I recently pirchased the Arendal 1723 THX Monitors (the larger ones). They have totally exceeded my expectation in my 2.1 channel setup. This is a brand that should be on a short list when looking for new speakers.

Your review helped me realize the surrounds you are using essentially match the monitors and are much better suited for hanging on a wall. I think it is genius how you managed to utilize your subs as a speaker stand which arrange the right/left exactly the same height as your center. Bravo on your efforts.

What a great video. I watched after you mentioned you were getting a new setup in your response to me on the Basx A3 video. I didn’t have any familiarity with Arendal outside of the brands name. But I may very well put those sides on my list upgrades if I ever have the ability to score them. My system would be quite the Frankensteins Monster if I added them now. I have an Emotiva C2+ center as well as their B1+ as surrounds A1 front heights. I have SVS Prime satellites that need to be installed for rear heights. I just got a pair of Wharfedale Evo 4.2’s that replaced the B1’s as LR. I absolutely love these speakers. They aren’t perfect, of course, but music is a real treat to listen to on them and HT is fantastic. All powered by Marantz 6014, Basx A3 and Basx A500. This all took me many many years to save for and I couldn’t be happier. Except now the Arendels are on my radar. I really enjoy your presentation and approach to these videos. Keep up the great work

@@cableguydan I too came from a B&W set up. Had the 686-S2 for right and left fronts, HTM-62-S2 center, 2 M1 for back surrounds and a PV1D sub. I just sold my B&W set up(hard to part with 😢) for just around the same price I got them for. I’m soooo happy with the 1723s(monitors) theater set up and PB 3000 and SB3000. I had a trial period going on with the SVS ultra tower package and the Arendals blew them out of the water for almost the same price. I decided to keep the Arendals. Thanks Raymond. I’m really pleased that you are also happy with the Arendals. The BasX A3 is worth its money, in my opinion. When I first installed it and tested it with my B&Ws, it certainly brought an improvement with it. Although I’ve not done an A/B comparison using the A3 and the Arendals, it is doing a great job of powering the 1723 Monitor S at 4ohms. I’m still pleased with it, allowing my Marantz to work a little less when powering the additional surround speakers. :-)

Congrats on the new upgrade. It's a shame that many neglect the importance of the center channel. It seems to be an afterthought on most product lines, as the focus are on the front speakers. I'm glad you're reaping the benefits. I do hope that Arendal releases a true 3 way center speaker in the future. I would love to get a set of the bookshelves in, just so I can admire the build quality.

Their center channel beats the SVS Ultra 3 way center. I was trying it out before my Arendals arrived and it’s a night and day difference. Don’t get me wrong, the SVS put out super sound… but the arendals were immaculate. They’re all matched up and having 3 matching monitors create that cinematic experience where the dialog just comes from the screen on a clear and concise manner

3 way sacrifices timbre. you are too focussed on the center channel and not the entire system. what is the point having wide horizontal dispersion with no match for timbre when the person who is outside of the 20degree audio dispersion is so off-set that the sound is fucked either way as they will be closing to the surround and left/right speake ?

Congrats on a great choice😊 I think Arendal is one of the best value for money out there at the moment. There are not many in this pricerange that use HDF (which I suspect has a lot to do with the dynamics, full body etc that you speak of). A great cabinet makes it easier to exploit everything from the other components without distortion. You are absolutly right about the importance of the center channel (I have a matching tower fliped upside down behind my screen to get perfect timer with left and right🙊). The timbermatching of all speakers, are also often underrated, it IS important 🤪. Ps: you are the expert on your room, and what sounds great there. (I also use "you and your friend as a testsong. Lots if Dire Straights in general, Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, and a lot of other kinds of music). 😊

Hi Andre, Great to get your feedback and to hear that you have similar views. Before purchasing the Arendals, I was monitoring EBay to try and pick up another 684 tower speaker to replace my centre channel. I’m confident that this would have improved my front soundstage, however, the Arendals have gone above and beyond in that regard. And, great choices in music, there. We have very similar tastes. 🤩 Thanks for watching the video. Much appreciated. :-)

I find that most people say "the centre channel is the most important speaker in their system" then they go-ahead and make it the smallest speaker in their front soundstage, often flanked by towers. Then then say "the rears are the least important speaker in a system" so they make them the weakest link in the chain ... Truth is the centre channel is the most used speaker in a system and the rears are the least used and remember the whole reason we are all here is because of those little rears, they are home cinema personified, home cinema Defined... :) speakers must be identical and fed by identical monoblocks to maintain tonal balance and soundstage, if you run a pink noise through different speakers you will notice a Clear tonal difference between speaker types, even if they have the same drivers in them, this cannot be avoided at any cost...if I were giving advice to someone I would say pick a full range 3 way CLR speaker which will give you the flexibility needed for installation and with at least 8" bass drivers for that very important and often overlooked 3rd octave, then finally and carefully match your CLR to a monoblock amplifier... You could start with 1 and have one of the finest soundbars, then simply repeat the steps as and when funds/time permits, so it can be modular too... I think that in a 2.1 system nobody would use a centre and a bipole or a tower and a ceiling speaker for left and right duties so not sure about how Atmos music will sound against a linear system in this regard...
@andreemilsen369
@andreemilsen369 2 жыл бұрын
@@Echo-jg8is I agree 😊 Which is exactly why I have a tower as center😊 In my ideal system, all floorspeakers would be towers with matching power...or...like the 1723 monitors with a sub for each speaker🙊 Atmos is a bit hard to make a floorstander, but if buildt into a frame, a monitor would be possible (not sure it would be necesary, the bass can simply be directed to the nearest sub and floor level monitor😊

Nice video and nice small home cinema dude. Arendal speakers and subs are getting very good reviews from the likes of Audioholics etc. Seem to be quite neutral with natural voices. Have you thought of in the future adding mineral/rock wool acoustic absorption panels. I see a few small foam tiles on the sides and ceiling. but with lots of speakers in a very small room bouncing sound around good acoustic room treatment is a must. Some good quality mineral wool acoustic absorption panels 100mm depth thickness on the side walls, back wall, ceiling. Will improve the speaker reflections much better than the current foam tiles. Ps. congrats on getting featured on Build Montage KZfaq channel 👌

Hey, thank you for this review. Very informative. Question, I’m building a home theater and I’m torn between buying 3 of the 1723s monitors for my LCR or buying 2 1723s towers and the 1723s center. Do you think the towers would make my center channel feel weak in comparison? Which of the 2 combinations would you recommend and why?
@cableguydan
@cableguydan Жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, Many thanks. Really pleased you enjoyed the video. For me, the dream has always been 3x identical speakers for LCR behind an acoustically transparent screen. Whilst I don't have the screen yet, the 3x identical speakers for LCR are living up to my expectations. For me, this reduces the chances of any differences between the LCR speakers, especially important for effects panning. (Check the Arendal Facebook group as I know some there have the Towers and matching Centre and are also happy with their setups). As my priority is movies (probably around 80/20%), matching LCR is my preference. If I wanted to prioritise music with no subs, the towers might be a good option. But, for me, the 1723 Monitor S paired with well calibrated subs are superb. Hope that helps a little. :-)

Hi Steve, Thanks for the lovely comment. Honestly, I wouldn’t like to say if these would be better than your Paradigm Reference speakers as I’ve not heard them myself. My only honest comparison was against my B&Ws. It might be worth you considering utilising Arendal’s 60 days buy and try and run them against your existing speakers. I’d hope that you’d be impressed. Something I am confident in is that if you move to all Arendal speakers throughout your system, you should get a much more immersive surround bubble. As I mentioned in the video (far too many times lol), the weight and dynamics carried from speaker to speaker has impressed me. I hope you get to try the Arendals. Although I’ve not tried a comparison with the new speakers, I would assume that the BasX is still an improvement compared with the Marantz. Is there a big difference between bookshelf vs surround speaker? I want to know the 1723 surround.
@cableguydan

Hi Joy, Sorry for the slow reply. To be honest, I’ve not directly compared them. As the 1961 are in surround back position, I’m not sure if they generally receive as much information as the surrounds (1723 Surround S). The 1961 are certainly doing a good job back there, but hard to compare as they are. (Sorry, that’s not very helpful).

Hi Roof Pizza, Given how much of a positive improvement the 1723 Surround S have made to the sound, they were 100% worth the upgrade. As I discuss in the video, effects now pan seamlessly around the room with excellent weight to them. ☺️👍🏻

I find this video a bit weird as I to have a BW speaker setup and maybe I would see an improvement with the Arendal speakers, but I don't have the issues that he seems to describe. I can''t be sure, but I did a listening test before buying my speakers and learned one important clue and that greatly affected the end sound. Simply put the BW speakers need the right amp to power them and they are power hungry too, oh, they play fine with less, but to really get them to show what they can do, you need a powerful amp. I have a solution that gives me 140 Watts pr channel, for the surround speakers, but I run the mains on a 200 watt block to really give them enough power to show what they are good for. And by doing that, most of the issues he describes vanishes. Sure the Arendal speakers might be the next step up, I wouldn't know, I just don't have the same issue with my BW speakers after getting them enough power. Oh, and one there thing that I learned during my BW speaker shopping even before buying my speakers, an marantz amp isn't a good match with BW speakers at all. The speakers will work just fine, but the sound will be strongly affected. It shouldn't, i know that, but it does. I know this thanks to a speaker listening test that a hifi shop arranged where they allowed you to match up different speakers with different amps. It was really weird hearing a sound different between something like a nad and yamaha and an marantz amp, using the same speakers, but it was clearly there. And one other thing that they showed me was that speakers might actually need a lot more power than you think to fully work. the floor BW speakers and larger likes more than 150 W pr channel. they work fine with less, but it affect the sound. There's also the fact that Marantz amps are good with music, but not the best amp for watching a movie, it's not bad, it's just better at music. And yes you need a good center speaker or the sound will be affected and the typical center speaker that BW wants you to use, with the typical range, isn't a good match at all. you need a bigger center speaker that uses the same elements as your mains just to get a good sound in the first place. Talk to your local seller of BW speaker and ask about a listening test where you can tray a bigger center speaker and a more better matched amp and I think you might just change your ideas about it all. Yet, I will admit that Arendal speakers might actually be very good, even better than I think.

Hiya. The Surrounds have the flexibility of Triaxial or direct firing. For a slim room like mine, that’s a good thing to experiment with. Also, they have a slimmer profile that most bookshelves, so lend themselves perfectly to surround duty, rather than rear/surround back channels. Looking on the Arendal FB group and community forum, the Surrounds seem very popular for the surround/side duties. :-) Hope that helps a little. They really are fantastic speakers. 👍🏻

The center channel is the MOST important speaker actually. I'm just impressed that you placed the Center speaker vertically like the LR speakers which is the ideal setup. Normally the center speaker is placed horizontally. Did you try to put it horizontally and if so how did it sound? Why'd you get the monitors and not the towers? I'm currently using the Dali Oberon 7 which I got just December of last year. I'm eyeing the Arendals but having second thoughts coz my Dali's are less than a year old.
@cableguydan
@cableguydan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Many thanks for your comments. Yes, absolutely agree regarding the centre channel, ideally flanked by identical L&R. I have had a horizontal centre speaker for years and have been dreaming of perfectly matched LCR for years, too. That’s why I went with 3x 1723 Monitor S rather than choosing the matching centre channel. Vertical is the way. ;-) Regarding the towers, my long term goal is to have an acoustically transparent screen with my LCR behind it. For this reason, I prefer the Monitor to the towers. Thanks again for watching and commenting. If you go the Arendal route, I’m pretty sure you won’t be disappointed. 👍🏻🤩

@@cableguydan The only thing holding me back from getting the Arendals is the duties & taxes I have to pay. In my country there's about a 30% tax on imported items. If I get the LCR monitor's that's about $3000. I'd have to pay about $900 in taxes alone!!! 😢
