I'm a filipina born in America and came out here to South Korea to teach English for a year. In my experience, she's so correct. I got really disrespected and discriminated for what I looked like (Asian but not korean).. but they failed to see that I am American at heart and mind, and well-educated, regardless of my skin color..I got treated so terribly and was paid the lowest compared to the other foreign teachers.. i was even turned down a teaching job for being "Asian" like ok, seriously?? 😔 it was a nightmare.

I used to watch kdramas and think how beautiful life is..every dialogue and words of cuteness and every poetic lyrics of kpop .... changes after researching the reality of it....i feel disgust in my stomach after seeing any kdrama knowing it's not how they are and spends tons of money reshaping their facial features....i don't wanna hate them but i can't able to like them either...at first i thought it's just few of them but as i deep down to people's reactions most of them are like that...they don't know how to react infront of different race people... it's not their fault entirely cuz i feel they didn't used to see very often foreigners in korea... The natives were sitting besides him leaves and sits away from him...that looked really worse situation ngl.

As a mix of Korean and Indian who is currently living in Korea, I have gotten stares because of my brown skin and someone told me at the grocery store “are you sure you can afford all of this?” I told them yes but I still was looked down. There are racist people all over the world and we can’t do anything about it.

Thailand to send soldiers to help Korea fight in the war. There have been Thai soldiers who died helping countries they thought were friendly. And this is what we get RACISM.

As a Filipino American I have received so much racism from South Koreans here in the US (born here) just because of my skin color. However what I noticed here at least in Los Angeles is that it might stem from insecurity. They seem to copy every other restaurant that becomes successful that is NOT Korean. Eggslut (founded by a filam) and potato corner (from PH) are two popular food joints that have Korean knock offs here in the US. They also tend to open sushi restaurants and taco eateries which I find laughable as the menu is clearly not what you would find in the authentic versions. Sushi with all these sauces doused on it with spicy mayo? Yeah not authentic. For them to be racist to other people and pretty much copy and paste ideas from them and making profit is ludicrous. I do my best to not support any Korean businesses here due to their discrimination and copycat marketing.

I’m Southeast Asian and have been around a lot of Koreans in the states, and what she say is in fact pretty spot on.

In Korea war, Thailand is the first country sent help by sending almost 40,000 tons of rice. At that time South Korea was very poor and hungry but we never insulted Korea people untill today. Nowadays as a Thai people we are delighted that you have progressed to a world class level.

I remember the time I was in a voice call on Discord. The moment I told them I'm from the Philippines, they barely talk to me since. Everytime I send something about the Philippines (it was a cultural/language server), the Europeans will reach but not the Koreans. It was an indication that most of them aren't really interested to the Philippines. Well I won't force it but they're really cold to me lolz. However, there was one Korean who joined and happened to live in the Philippines for 5 years. Dunno their conversation but since then, they now ask questions about the Philippines. What a change XD.

Earlier today, I came across a thread in South Korean soc media saying that a new kpop group wouldn't be successful because it has a lot of Southeast Asians members. The fact that it has so many likes and almost all Korean comments agrees with the poster proves that what this woman is saying is true.

The biggest difference is that racism in Asia is very subtle and VERY backhanded. Like talking behind your back. Racism in America is violent, leads to death in many cases. Jail sentences, etc. Americans are just violent in general compared to east Asians.

She held back telling you the full extent of racism in S.Korea. I travelled a lot there around 2007 to 2009. I had made many good Korean friends in college and wanted to see them. I was very interested in Korean culture, history, and language, however visiting S.Korea quickly changed that. Following Thumper's moms advice, I have nothing good to say, so will stop myself right here. But they basically look down on most of the world and openly show racism like its normal and acceptable. But what really annoys me is S.Koreans love to travel and expect the world to be warm and welcoming hosts to them, however they are terrible hosts to visiting foreigners.

My family business took the VIP customers to South Korea trip in the 2000s and we are from Thailand. We had one tour guide accompanying us from Thailand and another one local guide from South Korea. The local one looked down on us so much and was hardly civil so the whole tour collectively decided to give the total bonus to the Thai guide instead of splitting it half-half between the two guides as originally planned. Never seen someone regretted their behavior so badly as soon as she found out (we gave the bonus to the Thai guide on the bus a day before we left and her eyes lit up when she saw the thick envelope). On the last day she tried to act nice so hard in the hopes of getting some, but too little too late. If you look down on the SE Asians from poor country then our money is too good for you. 😂

I am 56 years old from Thailand and remember the days when South Korea was poorer than Thailand and came to my country in those days South Korea was struggling to survive and we never insulted them by racism at all. But one thing she didnt mention is that the discrimation is subtle, it is not aggressive or open, you feel it but you dont really think that it worths rebeling against. They are pretty good at hiding it.

Whether we like it or not, she is speaking facts! This happens EVERYWHERE no matter where you're from!! Even within the same country, people of the cities will discriminate and look down upon those who come from different regions, such as the mountainous and rural areas (who are considered to be underprivileged and less fortunate). Unfortunately, this happens in the USA and everywhere, too, I'm sure! They just dont talk about it as openly as the Asians or poorer countries do. The Asians don't fight about it and don't put stuff like this in writing to "protect" or guard ourselves from these discriminations because we can't control what other people think of us. Therefore, we just live and let live. It's more peaceful that way (as long as they're not trying to harm us, just because). But then again, how would we know that? They don't go around announcing it.
