I am a neurodivergent clinical psychologist. My growing theory is that neurodivergence is the brain’s evolution away from dopamine dominance to alternative brains less likely to destroy the environment they need to survive as a species. Dopamine drives much of our destructive behaviors like addictions, gambling, excessive consumption,competition, and greed. ADHD and ASD are dopamine deficient but seem to leverage oxytocin for motivation, which creates the opportunity for more pro-social and pro-survival motivation (relationships, care for animals, connection to nature, love, low-competition needs, etc.). High functioning ASD brains also seem to be able to utilize their neo-cortex for motivation (learning, researching, thinking, conceptualizing) rather than the more primitive limbic brain and it’s dopamine dominant system. Again, this seems to suggest evolution rather than disorder. I have reached out to oxytocin researchers to discuss my observations as a clinician. One affirmed my observations but the problem with the “research” is that it is almost entirely based on male subjects. He said even the rat lab rats are male! This has to change if the research is to be meaningful and if we are to truly understand the FULL spectrum of experiences and possibilities.

I agree that research needs to stop being so male-centric because women’s brains do function somewhat differently. However, imo oxytocin has more of a calming and relaxing effect - not a motivating effect.

Very interesting theory. And it seems to me that this would once again shake up this famous "legend" falsely and solely based on the term "empathy" (as if empathy were the only way to be aware of the other) which says that autistic people would feel nothing towards others (which in my everyday life turns out to be totally false and my experience would tend to show the opposite). Neurodivergent people would therefore act while being aware of the other, (Duuh!! what a surprise!!) which is not the definition of empathy, I grant you, but which shows a much more pronounced interest for the lives of others, for the community. No, not everyone needs to put themselves "in the other's place" to take them into account and take consequential actions and live a life in harmony with others. After all, look where this so-called wonderful empathy has taken us!!

Well, even just positive interactions with other people are greatly undervalued in society even though these interactions themselves are the biggest source of oxytocin. The over-competitive and often even hostile environment isn't just a loss of what autistic people can contribute but also is damaging to the entire potential of everyone. Where once overly competitive environments are considered to be preferred are now actually destroying us.

my favorite interations with others are fairly fleeting. A passing hello or even short chat with a stranger, never to be seen again. I suspect Autism is too integrated into our neurology for any single drug, hormone or behavioral strategy to "fix" it's social impact. Like the blind, we have hard functional limits. With autism, these limits are hidden, insidious, and pervasive. They are imposed by our extreme biologicaly / neurologically based sensory deficits and sensitivities. There is currently no way to "fix" these limits / differences. Trying to do so is uneccesary, dangerous and futile. Autism's limits are also it's gift, but only if identified, respected, and embraced. Like a blind person, we can learn coping strategies and adapt to our environment, but never completely. If respected, our limits bring strengths, the same way a blind person might hear and feels the world more clearly. Our deficits will always cause difficulties however, and will limit us, just as lack of vision prevents blind people from driving. If we or others insist we overcome our hard limits, it's the same as forcing a blind person to drive on a freeway. Someone's gonna get hurt. As a very late diagnosed autistic person, my goal is to identify my hard limits, and to respect them. As I do this, I'm letting others know about them so that they can support me. Results are mixed so far, but that's better than the hell of going undiagnosed and unsupported for 57 years.

At 80 for my diagnosis, I agree with your assessment. My coping mechanisms were to leave situations, without any explanation, most of the time. Now, family and friends get some feedback on the “why” of my behavior. Usually, exhaustion or sensory overload. Some things just have “hard functional limits”. We deal with them the best we can.

I'd argue Autism is a mix of abnormal brain pathing, as nueral network remaps itself to compensation, mixed physical trait of the body dropping into a survival alternative biological mode, like a computer has safeboot. We litterally are so different because alternate nueral pathing/remapping, and environments we adapt to. The body functionmay be triggered in the fetal state, or later, but it impacts neural pathing. Neural pathing affects everything mentally.

I nursed all my babies, for years. I am very attached to them, their smell. I miss them terribly now that they're grown and doing their own thing. My own mother used formula, didn't hug us very much although i know she loved us. I am only now figuring out that i am on the spectrum as was my mother and my siblings. But we each seem to form attachments differently. Whenever i would look for a mothers day card, the sentiment expressed in those greeting cards never described the type of relationship i had with my mother. I strived to have that kind of relationship with my own children. I Have stronger attachments to people i see and interract with in person frequently than I do long distance or infrequently. But a close bond, once formed. doesn't seem to be diminished by time spent apart. We can reconnect after decades apart and pick right up where we left off. At least that's how it works for me

But, I used my somewhat capacity to focus intensely and over the years I managed to clear out almost all allergies, asthma gone, no Chrohns any more and pretty much learned how to navigate this reality. And, Oxytocin is a big factor. Only way to get that naturally is, well, be near others. But only found a few people throughout my life that I have even been able to be near as most have a "vibe" or simply lacks coherent presence and thus, being near such regular people is like hanging out with animated dolls. I was gonna guess oxygen. You should either get a brighter recording-type lighting situation, or not stand with your back to a bright light, because your camera’s auto-exposure feature will automatically select a setting that will make you darker than…optimal.👍 Such stark contrast between background and foreground, dark and light, is virtually impossible to reconcile, with modern photographic technology. Ever notice how, in a movie, the sun will be a perfect orb sitting slightly above the horizon, but the landscape between the sun and the camera looks almost like it’s still dark? That’s not real life, it’s just the exposure setting on the camera. B T Dubs, great impersonation of Jim Carrey impersonating William Shatner! You’re moderately funny!

Stasha Gominak draws the distinction between vaccinations causing autism and vaccinations affecting autistic children more than others because of the weaker immune systems and gut issues of autistic children. Perhaps issues with the gut affect the ability of the gut to produce oxytocin. If that is the case then perhaps supplementing with Lactobacillus Reuteri would help (See William Davis)

oddly enough I didn't notice the background music until i read the comments. I was listening to it as 2x speed maybe that helps? but anyway I'm autistic and wrapping up my final semester in a Doctor of pharmacy program and from what I have researched the variations may also have to serotonin receptors and the stimulation of the oxytocin release. Additionally the critical period in the brain for social development plays a role. so lets say that the person was not releasing enough oxytocin but then we supplemented it then its effects would be largely impacted by the level of neuroplasticity in the brain. Also supplemental oxytocin can rapidly degrade and also be difficult to cross the blood brain barrier. Thus developing treatments that increase the brains ability to either release oxytocin or bind to oxytocin receptors agonistically with a stronger binding potential maybe helpful in cases where oxytocin receptors are under expressed. One thing that is interesting is that the critical period can be reopened through drugs like MDMA (which is going to be FDA approved in august for the treatment of PTSD) which also releases oxytocin through its effects on serotonin 1b and 1d receptors which happens to be the same receptors many migraine medications target (though they are immediate release and are significantly less potent). I think as genome testing becomes more popular and we learn more about the different variations how these receptors are functioning in those with autism and we learn more about how to maximize the benefit of reintroducing neuroplasticity and minimize it the risks in doing so, that we will start to see treatments that will help those with autism not suffer as much from masking all the time and hopefully find that Autistic burnout happens less.

The more connection and commitment we have an experiencing an orgasm, the more oxytocin we get. Masturbation is in my belief unhealthy, it does bad things to our neurochemicals in other parts of our body and nervous system! It's been proven that just as with tears, I'm committed sexual connections or masturbation don't provide oxytocin particularly well. The analogy with tears is that the ones we get from crying and having emotion actually eliminate a lot of toxins in the tear fluid! Whereas eye watering and tears from cutting onions or being in the wind do not. It's just sort of an empty experience lol. A good analogy imo. And I'm just sharing this because I was for a while a biology student but could not finish to get my degree to be a biochemist, and this might be useful information for someone 😊

Why isn't my system putting out normal levels of oxytocin. why do we often have gut issues. I am not on board with the idea that is somehow a good thing and that we shouldn't find some kind of cure. yes, people are wonderful and cope very well, but a lot of us aren't. Us in this capatalistic society that only values production and adaptation to become more productive, of course that system is trying to find cures. Like your ADHD, I too have a flavor of it, and while it might have some benefits for some, I wouldn't wish either of these things to any others to have to suffer with. Most unkowing people just think we are faking it and just are laazy or don't want to. I understand that is a limit of thier understanding but it doesn't make family events any less cruel. I am really struggling at 46, and hope might not be found for me before I rest, but I hope we make some kind of breakthrough on what lead to this. This might take DNA work, or quite possibly environmental, but whatever it is, big hugs to all of you!

I’m a 66 year old adult who was diagnosed in 2021. Unfortunately my highly intelligent and strong willed wife doesn’t buy the ASD / Asperger Syndrome. She feels that as an adult I should be able to overcome the issues. That my behavior is deliberate and planned to make her feel bad. I have been labeled as a narcissist and evil person.

Tripped and fell getting off the bus.. broke my ankle… walked myself from the bus loop (back of school) to the library to sit for a bit before eventually deciding I needed to go to the nurse. I was kinda chuckly and like “whoops! Haha shit happens!” She didn’t believe me. Called my parents after me insisting i needed them. She was like “theres some swelling but its no big deal” and during the time it took for my parents to show up it was worse. Dr confirmed.

I never understood why people like having some other thing about them exist. It took me a long time to talk and I'd often have to repeat things over and over. Then I started to lose my sight so I'd try to memorize stuff by walking to get water and stuff. I couldn't even make out the big A. Anyways, eventually I got glasses which was super weird. I could finally see. I loved running around when I was young and I didn't make much sound. Being around people always kind of made me sad tho because they were mean and childish. I was too probably but not too much because I grew close to God and I realized most things are quite stupid in a sense. Even me in a way, for existing. It sucks when you can't even get a job and even the other income sources suddenly don't function right or take a lot longer than they should. Now my car keeps turning on all the warning lights and turning off. And light bulbs keep turning on when they shouldn't plus for some reason the light bulbs in the city are on in the daytime. I keep seeing the same birds too and google changes the weather to mess with me. God might just kill everyone for trying to make me go insane. Honestly, I can't remember why I'm here. Even Spotify has been messing with me giving me songs about killing myself and dying alone. Maybe it is a statically anamolly, but idk sometimes it seems like this world isn't real. Lately God has been controlling the weather in my area which is nice. He helps remind me I'm not alone, but maybe I should actually forget this world.

there’s scientific data that suggests otherwise now regarding general ideas toward oxytocin’s role. is it published anywhere what are your credentials are, and also citation on these claims / ideologies of autism and oxytocin?

My thoughts too..Oxytocin has a relaxing/calming/trusting(of others) effect-not a motivating effect. I could maybe believe that people with autism may produce less Oxytocin but would also like to see studies on that. But the effect of Oxytocin (in general) is rather calming than motivating. What are your conclusions/findings in regards to the role of oxytocin?

Meaning when the mother produces less oxytocin the chances are higher that the child becomes autistic?
@rachaellawrence8635

@@IntegrityMeansAll, hard to say. Pitocin is so commonly used in inductions, and current ACOG guidelines call for inducing at 39 weeks. It’s curious, as only around 30% of pregnancies deliver naturally by 40 weeks. So it’s not always that a the mother would be making less oxytocin.
@IntegrityMeansAll

@@rachaellawrence8635 that’s interesting. I’d assume that the mother’s oxytocin levels during the baby’s/fetus brain development are probably more crucial (if they play a role) than during the actual birth..?

Sorry, this video doesn't work for me. There were no reasons relating to the topic. I just didn't understand anything because the music is louder than your voice and I have Asperger's Syndrome and for that I have a sensory disorder of unfiltered perception. I wasn't able to focus on the content. Instead, I heard an obtrusive monotone music and a human voice talking unintelligible in the background. Maybe it would have been different if I wasn't past a workday where I fought all day to understand people talking behind noise. I'm tired. I can't do it anymore.

Do you have eye contact difficulties or vision problem. Because i think sensory problems are the worst things with autism. Its ok think differently but when your senses are not working correctly everything else is terrible. Neurofeedback helps me with all my senses and I can't stressed enough now about how its vital. I have acces to all of my peripheral vision and I can't live without it now. My earing founction properly now too and it changed my life for the best really.

Well, interesting, but have you tried increasing the oxytocin levels of NOT the autist but the people who interact with the autist instead? Assuming the autist is not yet "totally gone" in the sense of being very disappointed in people and withdrawing, but still has some optimism. Maybe the autist would respond even more positively to higher oxytocin levels in other people without any modification to the autist? Autists can be good with animals, right? What if they don't see enough oxytocin in other people to justify a positive response?

The music in the background and the general audio show that you do not understand the issues facing people with autism. Im sorry but to be a doctor who treats autistic patients, you should have to be on the spectrum. Only an autistic person can empathize with the experiences of autism. I have a cousin with adhd. He is a very nice guy but he is completely incapable of empathizing with my issues from autism. He literally told me i would growout of it or if i smoked more pot it would "fix" me. Im sorry but after decades of abuse it should be illegal for non autistic doctors to treat autistic patients.

I believe in this video he referred to himself as having social deficits himself, and I've had the impression from other of his videos both he, his wife, and his kids are on the spectrum. If so, he might not have all of the traits -- for example noise filtering problems. Maybe he thinks the lighter jazz music is nice. I personally thought so, and I have terrible noise processing problems. However, what jumped out to me was the use of the phrase "butt hurt". I do understand many common phrases but this one is new to me. It sounds obscene and I can't imagine how it fits into what he's talking about.

@@debs.8953 Butthurt is an online slang term used to describe a strongly negative or overemotional response. It is used to draw attention to a person who shows signs of being irritated due to a perceived insult, an unfavorable situation, or a lack of decent communication. The term “butthurt” originates from spanking, the act of striking the buttocks of another person, which is often seen as a method of punishing a child. Though some cultures view this as an acceptable form of discipline, it can be interpreted as abusive corporal punishment. Online, one of the earliest archived mentions of “butthurt” appeared in a 1998 comment posted on the website of Swiss surrealist painter H. R. Giger.
