YOU are a jewel! Had a handyman put a new garbage disposal in last year and he put everything back WITHOUT putting plumbers putty under the strainer. Oh brother! But now I can do it - won't my husband be proud (and a little impressed). Thanks for the LOGO tip. :)

Thanks Tim! Your video made re-seating my strainer a breeze. It is and old porcelain double basin kitchen sink. That sunken circle that accepts the strainer had become rusted, which bled up the sides of the strainer. So before doing your install step by step, I sanded that and gave it a good coat of Rustoleum White Gloss and let dry for 24 hours. Hopefully that will end the rust issue. Thanks again!

Thanks Tim, several viewings and reading the comments gave me insight why my strainer was leaking after two installing attempts. Needle nose pliers and an assistant to hold the strainer motionless was the final result. Also, If you can get away with it, go ahead and sneak one of the sofa pillows and use it to even out the difference in height at the under sink entrance. Makes it easy on the back to get up too!

You know how stuff snowballs? I'm installing a drawer dishwasher. Got the outlet installed, the cavity built to size, and when I went to change the shut off valve, I broke the solder on the copper pipe below it, and had to cut the pipe down and then add the shut off valve much lower. Then my water hookup thing was too short, and when I was changing that, I bashed my wrench on the wring holding the strainer in the sink and that broke (very old sink). I wanted to cry because I couldn't get the new one in without it leaking!! Till I saw your video. Thank you so much! It's only been a 3 day project so far, ha! Good thing I'm on vacation.

I just had a similar problem with an old sink I'm having refinished. With my Sawzall and a metal cutting blade, I made 3 cuts -- from the bottom -- as if I was cutting pie slices, not quite all the way thru so as not to damage the sink, then each section easily fell away as I bent them towards the center. Total time: about one minute.

The lower ring gets turned at least 3/4 turn past hand tight. You MUST make sure the strainer itself does not move as you tighten the lower nut. I think either your putty is bad or the putty is tearing if you're allowing the strainer to twist as you tighten the lower nut.

Awesome info! If I could add a couple of tips Always anti-seize the metal threads were the nut attaches. It will save you or someone else a lot of trouble in the future if it ever needs to be removed again Also. I always add some white dope to the rubber washer where it meets the bottom of the sink to ensure nothing can leak through after years of use. Just wipe it clean when you’re done. Prob over kill but I don’t like call backs !

We had sink leak and it was the strainer getting too old. I called several plumbers .The price was frightening. It'sabout $175-$265! After I found out your KZfaq and showed to my husband. He's up and said "I can do it" He spend around $15 for a new strainer, a box of putty and one new wrench. About half hour, the new strainer is in. Only question is how long should we wait to run the water. We should wait for the putty be completely dry, right? Anna Chou

Good video. But why did you not finish the job? Like making up the final connection to the p-trap? And cleaning up the putty on the top after tightening? Then run water to show that it does not leak. For the novice it would be nice to know if the plumber's putty needs to set up? Can you use the sink right away?

I did everything all shown 3-4 times, tightening a little bit from finger tight to ratchet tight and water comes between the rubber gasket and the bottom of the sink- I used plenty of putty on top. I've tried using different strainers as well. If anyone has a suggestion assuming all the steps were followed I would be very grateful!
@askthebuilder
@askthebuilder 10 жыл бұрын
Possible problems: Putty you used is not good. It needs to be very pliable. Knead it in your fingers and spread it into the ring as I show in the video. Press it down evenly on the sink ring hole. When tightening the nut under the bowl, you MUST MAKE SURE the strainer DOES NOT TURN. This tears the putty creating a leak. That's why you saw me have a needle-nose pliers to hold it in position. Get back with a full report.

I installed a new kitchen sink and basket drains and found that plumbers putty just doesn't work. I had to take the rubber gasket from the the bottom of the basket drain and put it under the basket and snug it up against the sink, then get under the sink and put some silicone sealant to seal any small space between the bottom of the sink and the basket. It's not the usual method, but I just could not get plumber's putty to work. I've had to work on this sink about 5 times to get it to stop leaking. One of the problems was that the horizontal pipe was too long and pushing the baskets out of place. I just trimmed the plastic pipe with a hacksaw, and that helped the pipe fit better but didn't resolve the situation, so my method of using silicone caulking will hopefully fix the problem. I'm sick of having to put dishpans under the sink to catch the leaks.
@askthebuilder
@askthebuilder 7 жыл бұрын
Kay, I'm a master plumber - been one for 35 years. My method in the video above WORKS and you'll have NO LEAKS. Be sure the putty you buy is fresh. It should be somewhat stiff in the tub, but when you knead it with warm hands it should get quite pliable. Remember, the strainer up top MUST NOT twist when you tighten the nut below. The twisting is what is causing the leak. Get back to me after you have it done right. I want to hear your success story!
@kaybrown5637
@kaybrown5637 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I did what worked for me. It probably isn't right, but it worked for me. The method I mentioned above of taking the rubber gasket from the bottom of the basket drain and putting it under the basket, then putting the baskets into the sink, screwing the baskets on, then applying silicone sealant seems to work so far. I'm not going to get back under the sink, cut the silicone sealant I just put on recently. I'm just not messing with it anymore. It's bad enough my elderly father was yelling at me for working on the sink yet again. I'm just going to leave it as it is. LOL

The rubber gasket should use at the strainer bottom instead of the putting. It is a big mistake to put the rubber gasket between the bottom of the sink and the metal cap 2:04/3:23. There is an opening at the bottom of the metal cap and the rubber gasket can't stop the leak from the top of the sink.
@askthebuilder
@askthebuilder 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to inform you that you have no clue what you're talking about. The method shown in the video is foolproof. You should pay very close attention to how the basket is molded and how the water travels through it into the tailpiece that connects to the threads on the bottom of the basket.

@@askthebuilder Sir, it does matter how long someone has been a so called plumber I myself have done many repairs on many things & have used many different products to do repairs & installs, just because there is a product called Oaty or any other brand plumbers putty does not make that a certified guaranteed product that will work for the job.. Any plumbers putty used doing sink strainers will dry out & begin to seperate crack in short time causing leaks, the plumbers putty is useless & waste of money its nothing short of a quick fix for strainers but again will leak in short time, I switched years ago to 100% GE clear silicone after each install I never had any leakage of water for years not a drop, when I used so called plumbers putty always leaked & to clearify this again plumbers putty will break down where Silicone will never that Sir is a fact so if someone would rather use so called plumbers putty then be prepaired to replace it again in a short time afterwards.

I'm only spending my time with you because you chose to TRASH a perfectly good product because you may have had a bad experience from it, or you REPAIRED someone else's mistake. It would serve you well to just comment that you've had a good experience with XXXX product instead of making a foolish claim as you did. That kind of behavior, unfortunately, is an indicator of the depth of your ignorance. I'm sorry to put it that way, but it's true.

We will be installing a new Garbage Disposal in a couple days, install instructions say IF you have a stainless steel sink (we do) do not use plumbers putty, use a rubber gasket they provide to go under the new sink flange, I am confused as my plumber has used plumbers putty under the sink flange on the other side of the sink when fixed last year. I don't want to get the whole install done and found I did the wrong thing which leads to leaks. Any insight to the install instructions from GE vs what I see plumbers do?

is the putty toxic after it it applied, and hot dish water is in the sink.

Linda, That's a GREAT question! The answer is no. Now, I'm sure there is someone with an extreme chemical sensitivity that could be affected. Realize that a very tiny amount of putty is exposed at the rim of the basket when it's tightened to the sink. You'll be fine. I just wouldn't eat the putty like one might munch on peanut M&Ms. :-) If you want MORE tips like this, you should sign up for my FREE AsktheBuilder newsletter. I've fixed my strainer about 2 times now but for some reason it keeps leaking what could I do about this problem?
@askthebuilder
@askthebuilder 9 жыл бұрын
Easy! Just watch this video a couple more times and do EXACTLY as I'm doing. Use new putty, and be SURE you don't twist the strainer as you tighten that nut under the sink!

@@askthebuilder no. The putty is an out dated and time consuming tool. I don't apply any putty. Metal to metal with a rubber washer underneath. Never had a leak in my life. The putty and poor application is usually the cause in these cases.

Trying to help my sister , I tried putting in a new sink drain/strainer . It didn't fit the sink. I put the original back in. Now there's a leak. Ugh. I'll try this.
