Hi! I'm Shaniya but I use the moniker Shanspeare on KZfaq. I'm 24, use they/them pronouns, and love all things pop culture! My channel has a lot going on: think Shakespeare meets Baz Luhrmann meets insufferable jester in a relevant but silly costume. I have a bachelor's in English Professional Writing (and basically Literary Analysis--long story) which aids me in the creation of my content. Above all, I wish to emphasize teachability and critical engagement through a fun lens.

As someone who was raised by two rock fans and have been on a path to become punk since 12 yo i was shocked to find out that people in 2023 are still screaming "satanism" at horror-themed music videos. Punks, emos and satanists are the nicest and safest people I've ever met as a queer person. Since childhood I've felt calm and safe when i saw colored hair and spikes on people around me. Why do people think that love for dark themes and horror are a sign of mental health problems? It's a way to celebrate instead of being scared, turning horrifying into beautiful.

satanic panic truly is a first world problem, as a resident of a so called developing country i am much more concerned about the child mothers and the women who are killed just for being women in disgusting, alarmingly increasing numbers. what is happening with DC is simply an artist not liking her previous albums and now she wants a new aesthetic and maybe a new sound.
@synesthesia.aesthetic

@glenn_desert_witch
@glenn_desert_witch 9 ай бұрын
You are right -- I think the scapegoating in developing countries is often easier, because oppressed groups have yet to have grabbed more power. So, it's enough to be a woman that upsets someone to get shunned or killed. The mechanism is largely the same, though: create an in-group and an out-group and vilify that out-group to the point that they get shunned and eventually killed. We can look at history in the imperial core, where we had witch burnings, clearly aimed at women, and various waves of repression of women that led to less spectacular, but very real deaths. Even in something as simple as the Comstock era in the States (mirrored in different ways across the world, and I am sure still going on in many places in the imperial periphery), where simply denying the distribution of any kind of contraception, or information on the subject was labeled as pornography and thus prohibited. It led to countless deaths of women dying not only in childbirth, but from various complications from having children, and having too many of them, along with not knowing how their bodies worked (uterine prolapse, fissures leading to infection, ovarian torsion, etc etc etc). As Shanspeare mentions, we also have seen similar patterns arise to try to destroy Jewish people, black people, etc. Who is the victim doesn't really matter for this strategy to work. Whether you call it Satanism or Witchcraft or Immorality, Christianity, or even Socialism and ANTIFA, the important part is that the powerful need to have a scapegoat, and convince people to go after these supposedly evil people so they don't have to, or so they can implement draconian measures to suppress them. And regardless of who we are and where we are, it is our job to resist othering and dehumanizing, mass slaughters and incarcerations. We need to make sure we keep our eye on what's important, or enemy is not among us -- our enemy are the richest and most powerful people in the world. And we need to protect those who are marginalized, for whatever reason, even when we don't like that marginalized group. Fight the powerful, protect the victims, always.
@LunaSotomonte
@LunaSotomonte 9 ай бұрын
I agree with you to some extent. While there are far more important issues around the world, I think it's worth discussing bc at least in México satanic panic (alongside colonialism ofc) has gone far enough to cause harm in indigenous communities, and even to animals that happen to live close by.
@FaiaHalo
@FaiaHalo 9 ай бұрын
As someone from the global South and an overexploited country, I disagree. If you mean the way *Christians* think this is an issue, then I agree. But if you mean in the way this non-issue is used to persecute native populations (like the earlier comment mentioned), queer people, atheists, leftists and yeah, all that DOES include women, then I disagree.
@bouncingbuttons7441
@bouncingbuttons7441 9 ай бұрын
i understand respectfully how this issue may have no relevance to residents of countries in the global south, however as someone from the united states who was raised in evangelical christianity, this is an important issue for us in a nation where fascism is on the rise. if the people in my country let instances of satanic panic go unchecked, it will lead to people being hurt in the way you describe above, not just women, but many other marginalized groups. i understand that the issue of global imperialism is a truly complicated one, but that being said, there are marginalized groups in the united states who either do not have the privilege of full citizenship or whose rights to full citizenship are being taken away if people look to oppress them. anyone from trans people to jewish people to indigenous people to non-citizen residents of the united states are at risk of this moralizing thinking, as it's those people who will suffer the impacts of neo-conservativeism that comes with attitudes like the satanic panic.

its got a lot to do with the commodification and commercialization of alternative fashion. the general aesthetics of subcultures have been coopted by normies and elites (see egirls, "big tiddy goth gf" meme, fashion trends describing celebrities wearing black as "goth," the success of wednesday, and whatever tf doja cat is doing right now) while completely leaving out the politics. since these people are so visible, the same types of conservative folks brigading against punks and metalheads 30-40 years ago direct their immediate ire toward them for their aesthetics even if their ideologies are just as vapid and conformist as ever. meanwhile, actual alternative ppl wouldnt touch those celebrities with a 10 foot pole.

While by no means an explanation for everyone who falls for the Satanic Panic, many of them believe in things based on faith, not evidence. Actual evidence may tell them that there’s no proof X celebrity or minority group being heinous baby eaters, but their pastor tells them that there _is_ evidence, it’s just that the devil (and his POC/Jewish/queer/elite cronies) tricks everyone into thinking there is none, and why would the pastor lie to his congregation? “The devil’s greatest trick was convincing people he doesn’t exist” and all that. Also throwing in hints that not believing in a specific take will result in exclusion helps to keep people devoted to the narrative. Why risk shunning and hellfire when fitting in is easier? Faith is fine in moderation, like Shan said, religion can be tremendously helpful for some people, but when it’s used to propagate fear and distrust in the world and is used as a weapon against other people, that’s when it’s gone off the rails. Source: personal experience with fundamental Christian family as a queer agnostic.

You know what I mean. [Of course nothing wrong with atheists!])

I was a Goth kid in the 90's who also happened to be Pagan (something only my family and very close friends new until my 20's because of the way things were in the 90's). I listened to Marilyn Manson and I was very unapologetic....in my shitty small Ohio town, no less, where there are churches (mostly Baptist) on just about every corner and the church held such power that we were not even allowed to have Halloween parties in school because the churches said so. And it wasn't fun, to put it mildly. lol The good news is since the 90's, the Church in general has lost a lot of people. I know the majority of people in America still call themselves Christian but when you break that number down, most of those people are not "practicing Christians" who go to church regularly or who really care about it. I feel like we are in a much better place to push back against this new wave of the Satanic Panic than we were in the 90's. More people are openly non-conforming in one way or another today. Maybe I am just an optimist but do feel like the majority of people forty and younger think this is nonsense. I hope..... This video was brilliant as always.

I agree with you, as a fellow goth kid from the nineties, that we are in a better place to resist. It no longer takes moving to the big city to find our community, to band together and organize. And most of my friends my age and younger (surely a self-selecting group, however) have become *more* radical with age, and are really engaging in the politics and not just the aesthetics of resistance. Something to be mindful of: we are seeing a lot of what leftists call "recuperation": this is a commodification of the resistance (not limited just to subcultures) and a resale of it to us. So we see things like major brands and big box stores now carry goth clothing, and we see a lot less DIY clothing than we saw in the nineties (which was already less so here than in Europe, where I grew up, where you had almost no stores that carried goth stuff, so you had to DIY). This incorporates more and more of our aesthetic and consumption into the mainstream, defusing the most radical elements, and lulling us into a false sense of safety. So while I believe it is appropriate to be hopeful, this doesn't mean that we can just stop the fight, cause we ain't close to winning yet. Another thing to think about that is related to the above is that individual consumption and conversion to ideas, or even participating in spirituality and feeling better about ourselves is NOT activism, and does not in and of itself produce change. Wearing a Che Guevara tee doesn't make you a leftist, you have to actually work to make changes, like participating in solidarity efforts, mutual aid, local politics, etc...

@@glenn_desert_witch I've been going to protests since the Bush presidency (my first was a Soldiers Against the War protest where there were maybe at most 20 people, mostly Vietnam vets, because none of the papers in Central Ohio, including the Columbus Dispatch, would allow the people organizing it to advertise it) and we were all called "traitors" and told that we were unAmerican because, as I am sure you remember, speaking out against Bush and the war was treated by a huge portion of our society as an act against America (because they made up the rule that "you can't speak out against the president during the war" which was, of course, thrown out the window when Obama took office) and I have been physically threatened by self-described "patriots" for wearing a John Lennon tee shirt with the "offensive" saying 'Give Peace a Chance' printed across it. As soon as 9/11 happened, the town that hated me all of my life for not conforming anything about myself to what they deemed appropriate had a much bigger reason to hate me because I saw the war as bullshit, started for the express purpose of making the rich richer, just like Vietnam, and I had zero patience for Anti-Muslim attitudes either. That put a target on my back very quickly....Gee, I am happy that I had the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan so wrong....lol I do fear that we are headed back in that direction with the Trump cult but the good news is, the people like that are now a minority (about 20 to 30 percent of the country). I have always been very politically far left and I have stayed aware and active. From marriage equality to getting Plan B on store shelves to a decades long fight for reproductive rights to attempting to stand up against racist pigs who get away with killing in cold blood, I studied the biographies and listened to the interviews of activists from my grandparents generation on back and I always tried to see where they went wrong and what they got right. Back in the day I found my fellow millennials to be frustrating as hell because they seemed convinced abortion rights, alongside human rights in general, could never be taken from us so to see that so many have finally opened their eyes since Donald Trump became president makes me happy.... although I wish it wouldn't have taken that since there was plenty of evidence to say that everything going on right now, Trump as president or someone like him as president included, was coming since Reagan's presidency. But it fills me with hope to see how committed Gen Z is to turning this shit show around. The first time I really felt like the left already has the future on lock down was when the Parkland kids staged their walk out and thousands participated even when the schools were threatening to expell them if they walked out. The speeches from the kids at Parkland that day brought me to tears, not only because of how dark the present is but also because it felt for a moment like a progressive future was inevitable. Gen Z has all of the political awareness that my generation did not have at their age and many of them are taking to the streets or the statehouses, they are voting in large numbers, they are calling senators and representatives to tell them just how they feel about the fuckery. I love to see it. If both generations came together, I do believe we could affect change.... before Trump or the many people now in our government who are just like him, actually succeeds in creating a fascist dictatorship which this current Supreme Court would probably be cool with, and the corporate Dems would do what they always do....sit back, allow it to happen, and use it to get more donations. As far as the Goth aesthetic being easily accessible, it is what it is. I am personally a thrift store Trad Goth myself and I have been since the 90's because I was poor and fat so Hot Topic was of no use to me. Lmao The fight over differentiating between those who just like the look and the actual real Goths has been going on since the 90's. And yet there are still people my age who have called themselves Goth for decades who do not know that Goth is a subculture built around Goth music. So I feel the same way I felt back then. There are far bigger things to focus on. Just as there were people who dressed like Punks and called themselves punk who didn't care about the music, so it is with Goth, and that certainly won't be changing now that the look is easier to achieve than ever before. The only time I have an issue is when it's a prep who bullied kids for being Goth one year and popped up dressed like a Goth Lite or a Diet Goth the next (*cough* The very first Emo kids.....). Aside from that, I feel like it just is what it is. I hope you have a good rest of your weekend. 😁

This brings back memories of when my father’s aunt destroyed one of my favorite pieces of art that he made while he was in prison because “his life has gone off track “ after he painted that… in her defense it was a painting of several hooded figures carrying torches while entering a cave that looked like a monster’s mouth and she was a old paranoid lady(legit crazy) but it still upsets me because it was beautiful and she just entered his house when he was not there and took it…

Indeed! Interesting take. in regard to the demand for art to be take its most digestible, palatable, banal, sanitized, most focus-tested form, I’ve seen this occurring in the nerd-o-sphere with the rise of fascistic influence in some of my favorite media. “Keep politics out of (blank)” has become a rallying cry in gaming, television, movies, comics, even music despite these things always having been political. People don’t want to be challenged anymore. They don’t want to think. They don’t want art. They want to be entertained and numbed, or they want hegemonic values reinforced. They want a commodity.

I have my limits, of course, but while, for instance, calm music sometimes helps, I tend to need something angry or something that sounds like it understands. I wonder how things might cool down as people get used to Satanic aesthetics.... Will it be explained away? ...I don't know how I'd feel about that.

18:09 It has everything to do with religion. Not just any religion, Christianity, has been historically liked to power, to monarchs, to the capitalists, to fascists. Most millionares of the world are Christians. My very own country was not only colonized and its native population (which I'm a descendant of) was nearly wiped off, but was also robbed and exploited by Christians monarchs, priests and colonizers. Then, when the dictatorships of the XX century happened, they were supported and spread culturally and massively by Christians and the Catholic Church. I can keep going. But this immesurable damage has everything to do with it. And we'll NEVER have reparations for them because they ironically keep washing their hands off guilt by claiming religion was just "used," with evidence literally showing the contrary. PS: this is not on Shanespeare who did an awesome job with their video. Much love from Latin America. And sorry for any grammatical mistakes.

you made a really important point. artists are tired of struggling to stay in the boundaries of traditional digestable art for people who dont want to be challanged. one apparent example is youtube and its safety guidelines which will get literally anyone who isnt playing right into their hands demonitized. we have to change our way of consuming art and respect it for what it is and not expect it for what we want to see in an exhibition. art is not created for exhibitional values.
