The 15400st has the best looking and balanced dial. The word automatic on the dial is historically important as the first Royal Oak was the first sport watch (automatic) and paved the way for all other sport watches. The 15400st is the 41mm closest to the original jumbo 39mm.

Love the dial markers and the Thinner profile of the 15400ST and I love the case back and the sharper Brand symbols of the 15500ST

At first I thought I would like the 15500 more. The seconds hand is so cool with that hollow balance bit. Plus, I hate that obvious "AUTOMATIC" on most of the dials. Having said that, the more I watched your great comparison, the more I liked the 15400. It's dial is more... Complete, fuller. In a good way. The newer APRO looks barren, underwhelming even. Thanks for this footage!

The 15400 caseback sucks compared to the 15500s but as looks I prefer the 15400. Ofc, any Royal Oak it's amazing! They both incredible and fit you well !

I actually like your reference better and prefer ROs going even much further back. RO was once a very fresh watch design and even in earlier iterations a bit girly. Then it became a franchise watch for AP and the original design has over the course of time been subject to the most minute improvements. I doubt the truth of the RO cocktail napkin creation story but the original ROs were smaller and visually more fluid and spontaneous. Sometimes the more longer lived a watch model line becomes the more likely it is that the original design DNA will be modified. I am espousing a conservative line. Perhaps design should not always be frozen in time but sometimes the designs closest to the original iteration are more in harmony with the original design genesis. Had AP followed this kind of purism instead of constantly tinkering with the RO, the RO would have probably gone commercially out of production by 1990. Cranky old men should not be listened to.
