Aramoana 1962

Build in Scotland by Denney and Brothers Ltd, Aramoana was the first roll-on roll-off ferry operating on the Cook Strait of New Zealand. She was capable of carrying 80 motor vehicles, 40 motor vehicles and and up to 20 rail wagons. The first commercial sailing was on 13th August, 1962, and she was withdrawn from service after the introduction of Arahura in 1983.

I worked in this ship as Electrician during 88 to 91 when it was named NAJD 2 and running between Port Blair and Chennai, Vizag and Kolkotta. Very fond memories....

victor lincoln did you take aramoana to deliver it to its new owner in 1984? My husband did he was chief electrician.

Was a Stewart on this Ship back in 1966,we would work 4 weeks on,with 1 week off,Great job in those days,

As a child I sailed several times on a '`Sister ship'' by Dennys of Dumbarton...the Falaise ferry between England and France...that ship could roll...A tragic Sister was 'Princess Victoria'' involved in a dreadful disaster twixt Eire and Scotland. The open car deck 'guillotine'' doors were stoved in..dreadful tragedy. Poor Souls.

The Aramoana helped rescue quite a few people when the Wahine wrecked at Wellington in 1968. Just a few years later when Union suspended their service to Lyttelton, the Aramoana had to be rebuilt to accommodate the increased surge in traffic

I remember that refit, outdoor areas enclosed and turned into side lounges similar to Aratika to increase passenger accomodation to 800. I always believed she was refitted solely to get a few more years of revenue earning service out of her while "Ara Five" was in the initial design phase, seeing as Aratika had been converted to carry 800 passengers the year before (1976).

I remember seeing the ship arrive from its delivery voyage. Hell, it doesn't seem that long ago. In our office, we nicknamed it the "Harry Moaner". Had some great trips on it, though!

I did a return day trip from Welly to Picton on TEV Aramoana/ZMRD in 1964.

Diesel-electric vessel. Four electric motors geared to twin screws driven by six 16-cylinder English Electric 16CSVM diesels.......Marine versions of the 16CSVT engines found in BR Class 40 and 50 locomotives.

fantastic details. I am planning to build a model of Aramoana for my model railway in 1/120th scale and it was great to see the Picton linkspan,etc. I grew up in Marlborough
