I predict that in the coming years, Ardisia will be making a comeback in the houseplant market. I find them to be very non-complaining, easy-to-grow plants for the indoors. Some Ardisia leaves are unremarkable-and actually-my first Ardisia I got as a unnamed trade in one of my first Plant Swaps, and it took a year to figure out what it was. When it flowered, I totally got what it was. Anyway, there are plenty of Ardisia with great leaves. I'll be highlighting several throughout "365 Days of Plants", but in the meantime, this one kicks it off as #197.
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Years ago florist used to sell this with a good crop of showy red berries , as a fall - Christmas seasonal gift plant. It was one of the first houseplants I owned. They sometimes send up shoots with leaves only on the top , like yours did. The part of such a stem without leaves is where the flower sprays and latter berries grow, which is nice because that way the berries can hang separate from the bushy foliage.

I have an Ardisia humilis and in the growing season it grew very quickly and was extremely easy to maintain. I’ve only had it for about 9 months now and have yet to see any berries but I’m looking forward to that day! Definitely recommend this plant.

I found mine in a super small pot at Walmart for 3$ and I never knew what it was it grew so well and never had problems with it. I love her so much because she kept me company in the worst job ever. Now it is super luscious and grows a lot 🥺 found out her species only a week ago 🥰

On the comeback houseplant bit, it's a bit rough in some parts of the US because this plant is considered invasive and in many regions outright banned. I have been fortunate enough to gain an ardisia as a baby and had it for about 5 years now. I have only been able to do so as I have kept it potted and lived in regions where it is not banned. It is an absolute gem of a plant! Pretty, delicately colored flowers bloom with long deep green leaves! It's a beauty to behold for sure!

Another one of those charming invasive plants that found their way into our hearts & homes! Successful culture for me is practically identical to schefflera arboricola with the only difference being a 4-4-3 organic fertilizer during the growing season.

Oh wow, another plant to add to my wish list, I think I saw one of these at Lowe's and thought it was super cool but didn't get it because I wasn't sure what it was, now I'm kicking myself because I didn't. Thanks again Summer, see you again tomorrow.

I have Ardisia Humilis and LOVE it. And they are good growers and split very easily. I bought one and have created three.

Hello, iam growing ardisia humalis. I bought it at home depot 2yrs ago in a 4in pot. He has always done well. Leaves will droop when soil is really dry, water, and it bounces right back. Just uppoted today from its original 4in pot.

I have ardisia elliptica and love it for it's citrus tree like leaves but is not fussy (like indoor citrus!). A cafe nearby has one about 2.5' tall that is multi branched and looks so beautiful. I'm hoping with pinching I can get mine to branch. The leaves are lovely and healthy looking--why I like it so much plus easy care :) I'd like the one with berries as well......

I grow mine in almost direct light. Grow lights. So it is bright but not as natural. There is one East window in the growing room. But there is also 1000s of watts of leds in there. And she is maybe 4 feet from a 1000 watt. I get flowers and berries start. But then I get lazy on care. Lol! She has grown a few feet in the last year or two. And I didn’t have any flowers until around a foot or so of growth started. It’s not the most impressive plant. But it is definitely a great and tough plant!

Ardisia crenata was popular in the late Victorian period to the Mid-20th Century. It went out of style like Aspidistra, -simply a matter of taste. I haven't had one recently but theyare hardy to around 28 degrees F. As they mature and grow to flowering size they will have gaps like yours is doing now. Then from the upper clump of foliage flowers will appear in spring on stems that will eventually form clusters of red berries that last fora year or more. This plant with large clusters of berries topped by clusters of glossy foliage over bare stems is very unique, since the overall effect is very showy and distinct.The lowest foliage will eventually fall off and the plant becomes woody and vertical.It can easily be propagated by planting mature berries. It is a wonderful, forgotten plant.

I have an Ardisia humilis. The leaves are more elongated than the one your crenata, and when they are new they have a reddish blush to them. It's quite lovely. I have mine directly in my SW window and it seems really happy there. I rescued it from a failed multi-plant planter earlier in the year, it had two leaves left on it. Now it has about a dozen leaves and it's going strong. I'm happy that you profiled it, I think it's a very underrated plant :)

I got mine last June and it was quite small. It sits next to my big east window. It is quite tall now but a bit more lanky than bushy though. It has a little baby that's growing really fast right next to it too.

I have a question, why do some of the leaves have rounded tips and others more pointy?
@Eternal_11_Sasha
@Eternal_11_Sasha 3 жыл бұрын
Some of the leaves are a smidge wider than others but for my plant, all the leaves are pointed similarly even from beginning stages of formation.

Hi Summer! I know you grow your plants inside your house but I would really love if you can add comments about howing outside. I know, there are lots of different kinds of «outsides»... In my case, I have a balcony with sun all day until 4, lots of wind... but it is divided in 3: a part closed like a greenhouse, a part open with a roof and the 3rd, completely open. I have hard times growing many of my plants, so I keep moving them until I discover where they look better. So, if you can, it will help. Thank you!

I received this plant at Christmas this year. It was added in with other Christmas plants. This is the only survivor. There are berries of some kind starting to bloom. Can this plant go outside year round?

I have shoebutton Ardisia's (Ardisia Elliptica) and came across this video because the oldest one (maybe 9yrs old now) is very unhappy after being repotted. I also have to warn people that my plant is considered very invasive and should only be grown indoors lol. Apparently, dropping a seed on the ground outside is enough to allow it to take over entire ecosystems. Up until this point both have been completely trouble free. I am afraid the oldest one might die, it's leaves keep curling and drying up, the smaller ones at the base of the plant turned yellow and eventually died off. After stressing it out troubleshooting it and replanting it multiples times (problems with soil distributors), I really can't figure out how to get it back to the state it was in before I repotted it.

I received one in a basket of flowers about a year ago. I repotted all the plants in the basket. This plant is about an inch tall and an inch wide. It has not really grown at all. I have it close to a south west window and fertilize ever 2 weeks. Any suggestions?

I have one! I don't think it is a Crenata as the leaves are not shiny like yours. It was called a Showbutton Ardisia and it has very delicate, pink flowers. I bought it at Home Depot (!) and it was labelled completely wrong. I had to search and search to find out what it was. It is one of my favorites now.
