A review of a debate with a muslim apologist who is considerably more liberal and yet less capable of defending his positions.
With 3 tenets to defend, he failed to present a defense of any of them...telling me that he believes them because he doesn't believe they could possibly be untrue.

I think it's more complicated than that. It's denial. When people are so convinced of their religion, they just can't see an error even when it's in front of their noses. Admitting it should shatter their faith, and their mind are resisting too much to accept it. It's like watching a poor written movie. Normal people will find hole in the plots. Fanatics will always a crazy justification so things are still holding up in their mind.

Every obvoius error you point out, is morphed and interpreted with word-Kung Fu so long, until it‘s apparently explained away. Example: The earth clearly was not made in 6 days. Muslim: „Yeah but the word X can not only stand for ‚day‘ but for any time period, so it‘s not en error.“ Oookay, but then the phrase is empty of content. If anything can mean anything (as these apologies always work out) , then its an empty message.

@@brazenbull36 How recently would you consider recently? People have been debating Islam for well over a century ago. However, it wasn't very common as it mostly predated commercial flights, and so the world was a lot more segregated in terms of how far people would normally travel, and it was limited how far you could travel and still communicate with your family back home. In short: There simply weren't all that many Muslims in Europe and North America back then. But we did see figures such as Bertrand Russel make commentary on Islam.

@@brazenbull36 Criticism of Islam has been around since the emergence of Islam. As has criticism of Christianity been around since the emergence of Christianity. What you're saying simply isn't true. And whether or not it affects Muslims is irrelevant. Does this video affect Muslims? Probably not. I guarantee you that more than 99.999% of Muslims will never see this video or the debate, let alone your comments. Bertrand Russell was a much bigger deal, but the effect? Again, it is irrelevant. Bertrand Russell also wasn't some anonymous figure, far from it, he was known far and wide. He did not fear beheading. To say that there was no criticism of Islam before the internet because people feared beheading is nonsense.

Thanks, Matt. Something that amuses me is that, if we accept that the Koran is the final word of God, and that the Koran as a book is necessarily finite, then what it contains must be the most important, prioritized instructions for humanity, for all time... So why does the Koran contain instructions for dinner guests visiting Muhammed?

One of the biggest issues I see is that Muslims have only really debated against other believers or opposing sects meaning quite often they get away with their faith stuff which doesn't fly against the non religious, further and I may get called islamaphobic but I think many Muslim apologists also don't expect much pushback thinking their opponent will be afraid of death threats from radicals, it was only recently here in the UK a 14 year old got death threats because a Qur'an was accidently dropped and scuffed so sometimes I think the apologists don't expect serious pushback or questioning
@marcusreading3783

Islam is still very much in the mindset that it has absolute power, unlike Christianity that lost a lot of its power during the enlightenment era and thus, had to grow up. Its arguments are still shit of course, but it has to at least take into account getting pushback, while in Islams center of power, they can still chop off your head if you question the religion. It doesnt help that they somehow managed to convince everyone that anyone who questions their death cult is racist.

It’s not just that they think people in western countries will be afraid to debate them. It’s that in their own cultures, questioning the Quran is not tolerated. Christianity has been subject to logical critique for a good 300 years in the West, so Christians have had a lot of practice trying to come up with arguments to defend it. It still doesn’t work very well, but there has been a lot of effort put into it. In most of the Muslim world, it would be a very bad move to start openly saying the things Matt says in the video. Some places by law, other places just by the social consequences. But there are major barriers to critiquing Islamic belief in the Islamic world. So they don’t have practice defending a critique by logic.

@@willmosse3684 I don't think that the Duchess would agree with Machiavelli on much either, or at least I hope she wouldn't, although as it seems a lot of people still agree with many ancient philosophers whose arguments can easily be debunked by a modern 6 yo with a spare minute to think things through. But you're right, it's not exactly on topic. What is on topic is that some Jews in the same area wrote down some rules they adopted from (folklore from) earlier civilizations to achieve a utopia and that was thousands of years before Muhammed did. So we have written down records of people who Muhammed interacted with who had already done what Muhammed was supposedly unable to do and know. Granted, Muhammed was supposedly illiterate and there's a chance that all Jews born between 300 and 500 were all mute and born without muscles, so who knows, maybe all that knowledge was completely unavailable to Muhammed. I wasn't there to witness any of it.

@@NocturnaluxI can answer that (ex Muslim atheist here) and hell to the no. Every scholar I learned from accepted the hadiths from Bukhari. One of the first things I learned was that Muhammad split the moon. Hamza Yusuf, respected Muslim scholar, has admitted Muhammad married Aisha at 6 and consummated it at 9. He gives as defense that if we accept that Hadith why don’t we accept other hadiths in Bukhari where a tree the prophet leaned on moaned after he stopped leaning on it, during his sermons. Still gross, just because a man can perform miracles to an audience does not mean he can have sex with a 9 year old. Also we have no way of investigating this “miracle” of a tree wailing. I can assure you PD is out of his mind. There is a well known Hadith that says the prophet said “I have been sent with the Quran and it’s like (meaning the Hadith) so hang onto them with your molars”. Anyone who rejects Hadith like PD does is not even a Muslim, or at least that was what I was taught. I’m not surprised at all Daniel Haqiqatjou and Ali Dawah have blocked him on social media he is not even within the same block of the normative scholastic tradition of Islam.

The problem with the idea that "the Qu'ran is being misinterpreted" is that Mohammed told his followers they should read it and make their own mind up about its meanings. It was only later that the priesthood dictated an official interpretation of dogma. These two different mindsets can be observed to coincide with the 'Golden Age of Islam' when scholarship and learning flourished (and Europe languished in the Dark Ages), and the long centuries of stagnation which followed which only ended with the discovery of oil in the Middle-East

Islam Bingo Card: 1. There are "scientific miracles" in the Quran 2. How could anyone know this "fact" 1400 years ago 3. You haven't read the Quran (in Arabic) 4. You don't understand "true" islam 5. You are interpreting it wrong, my interpretation is much better 6. These (bad) people don't represent islam 7. Islam is the religion of peace 8. The media has an agenda to make islam look bad, the religion itself is actually perfect and peaceful 9. Most victims of islamic terroristm are muslims themselves, so terrorism is not islamic 10. Christianity is also violent 11. The extremists are just a tiny minority 12. Do you think all of this came from nothing 13. The Quran hasn't changed for 1400 years, this is why it's true 14. Islam will improve your life and happiness 15. Nothing is forced in islam (e.g. hijab), everything is voluntary

I have to wonder if Muslim Apologists are simply so unused to having their assertions challenged, that they haven't the experience - or even the capacity - to develop supportive arguments & (especially) evidence for them? Is there some custom or attitude within Islam (perhaps the most deliberately authoritarian religion ever devised) which prevents most individuals from challenging the statements of their authorities? (Apologists, Imams, Islamic Scholars - whatever.) Given that those authorities have historically (& currently, if Salman Rushdie's situation hasn't changed) had the power of life & death (or at least negative social consequences) over other Muslims, then this would both rapidly eliminate dissenters & deeply inculcate submission to authority in the survivors. The result is a group of people who are incapable of reasoning about their own religion. Even scholars like Perfect Dawah were raised & indoctrinated with this kind of thinking. So while they may grow to where they're able to disagree on written aspects of their religion (as well as the "interpretations" & beliefs of others), they will still base those disagreements, not on logical arguments, but on what their own internal beliefs/feeling say about what is/should be true. 'Cause hey, this kind of "argument" has always worked on other Muslims in the past...

All of the Abrahamic faiths are authoritarian and claim superiority over each other (and everybody else). Muslim apologists maybe the most naive but they are not the worst of the main 3 in my experience. This plays out geopolitically too... Islamic apologist special pleading is at an even higher level. Some of them seem high on Islam almost. Islam DOES do a better job of aggressively keeping people in line and keeping people in a religious fervour and excited about their beliefs It hasn't been diluted and secularised as much as Christianity yet but it is happening The way some Muslims and other fundies talk about their religious culture though reminds me of north Koreans and how excited and cultish they are about the Kim family. LOL! No they won't. Fallacies are and always will be accepted in debates. NoStampCollector did a great animation years ago about a debate where debunked fallacies weren't allowed and there simple wasn't a debate after all the rules were established. I think that's very realistic when it comes to debates, especially about theism. And despite that animation and decades of videos and books about why all the fallacies are unreliable as a justification to accept anything at all, instead of learning to be honest and sincere, people are still learning more effective ways to hide the fallacies and manipulate people, because it works. Most people aren't equipped to recognize fallacies and they don't care that people use them to excuse things either. People only object to conclusions they don't like and enable the rationalizations to get there because they use them too and don't want to be criticized on it. This also means that they don't have any arguments for why things should be different or why we should or shouldn't do something. You probably do it too. I mean, you didn't bother to explain why you would lose a debate when you say you don't think something is possible and there are a gazillion reasons to say that and be correct.

It seems like Muslim apologists are as far behind Christian apologists as Islam is behind Christianity, as though they are where their Christian counterparts were 600 years ago. It also seems that Christian apologetics has lost all of its steam, with WLC lowering the bar of evidence and all the younger apologists just rehashing old, worn out arguments. The defenders of the faiths are not getting anywhere, they can't come up with anything new. I wonder if that is because there really aren't any deities or anything else supernatural. Evidence of any gods is a lot like evidence of UFOs that in the age of high resolution smartphone cameras still can only manage grainy out of focus images. The Abrahamic God is a grainy out of focus image that has to be defined as opposed to described because you can't tell that it is a god by looking at it.
