Happy Father’s Day man so happy to say that I’ve watched your kids grow since you started. And before people start going into your comments about you saving your lead shot. IT IS NOT FOR WATERFOWL. Happy Fathers Day Bobby - 57 years old here, have been waterfowl hunting (east coast) since I was six. Spot on with everything you said! My first gun was a Sears and Roebuck single shot 20 with a fixed full, you had to make that shot count. Have been through many guns. Currently shooting a Beretta a400 Xtreme plus. For waterfowl it depends on my situation, with ponds and woodlines I stick with factory, usually modified patterns the best. Doves #7 with Modified, Big open water I use the Kicks High Flyer - Full #2. For deer I use Kicks Buckkicker Full 00 Buck and for Turkey I use Jebs Head Hunter - Winchester Long Beard #6. Good video.

Some of the best patterns have come out of my factory Beretta optima in the A400, first new gun I've bought for birds after retiring U.S. Army. Before that used factory and Carlsons for an old Beretta 303. You couldn't be more right about practice and confidence in your equipment! thanks for sharing bobby!

Thanks for this run down. Very interesting. I’m switched to a .685 this past year using BB for geese and 2s for ducks. What you said about larger shot not holding a pattern as well in the tighter chokes makes perfect sense. If I can find it, I think I will try 2s or 3s for geese and 4s for ducks this year. Great video! First time commenting!!

To Learn to shoot a shotgun, especially with current ammo prices. Take some lessons. To learn to hit targets and to learn lead Shot Skeet. Reason the field layout and targets are fixed. What I learned, is that you don't aim like a rifle shot as the target is moving. Find a shell and choke combination and try to stick to it. By shell I mean Mfg, Shoot Size and loading. Also have instructor do a gun fit and help you learn to mount the gun. Skeet gives consistent target presentation. Five Stand gives more target presentations along with shooting angles. i think tight chokes when distance is involved. spend and take some lessons

I run #2 steel for everything in my go to Mossberg 535 with a factory full and Rossi single shot 20ga. The only exception is for pigeon and dove using 7½ in the Mossberg with the same choke and an Iver Johnson bolt 20ga, and then for varmint I use bb lead for 12ga using a Mossberg factory extra full and 20ga is either #2 lead if I can find it or #4 buck with the old Iver Johnson and it's fixed full choke. That's just my experience on what works and how to keep it simple since I use mostly airguns and rifles and know them very well.

Hi Bobby. Thanks for another great video. I saw that you failed to mention 2 things that I thought you may want to look into further. Your “Full” Carlson Cremator is .700, like you said but with the Mobil choke system, it’s an Improved Modified. The Kicks HF full has the same constriction as a true Modified choke as well so they are not technically “Full” chokes based on constriction. 2. I agree with you on smaller steel patterning tighter than larger steel. I have shot hundreds and hundreds of patterns and I’ve come to the conclusion that if you shoot 50yards or less, you don’t need tighter than a true modified. I shoot a Cremator MR which is a Light Modified constriction out to 50 yards with the very best success. Steel bigger than #2 steel actually pattern less evenly with anything tighter than modified in my experience. I shoot 3” 3s for ducks and 3” 1 shot for geese at 4500ft, but I don’t shoot past 50 yards EVER. Keep up the good work!

Yooo Happy Father’s Day Bobby! Harper and Boddie couldn’t ask for a better Daddio. What a great Fowl Friday topic to get everyone thinking about September through February. As far as chokes go I hope that people know what you mean by full choke. Most full chokes that come stock with your shotgun are made for lead only. Thank you for explaining to check on each one. Most shotguns come with a improved cylinder (which I like for small upland birds and skeet/clays), modified (steel shot for waterfowl or tighter for upland birds like pheasant and even skeet) and full (I only use it for turkey 🦃 loads) that are flush with the barrel. I agree with you on people who are starting out should become intimately familiar with their weapon before adding more money into it. Also about Number 2 shot is the most versatile shot out there especially for large ducks 🦆 and geese. The two chokes I use are the stock modified which is best for shorter range decoying ducks 🦆 and the Pattern Master Black Goose Long Range for pass over shots. Question for you Bobby; “Do you do a lot of summer E - Scouting on say On X or BaseMap? Whether public land with water or fields or finding farms with similar features so you can ask for permission to hunt or get a lease? A few tips on that would be really helpful for everyone and a good Fowl Friday topic for the off-season.

I use the stock Carlson replacement full or I.C. for everything. #2's for most of the duck & goose season. Might use BB in late season, which patterns good in my Benelli. Each shotgun should be pair with the shell & choke it'll shoot best. Some guns love cheap super X like my buddies Beretta. My Benelli doesn't like superX but loves Federal Speed Shock. I hadn't bought a shotgun with a screw in choke till just last year. I had a fixed choke 20 gauge before that. Haven't been hunting long. So I'm still working on clays and adjusting to the stock chokes for now. The carlson's chokes though would likely at some point be my upgrade. Especially for the prices. Hopefully though this year I'll do more bird hunting pigeon, dove and crow perhaps.

Utah's boys all run Carlson's full or pattern master goose . The goose hunt is rough out here... sky blasters train em well. I like pattern master just because it strips the cup and lightens the shot string effect. If we're on the water not in blinds I run #5 everywhere else is #2.

I think Bobby when you’re going out hunting in the upcoming season. If you’re able to take a few shotguns and shoot each one testing from pump to semi auto with the choke you prefer to show it’s all about practice and change up chokes showing others that you don’t just have to shoot full chokes right off the bat. Happy Fathers Day as well brother from Ventura, Ca.

I have personally shot most choke tubes out of my own pocket. Like you suggested to learn to shoot your gun hot! Like you said about steel shot was great. I have moved onto tss shot. I am now reloading myself. Now I have the privilege to learn about Comp n Choke. Their customer service is outstanding. The reason I am saying this is that you can call them and they ask what gun are you shouting first. Second they ask what yardage you are seeking and what game you are after. Three they will ask what type of shot you are using. They will suggest what choke they recommend for your fear.I personally run several upon what yardage I am hunting over decoys for waterfowling.

pretty much on par with Bobby...I like the Kicks high flyers, use my full choke for 2,3 and 4, and put my modified on sometimes, but always for BB steel shot...I would add, it may be worth spending more on top shotgun ammo for the newer shooter, and using a wider choke like a modified. Your aim might not be top notch to start with so use that extra energy from some hevi shot or hevi hammer type ammo with some tungsten or heavier alloy to help put down the ducks with less shot on target.

Just picked up a new gun near end of last season, shot a LR patternmaster that came with the gun (bought second hand) for a majority of the remained of season as I was hunting on the shores of Lake Ontario, no boat, big water, lot of just pass shooting. I role with Pattern master with 3 or 2 shot 2 ³/⁴ shells nothing over 1450 1500 for ducks and the same choke triple Bs 2 ³/⁴ nothing over 1450 for honkers reason being i find it kinda like taking a hand full of rocks and throwing vs lobbing, witch will have a tighter pattern, lobbing witch brings me to the point, hotter the shells more likely to blow your pattern apart thats why i dont shoot anything over 1500 or a 3 ¹/² inch shells because i can get the same thing but better out of a 2 ³/⁴, always good to see fred keep the videos coming and happy fathers day

I agree with your perspective Bobby. I’ve bought plenty of aftermarket chokes and I really don’t see much of a difference between those and the ones that came with my gun. Personally I enjoy shooting an improved/modified with #4 shot at ducks. I’ll bump up to BB’s if I’m going on a straight goose shoot. I like to work my ducks close and #2 with a full won’t leave much meat left. And it keeps my pattern too tight for my personal comfort

Factory mod & IC in the 20 gauge (double barrel Charles Daly, “wife’s gun”) & a code black duck in the ol stoeger 3500. That choke doesn’t leave except when getting new grease or the yearly rabbit hunt. #4s for all ducks, 2s for geese.

Since the pattern masters are not a constricting choke when u up the shot size it patterns just as good a smaller shot size cause it doesnt restrice it down.

Curious on your thoughts on Müller chokes. Surviving duck season did some extensive testing, found they were more consistent by far.

If anybody shoots invector-plus guns that use them tubes, I highly recommend to use a wicked wing choke in long range or mid range i love it when they first came out I bought one and it's awesome it's only made for duck hunting and steel shot only. Can't shoot anything bigger then 2 shot in it also.

I got the Winchester sx2 and a carlson cremator. First 12 gauge I have owned. I went skeet shooting and hit 49 of 52 targets. Not too bad, I don't think there is anything wrong with learning on an extra full choke if that is what you want to hunt with. Ill probably take it out before I go squirrel hunting again though lmao 🤣
