-Very good to see you together I was already following John Hammond on Twitter and I really liked his content ... !!! -Let's take my opinion on what you discussed from my point of view based on the path I'm following: -I have a history of working in a military Data Center here in Brazil in a control tower, and after 3 years out of a heavy corporate environment, I went to help with the family business and now I went back to studying hard to be certified and updated. -And I started with the network certifications that for me were the basics, I did CCNA or JNCIA, and I wanted to continue in data center and network automation, but many companies and people I know came and told me that with the military base I had, I had to follow in Cyber Security. -I had a precept with Cyber people, because the vision I had was the guy from Mr. Robot, you know the stereotype, but then I started meeting professionals like John and Neal and I started to see different and I realized that a lot of what I did in the data center was the basis of Blue Team, so I accepted that it is a very interesting path and changed to go to that area. -Despite I made networks (CCNA), now I will do systems administration (Linux Foundation Admin) and Azure (Which is where this AD Windows and Power Shell) so yes I will do my first security certification even though it will be the eJPT (I liked the theoretical basis that they offer in the test content) and then with a lot of study in parallel and then do a Defense certification that possibly will be the CND, because I also didn't see any option for example from the staff do Kali specifies for Blue Teams and lastly the OSCP after many CTFs, precisely because it is a practical hands-on test. -Outside CND and CompTIA Security + what other Blue Teams certifications are there that you can recommend, those of LPIC security and the Linux Foundation…? -For me, CTFs are playful laboratories. -In the course of Professor David himself, there is a Chapter in the preparatory for CCNA that the professor makes a playful laboratory with a story, this was the most fun to do, see I see CTF like this: A laboratory using resources from a game (playful ) to hold the person’s attention, I’m old and I see the course and the exercises as a game and that focuses on it, but young people are sometimes more disperse and these playful resources help to focus and achieve results, nodes of networks already we use labs on everything (Paket Tracer, GNS3) the CTFs are the same for Pentest folks it’s just as much fun as possible. -After eJPT I will use many CTFs as laboratories and it is very good for the professional to train. -Thanks to teachers David and John… !!!

I've always been pretty bad at exams but good at all the forms of programming I've tried. Been super discouraging in UNiversity when I crush the assignments but the weighted exams bring down my marks. I love the fact that this is an industry I can do more of what I'm good at, the practical CTFs, and have it take noticed of on a CV rather than if I got a first or second in my final or honours year.

100% agree with John's assessment of CTF. New cybersecurity student here. I've found that CTF helps you think outside of the box. Sure, some are very basic, but others require much thought about leveraging your skills to overcome a challenge that may not give you much to go on. I highly recommend the National Cyber League competition if you are a student. They give you a score report at the end that shows you your strengths and weaknesses, and for the latter, you can use this information to fill the gaps. Additionally, they have a pro-version (~ USD 150 a year and a free t-shirt) that stays open in a gym capacity, so you can keep grinding at it. All the resources that John gave are great! I would definitely recommend PicoCTF and THM if you are starting your journey. Also, definitely check out John's channel, as his walkthroughs are an amazing training tool. I hope John considers starting his own CTF or at least a training program for those who want to develop a methodology like he uses to solve tough challenges. Thank you, David, for having John as a guest.
