly worsened with age. All has improved for me substantially with keto. Thank you.

Your information about ketogenic diet and ApoE4 is contrary to the recommendations by Dr. Dale Bredesen. He recommends mild ketosis (70% of calories from fat) with high vegetable intake (70% of food by volume). If you were to update this video, would you update that information or do you still have a different opinion?

Dr. Nina, thank you so much for this valuable information. I've been grasping for info about ApoE4 and what I can do to mitigate the health concerns. The DHA supplementation suggestion starting at 9:34 in this video is interesting. I'm not "early in life" exactly (I'm 55) but I'm wondering if I should still take DHA; research seems to point to 2g/day as a decent target. Right after that, however, you mention that we should avoid foods high in PUFAs which confuses me a little bit. DHA is a PUFA I believe, so I'm conflicted about whether or not to take it, as well as foods like Salmon/Mackerel, Walnuts etc. In my other research I find multiple sources that say to greatly reduce Saturated fats to 7% of dietary calories or fewer. Are you saying we should do the same or for these PUFAs? Thank you!

FYI, there is research out there suggesting that APOE4 carriers do not metabolize marine-based Omega-3 fatty acids in the brain like non-carriers do, and that they actually need to eat fatty fish instead of taking supplements. I still take Omega-3 supplements for heart health, but try to consume fatty fish directly at least 3 times per week (mostly canned sardines from Costco).

Thank you for the info. You mentioned the importance of avoiding PUFAs, which are in nuts, vegetable oils and fatty fish. Does that mean to eliminate foods such as walnuts, mackerel and Flax?

Hi Sabrine. Glad you enjoyed the video and great question! With PUFA's it seems to really be about ratio to omega 3's and overall quantity. Some healthy PUFAs exist (walnut, flax etc) as you mention and eating them is still recommended however high quantities of these foods can lead to increased inflammation over time, this is especially true if omega-3 intake is low. Hope that helps!

@@memorymedicine4641 thank you for helping me understand that! I do consume lots of healthy nuts and fatty fish, but I am also a very avid omega 3 user. I've been on the supplement for years now, and notice a different in memory and mood right away if I skip them. Thanks for your clarification again.

I made genetic test 2 years ago. It was just for fun as it was as part package where I also found info about my ancestors... When I got results that I have apoe4/4 it scared me. My great grandmother had alzheimer and as young girl I use to stay with her at home if my aunt needed to go somewhere for couple hours. Now I decided it is better to face this so I am trying to find more information. I am 36 and I already found I need to completely change all my lifestyle. Is here someone who spoke with their doctor about this? I don't know if I should do it or just change my eating habits...

Hi Lenka. Thanks for the note. I think it is very brave and wise of you to look into the changes now. There is so much evidence that even apoe4/4 carriers can prevent this disease with the right early interventions. I run a preventative program specifically for this situation and more info can be found here: memorymedicine.ca/. I would also be happy to just have a one hour video consult with you any time if you are looking for more of an overview. My booking website is here: elevatedhealthcare.ca/.
