@HomeInWildSpaces the best defense against man or beast is a firearm. If you love being in the outdoors exploring, fishing, hiking, or even hunting you need to be proficient in the use and maintenance of your firearms. Training with a firearm may cost you thousands of dollars but it could save your life against man or beast. You can choose to carry bear spray but I choose to carry a firearm.

@davesmith7432, I'm accustomed to these types of responses, but what is remarkable to me is how often they are unjustified. If you pay attention to photos I use to discuss the problem with political terrorists misusing bear spray, you will note that the photos demonstrate misuse by both the "right" and the "left". I appreciate your passion, but I think it's led you to a demonstrably false conclusion-as passions typically do. I'm simply raising awareness about misuse. I do not see that as political. Best wishes!

In the Infantry we have a concept called 'Defense In Depth' or a layered defense. The take away here is the same: Have multiple defensive points. When I am in Wyoming, I have Bear Spray as my preferred defense, (because I don't want to kill a bear unless it tries to kill me first,) my 10mm pistol as my second, and my Bowie knife as my third line of defense. That's just for hiking. If hunting one of us carries a rifle and the other carries a shotgun with slugs, in addition to spray, a pistol and a blade. That could all fail potentially, but it allows us to punch well above our weight in Griz Country.

I live this, always carry a pepper spray because you dont want to kill something or someone just because it presents a threat, if it presents a threat depending on the level maybe harassingly then deploy, if the first line of defense fails and threat increases to imminent bodily harm to death.....then i use my handgun, if second layer of defense fails because as you all know adrenaline is a hell of a thing and something or someone in it can keep going then my trusty boker knife or any high quality knife as a third is good. But yes this concept is good!

When my wife and I hiked through Yellowstone backcountry we had bear spray AND a gun. Interestingly enough even though we saw a grizzly on the trip off in the distance it was much less of a threat to us versus a giant herd of bison that almost surrounded us, as they wanted to graze the grass field we were in. We got the bear spray and gun ready as they drew closer but were able to slowly sneak out of a small gap in the herd. It was good to know we had layers of defense but even then things could have gone bad fast and probably not in our favor.

Of course firearms are “not allowed” in Yellowstone Park. Guess they are I stand corrected just not in government buildings. However, be prepared for a costly ordeal and maybe jail time if you shoot a grizzly in the park, they’ll try to bury you with a minimum $50,000.00 fine and jail.

It’s a matter of the law of large numbers, the speed and ubiquity of communications, and the old saying, “If it bleeds, it leads.” These are high impact, low frequency events. When they do happen, they get a lot of attention. They are sensational, often grizzly. There were 41,000 deaths by fatal car accidents in the US in 2023, but no one cares on a day to day basis to hear about them. Unless you live in a small town, you probably won’t even hear about one that happened nearby. Since 1784, there have only been 180 fatal bear attacks in all of North America. Of course, if you are number 181, it will be an extremely impactful event, but you are in much, much higher danger driving to work, swimming in your pool, or even owning a dog. It is the rarity and brutality of bear attacks that ensures you are more likely to hear about them.

In the 70’s there were a little over ~100 grizzlies in the Yellowstone area. Now they are pushing 1100. I just went hiking in the Tetons and didn’t see a single deer or elk, and there was a LOT of ungrazed forage all over. There are plenty of cases in which the hiker could not avoid finding himself near a mom/cub. When you do the math, there might be one bear per square mile. If you are doing a 10 mile hike…..

Great video! Now my two cents. I spent 7 years on two US Army tours in Alaska. On my first tour everyone was recommending the 44mag revolver as "Bear medicine!". I carried one for several months until a gentleman pointed out that a 30-30 has more stopping power then that 44mag. He had a lot more experience than I hunting dangerous game and what he said made sense. I got and started carrying an Itica 37 12ga police with extended magazine after that, loaded with slugs. The Eskimo scouts we worked with and lived basically among them said to put your hands up and back away quitly saying "I come in peace brother bear!", never wanted to try that technique out myself. Now remember in that time bear spray was not a thing, if it was I would for sure carry it with my 12ga. Now my personal up close encounter with a large bear was in the small town we lived in a fairly large brown bear wandered onto the highway leading out of Anchorage and was hit by no less than two cars and one pickup, demolishing all three. Serviving that he lay bleeding and still alive until a state trooper with cahunas the size of basketballs calmly walked up to him and placing his 357 revolver bihind the bears ear dispatched it, they are unbelievably strong. I personallgy clocked one doing 35kts through alders taller than a man like they were nothing. You can't outrun them. I remember a reporter interviewing a man who had been badly malled abd asking "You had a gun, why didn't you shot him?" Where apon the gentleman said " I tried to but he ate my gun!" Bottom line carry both spray and a gun capable of doing what needs to be done and practice with them till it becomes second nature. Be safe out there!...

You may not plan to enter bear territory but you never know when a bear might enter your territory. I live in the Piedmont area of NC and although bears are very rare in this part of the state they are not non existent. We are in their migration path and a couple of times a year they are seen in the area. And most people don't even realize it until they see one for themselves or on the local news. If you live in a major city you probably don't have to worry about it, but otherwise you should know that bears are present at least occasionally almost everywhere in North America.

Thanks Gatlinburg. And bear spray is faulty and what to do when the bear and wind are coming from same direction. Seen too many stories of sorry failure. A hand full of failures. I thought there were only a handful of bear attacks. You're being negligent. Bears are known to eat expended cans to get to left over spray and that they'll roll in spray areas. Hard to stop a bear coming at you 30mph. Sounds like an anti gun commercial.

By far the best treatment on this subject. I carry both, and with the same mindset as Smith. Spray first if possible. Hand carry spray when in thick country. In a chest rig when not. I keep the cannister rotated for instinctive and quick extraction. Be VERY well drilled with a gun. Practice instinctive shooting on advancing cable targets A friend to run the target is veryhelpful. Many ranges will allow you to do this as long as you demonstrate control of the weapon. Forget about plinking at a bear picture at 30 feet. You might not have time in the real world. If the bear is within 30-50 feet but not charging, you have time to get the spray ready. If it's that close and initiates a charge, then, by the time your'e ready, you''ll be either spraying or shooting at about 15-25 feet. Your results may vary....

What a refreshing and nuanced take. I’m a huge supporter of the 2A, but the lack of basic firearm safety out there is madenning. I always carry both bear spray and a pistol in the woods where I legally can. And the spray is usually my go to item. That’s the beauty of bear spray is that it’s legal everywhere and doesn’t freak folks out. You’ve encouraged me to practice more at the range. But I think you hit the nail on the head. A firearm requires a much higher degree of proficiency. I personally carry both but the bear spray is hands down the primary. I often carry bear spray in hand in areas of high undergrowth if I can’t avoid that area altogether. Situational awareness is above all the most important out of everything. I just saw a SBA video last night where a guy had a 10mm strapped to his chest and bear spray (it might be that same guy he said was attacked twice). He encountered a sow who initially ran with cubs and got them up a tree. She then turned her full attention & rage towards him. He used the spray and appears to have hit correctly, however, the sow charged through the cloud and mauled him pretty badly. The spray overcame the adrenaline & the bear retreated. It was only after a second attack he went for his 10mm only to find it wasn't there (bear ripped through straps holding the holster & gun). He lived but seemed near death from what the video suggested.

I served in the military, decades ago and back then was trained on pistols and submachine guns, but never for a situation in which being attacked by an angry bear. I'm sure the immediate release of a high dose of adrenalin when suddenly attacked by a bear of whatever species poses an enormeous obstacle to properly warding off the attack, even if there is still enough distance between you and the animal. To me, being someone with zero!! experience in bear country, the most valuable pieces of info from watching your videos - should the situation of meeting a bear in the wild ever occur - are: never walk alone into bear country, ill-prepared...meaning: forgetting or not being aware that one is moving in bear country, not carrying bear spray, not having it ready to use when needed and not having trained using it beforehand.

I think that's a valid point. "Why not just simplify?" The topic of safety in bear country is so polarizing and controversial to so many people that it takes time to sufficiently discuss the details and explain why every adult should carry and be proficient with bear spray and those who carry a gun should be sufficiently proficient and responsible in handling them. In truth I don't encourage people to carry a firearm. They are very effective tools in the right hands. I have recently come across 2 horror stories of a grizzly killing couples that used bear spray and had done everything else right; making noise not to startle, keeping food 15 feet off the ground, having the bear spray immediately accessible, etc. it was very discouraging to hear, and sounded like there is just no way to avoid getting attracted in bear country. i would like to hear your thoughts on those 2 situations, i think they were on the Final Affliction channel.

@HomeInWildSpaces 6 ай бұрын
I doubt you've met many bears at all, much less charging ones. Guns are a necessary tool at times. If you watched the full video, you would know this. It's not a matter of "best". Guns and bear spray are tools with their appropriate function. That's it. Both are highly effective in the right hands. Bear spray is far easier to master and deploy and is extremely effective. But a gun in the right hands is a very effective tool as well. People should simply be proficient with the tools they select, and there's no good reason to not carry bear spray. A brain shot is very difficult to pull off when a bear is charging you at 30+ miles per hour, even for highly proficient shooters. Chances are, you're not getting that brain shot. That doesn't mean the gun won't work, but it's best to have a healthy respect for these animals, and the limitations of one's abilities.

There’s certainly lots of dumb comments on this thread coming from people on the right politically. Not everything is a conspiracy. But coming from a right leaning position as as a hunter/outdoors enthusiast, here’s a few thoughts. No matter how we want to describe the outdoors, it’s the wild, unpredictable, and we are the weaker species out there. People will always want to explore nature and we have every right to. And no matter how sophisticated we become, we can never remove the fine line between civilization and the brutality of nature, despite how beautiful it is. On a basic level, someone who’s used firearms their whole life simply knows it works. Firepower is real, measurable, and the only guaranteed method to end an attacker like a bear. That can cause a false sense of security, non-proficient users, chance of missing, wrong caliber, etc. but knowing your life is potentially on the line as an angry bear charges, a firearm is much more inspiring than a can of spray. In my opinion. Particularly for those who’ve never deployed bear spray on a charging bear and seen it work. We’re going on 20 or so years of history, data, and culture vs hundreds of years of deeply engrained firearm usage. So for that person coming from that background, who sees National park services, wildlife conservation experts, etc fully recommend bear spray while simultaneously discouraging gun usage, it’s a bit off putting. Not to mention that firearm usage, even in self defense of a bear, is illegal in many parks like Yellowstone. And in places like Alaska, should you defend yourself from a bear with firearm, you not only will have to skin the bear and return its hide/skull, you’ll also be subject to the scrutiny of a detailed investigation from possibly biased individuals from those said agencies to prove whether you did so in self defense or not (all considering a bear population over 100,000 in Alaska). So the growing narrative from the “experts” on bear safety is guns are bad and bear spray is good, or at least bear spray is a far more effective tool. And some of those agencies (National parks for example) send the message that protecting bear populations is more important than both your 2nd ammendment rights, and maybe even your life. Because ultimately, if you’re limiting what individuals can use to protect themselves to bear spray, whether in a park boundary or not, you’re biasing a desire to protect bears at the expense of others’ rights, and possibly their lives. And let’s be honest. Department heads of the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, EPA, etc are more likely to be liberal than conservative. That’s just my opinion, but I’m sure I’m not the only one with that perspective. Many comments in this thread have been derogatory, poorly articulated, and labeling of people that don’t see it their way. That’s very unfortunate and annoying. I don’t defend that. But being anti-gun is more commonly associated with the left, and the agencies pushing bear spray seem to be doing a fabulous job at denigrating the use of firearms as an alternative option. And if you were to survey people who recreate in bear country that only bring bear spray, you’d probably find that the majority of them would lean left in their political worldview. Can two things be true at once and bear spray be more preferable across a wide range of bear encounters than firearms, AND those pushing its usage are more often liberal than conservative? Sure. For me personally, I’m going to bring both in grizzly country. Both are useful tools in different situations. But educating people about bear spray to use bear spray and follow all bear safety guidelines without the mention of firearms is a mistake and a purposeful one, in my opinion. You might see firearm education and usage for emergency responders, fish and game officers, etc. but you’ll rarely see that messaging to the general public. That says a lot to me.

If you walk up on or are walked up upon by a brown bear cub the mother isn't far behind and you will get your ass tore up. A brown bear (also known as "brown lightning" by experienced guides) can cover 50 yards in 2 seconds when pissed! Bears generally hide prey the have partially consumed in a spot and gaurd it. If you innocently happen upon such a spot you will find out how you taste seasoned with bear spray! Grizzly/Brown bears have zero respect for anything, even each other (there are numerous bear fight videos on YT demonstrating this. A bear that has had a bad experience with humans is way more likely to attack if it feels it or it's territory are threatened! Black bears are way more docile and generally will run if confronted in most situations, but not always! Do not put Grizzly/ Brown bears in the same category as Black bears. They are not comparable! If you know you will be in Grizzly/Brown bear territory carry a shotgun loaded with "bear rated" slugs (at a minimum) and know how to use it! When a Griz/Brown bear attacks (know the difference between a "bluff charge" and an actual charge) drop to your knee (if at all possible) and fire from kneeling position (most misses occur from shooting over a charging bear) as the projectile is in line with the bear and will deliver maximum damage. If you don't want to carry a firearm I suggest you avoid areas where Grizzlies/Brown bears live or take your can of bear spray and good luck. I recently watched a Brown bear that was shot at a distance of a quarter mile (3 hits, gun jammed). It ran (dripping blood) through deep snow at the hunters! The only thing that stopping it from killing the 2 hunters was 4 shots from a .454 Casull handgun at nearly point blank range! Those big bears will kill you if they want to. Period!

A silly remark, as spray diffuses with distance, meaning it forms a cloud. A bear's sense of smell is much more acute than a human's. Therefore, it's an effective deterrent. Are you saying that aiming a firearm to hit a moving target with precision is easier?! Great thoughts. I'd add that there's a huge amount of unreported cases where no injuries were made. I've had one or two of those myself. The last was where I used a handgun to deter a potential bear attack. Part of me wishes I had bear spray but the other is grateful that I had a handgun to create the noise that deterred the bear. I agree -- it is very nuanced & much more complicated. Adding to the troubles are NP rules (like Yosemite), where you cannot carry bear spray but you may carry a firearm under a concealed permit. That may or may not be a possibility going forward, depending on state laws. Also, a handgun has multiple uses in the backcountry that are beneficial for other emergencies, such as signaling for help. Before the days of GPS locators, I've had to use them to acquire food while we got ourselves un-lost & injured party members back to safety. A handgun is infinitely louder than a whistle or other audible signal device. Backpacking, especially when alone, requires constant compromises and doing without so a multi-use tool is always preferable to a single-use tool, no matter how effective that single use tool may be compared with another. I don't have any answers for anybody else but I know what tool I prefer. Finally, don't get your hopes up of getting grizzlies back in CA. Putting them back in their native habitat means putting them near population centers, not the more remote Sierras.

I am well aware of the effectiveness of bear spray but wind is a constant here in NW Wyoming. Downwind situations are far less likely because your scent is carried ahead of you and a bear will most likely smell you coming and be gone. Upwind encounters are far more likely but will severely hinder your bear spray. For that reason I choose firearms but as you pointed out, anyone who makes that choice must be highly proficient with firearms. You also made the point that your best defense is situational awareness and having said the same thing many times myself, I couldn't possibly agree more. I think one should also recognize and accept the fact that it is a risk to enter bear country and that despite all your precautions, the worst can happen. It's part of the adventure of living in wild places and if you're not adventurous enough to accept that risk, maybe it's best if you get your thrills riding roller coasters or playing video games. I've encountered grizzlies before but I've yet to be charged. I hope it stays that way but I'm prepared if it doesn't.

You're getting at the most important and reliable deterrent-being with other people. However, your odds are best if you have multiple people who stand their ground and use bear spray. To my knowledge there is not a single case of a bear making contact with a person when two or more people stand their ground. A firearm is an unquestionable asset in the right hands. A warning shot can and often does deter a bear before they come within range of bear spray. And of course the appropriate gun in the right hands can end a threat once and for all if necessary. But it's really best to use bear spray first and in unison. The clear exception being a strong head wind.

Great video. It's not a competition, but when people say they need a gun for protection in the woods it's an immediate confession that they are strangers to wildlands and very likely suffer from Dunning-Kruger effect with firearms - thinking their half-assed once a year playing at a range makes them weapons experts. In Canada we are not allowed to carry handguns, but I'd much rather a can of bear spray anyway. When hunting, it would be MUCH more preferable close range than a long rifle - I have zero confidence I could hit a charging bear with my scoped .308. As for in camp, a 12-gauge with slugs is the ultimate safety blanket. It is the only thing with close range stopping power for smiting thine ursine enemy if it tries opening your tent like a candy wrapper. I'll still sleep with my bear spray in arm's reach (FYI most have a fluorescent part on trigger so you can always find it!), but in the supremely unlikely event of that horrific night-time predation attack, that shotgun could be your best friend.

@@blantant there are very few places on a bear that will cause instant death, nevermind hitting them during a charge. And even a fatal shot can take up to 20 seconds to register with the brain that PS bear, you're dead! In a charge and maul 20 seconds is a loooong time. To an intent bear, accustomed to pain when fighting off rivals or wolves, they can plow through without seeming to notice the sting of a bullet. Pepper spray acts on the senses - sight is affected dramatically, as is smell. It tends to be noticed and responded to instantly, because loss of senses makes the bear vulnerable, and they know that. If they can't see or smell the inclination - most of the time - is to get away from the danger, not press on. I believe that is a big part of why it is so effective. Nothing is 100% guaranteed.

I agree that the vast majority of people are best advised to carry bear spray. I also think that having someone deploy the bear spray while someone else is ready and able to use a firearm if needed would be ideal. Your firearms handling at times had me feeling concerned you may not have received the best training and advice. Yes, that is my opinion, and like a-holes, we all have one and don't think our own stinks. Carrying a pistol like a Glock with an empty chamber, planning to chamber a round under stress and then shoot a charging threat is not something I'd advise. Lowering a rifle, bolt or lever action, to cycle the action then re-shoulder it to fire another aimed shot under stress, is also not something I'd advise. Both of these are indicative of something you mention yourself in your video. If you're not extremely competent with your firearm of choice while under stress, it's unlikely you'll be able to use it effectively when needed most. 🍻

You should carry both if you're in grizzly bear country its a fact, that's the age-old " Id rather have it and not need it, then need it, and not have it" situation. I was asked many years ago to be a shooter for protecting scientists from wild game in Alaska and more,so the scientists can take a core samples and other types samples so on, so forth. The first thing you try to do, is dissuade the bear from trying to attack the people, AKA scare the bear off by warning shot, helicopter fly by, bear spray, yelling. if that doesn't work, you use Force. (So bear spray would definitely be something you should bring always) always bring spray, but if that doesn't work then sometimes you need Force. If you're still not going to bring a gun with you then bring a couple bottles of actual bear spray and hopefully thats enough to get away. I bet bear spray would work on a cougar as well FYI tho iv never heard if anyone has triedit or not, there is alot of them around here too. I'm glad you said that because a 12 gauge is my first option, and my grandfather made me fall in love with 300 Winchester magnum.tho typically i carry a hand daily if im further out away i have my 12 typically.

Excellent advice. I would add, make sure you're proficient with your defense systems, otherwise they're just a security blanket.

@HomeInWildSpaces yeah exactly, that was a big thing that I said about a self-defense weapons as well or Home Defense weapon, the weapon isn't really as important as making sure you can use it efficiently and effectively useing it. That you are comfortable and confident with it. A hunting rifle is probably not a great Home Defense tool, but if you were to use it properly, you could mitigate bad accident and other people being hurt, by using self defense rounds, lower velocity rounds, or ones specifically for expansion not penitration for self defense.

Very good video. Thank you. I've hunted in grizzly country in AK and BC and thankfully never had a problem, but I share the notion the best way to go is to carry both-the most powerful firearm that you can shoot accurately and bear spray. I've even thought that carrying a compact back-up pistol with hard cast bullets might not be too bad of an idea since in a fair number of reported bear attacks the bear slams into the person and knocks the guy's pistol out of reach and the mauling begins. For me, it would be nice to have both tools or even better- the three tools. Of course, I get it, people want to cut weight that they are carrying or humping long distances in a backpack while hunting or hiking, but all things considered, life saving equipment in bear country should not be discounted.

Question. After a successful deterrence using bear spray, what should be a backpacker's next course of action? Assume that no one was injured and their equipment is still intact. Can they just remain in the area and set camp as normal? Leave the immediate area and find a new, more distant location to camp? End the trip? In other words, should the person be concerned about repeat encounters with the same bear?

Terrific question! I'll discuss in greater detail in future videos, but I will say this. A deterrent is like wearing a seatbelt while riding in a car. The odds of needing it are pretty small, but you'll sure be glad you have a deterrent should you need one. Some advise carrying two cans of bear spray in order to mitigate concerns like those you've expressed. And sometimes you don't need to empty a whole canister to deter a bear, so one canister may be enough. Without a crystal ball, it's hard to say for certain. In general, if you've had an aggressive encounter (an attempted attack or repeated hostile encounters) with a bear I would advise you end your trip and contact wildlife authorities asap. If you have seen a bear or bear sign near your campsite, I would move camp a mile or more away. But it's also helpful to learn to read a bear's behavior. On at least one occasion I had a bear wander though my campsite within 10 feet of my tent, but it was clear the bear was not looking for food or even curious about us. It was just moving from point A to point B and my camp just happened to be in the middle. Sometimes you just have to make your best judgement call. I advise erring on the side of caution. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

while you are waiting on that video to come out, If you have deployed spray and succesfully avoided a bear attack you should vacate the area. Some bears may be fully scared away but some are quite likely to return. Bears like people are all different and its best not to gamble with your life .

How about the QC on the bear sprays? Are they reliably going to spray when you need them too? Who is overseeing this? Do you know the statistics of them not working?

As far as I've been able to discern, bear spray misfires are not a recurring issue. But, your concern demonstrates a key element of bear safety. Ideally, you never want your safety to hinge upon a single defensive option. I hope you'll watch my Bear Attacks ABCs video. It goes over layering your defenses and effectively guaranteeing you'll never be attacked. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9ihlJd8zdDUg3k.html

I can't go out and walk, but I love your videos. This needs to be mandated for hiking bear country. Do you teach?? You truly have that knack, and thank you for these vids. You are truly amazing! Think of the folks you have saved....or even prevented from doing something stupid.....you rock~

Your right. It’s amazed me how so many people are ill-informed. I’ve always told people that bear spray should always be on you in back country but just in case the bear spray doesn’t work like the case of wind or other variables you should have a firearm and you shouldn’t just go shooting the bear if it’s not charging you, a pop shot to try to scare the bear off should be the first thing. If you do have to shoot the bear you need to make sure you know where to place your shots and be proficient enough to hit your target. Long story short I would recommend both and also whatever you choose to carry make sure you practice regularly. And also know what condition your self defense item is in and like he said always be aware of your surroundings. Be mindfull and aware and diligent when in backcountry. Don’t take it as just a leisurely stroll through the park because it’s not and you could get yourself killed thinking of it as that

You can’t just says “guns” though, you have to control for the type of firearm. Someone with a bolt action rifle isn’t going to defend themselves as easily as someone who has a shotgun with slugs. I think if you controlled for type of firearm the results would be very different

Fantastic breakdown of the evidence, thank you! Those gun negligence clips really are horrifying. There's a sentimental attachment to the frontier warrior ideal, which encourages poorly-trained people to endanger themselves and their loved ones. No one wants to talk about the thousands of accidents and suicides that happen so much more frequently because of handgun availability. Just look at how hard cops find combat pistol shooting, even with far more training than many complacent gun owners are willing to put in.

Excellent comment. I'm a huge proponent of proficiency, but when it comes to firearms proficiency is a much higher bar than most people realize.
