I thought Jason, did some stuff, that wasn't his dad's licks they were pretty damn good.Jimmy Page and Robert plant and John Paul Jones were smiling from ear 2 ear. If John Bonham were alive and watched that show, he may have said, damn son, that was a good lick to come out of that part. My point is, Jason may have played it different than his dad, but he made it is own and it was awesome and it was led Zeppelin and the senior members of led Zeppelin rocked and rolled again.

John "Bonzo" (He was also sometimes called " the Beast") Bonham was legendary. In later concerts Moby Dick could last a half hour of him improvising on the drums (one time, his drum solo lasted so long, Jimmy Page, the guitarist, had enough time to go to the hotel they were staying at and back). When he played with just his hands, his fingers would get cut by the rims. He'd occasionally use the biggest drum sticks on the market and called them his "trees". Yet his drumming could be very soft and subtle; he plays by pattering on a guitar case in their song "Ramble On" for example. Another beautiful song where the drumming is judiciously employed is The Rain Song. Sometimes how you don't play is just as important as how you do. Please do more Zep - any song - go down their song catalogue and pick one at random - you will NOT be disappointed!

yep even more is that in Bonzon mind towards the end of his life he didn't view himself as all that great of drummer. Thats my parents and elders who were around then told me. Im 49 so have very small memory of Zep but love John and his style of percussion with a passion.

He set the standard for what a great drummer should be. I am a drummer and it was because of watching him play when I was little. He was and still is the best. I'm glad to watched and enjoyed him. That feeling you got, that's why he played. Zeppelin fan born every day. Welcome to the club buddy :)

I get it ! ... no, no you dont, or youd be bursting like i am. Fastest? I dunno, best rudiment mastery? Prolly not, metronome timing? Never tested him that way. But mesmerizing? Damn right! Powerful? Mmhmm, inventive? Come on, are you watching what im watching?!?! Bonham had the keys, and took em with him. Heard a guy say " he isnt necessarily always the thunder, he THREATENS the thunder." His style of playing was the most soulful, organic and musical of all Rock drummers. Nobody could lay down a beat with such swing and groove in the world of rock like him. Truly unique

Yeah, absolutely. Also worth noting that they once let him loose with a double pedal, then took it away from him. That is the thing about truly great musicianship; it is rarely the case that more of a good thing is better, and the great musicians know it. Just look at the drum kit of Buddy Rich if you have any doubts.

The thing about Bonzo is he knew how to build and release tension. He's only drummer I can listen to when they do an unaccompanied solo. It's not about speed... it's drama.

I’ve seen videos where he was so excited playing that he jumped up off his stool. His love for drumming is written all over him. The greatest thing about him, to me, is the way he and Jimmy fed off of each other. It was truly a symbiotic relationship. Jimmy would go somewhere and somehow John was right there with him.

Thank you for reviewing this song. You just watched one of the worlds greatest drummers that walked this planet. This man paved the way for drummers. He’s the reason I picked up a pair of sticks. 😪 my heart gets heavy every time we're on the subject of Bonham and its mentioned that hes gone. He was one of the very biggest inspirations in my life. It was Kashmir, the first zeppelin song I ever heard, and it was his drumming that inspired me to pick up the sticks. I dove head first into my drumset, sounding like shit at first, until I got better and better, listening and playing along with my zeppelin albums and cds, now, I can pull off all of his chops, but i still dont sound like him, and no one ever will be able to sound like him. But not sounding like him, it's the fact that HE was the originator. He created that sound, and it died with him Leaving holes everywhere. Holes in the band, holes in the music industry, and a hole in my heart. Rest in peace John, I'm sure you now have a solid golden 5 pc set, and indestructible giant beat 16" and 18" crash rides, 15" giant beat hats, and your symbolic 24" GIANTbeat ride. Your using tree branches for sticks, cut from the tree of legends. Your legacy will never die my dear friend.

Zep didn't put out singles, most radio stations wouldn't play them because their songs were too long but they sold 300 million albums beating the beating the Beatles by 125 million albums (these figures don"t include singles). Zep never had a #1 hit because Billboard's top 10 is based on singles.

Their record company did put out singles, just not in the UK. Also, I love Zeppelin but they are 5th or 6th in album sales. The Beatles are way out in front. The figure you've quoted is for Zeppelin's total sales, albums AND singles. Even if the figure of 300m were correct, and it isn't, the Beatles would still be ahead of them. :)

Little bit late to this conversation. But I have to agree with Codex7777. A few Beatles numbers as of 2014. Worldwide album sales topped 600 million. In the US only 1.6 billion (with a B) singles sold and 177 million albums. Number of albums to reach number one in the United States 25. The number of songs in the top 100 is 21. The most by any band. Much is I love Led Zeppelin, and I do, it doesn’t even come close to the number of the Beatles have. And realize that was five years ago they sold more since then. I know so has Led Zeppelin.

AJ, every so often, I post a meme on Facebook I saved that says, “ Every day, every hour there’s a kid discovering Led Zeppelin for the first time”. When I was in high school, I used to turn younger kids on to Zeppelin. Watching all these videos is much like my school years. It’s fun watching you.

Honestly, some of the best Bonham drumming is in "Good Times Bad Times". The kick drum alone in that song deserves praise!

The world stood still in 1969, when that came out. Doing those triplets on one kick drum, crazy shit. A lot of drummers threw down their sticks. A lot more picked them up.

Man, have you seen the little Japanese girl, Yoyoka, play "Good times, Bad times"? She says John is her favorite drummer, she kills it, smiling the whole time. When I was her age I was still crushing my rolls and diddles, she's smooth as silk. If you ain't saw her give a look, it's refreshing.

I remember a Robert Plant (their singer)'s interview where he said that the band took breaks during Bonzo's solos, and a guy from the crew would knock at their door saying "sticks, guys", meaning that Bonzo resumed his sticks, so is was time to go back to the scene

@@johnnixon4085 John Nixon, definitely a great call on Terry Bozzio! Although more of a Jazz/Fusion drummer, we can't forget Billy Cobham. His work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra was actually an influence on Peart. Also criminally underrated is Phil Collins. His early Genesis work is so creative and laid the groundwork for progressive rock to come...not to mention his work with Brand X! Speaking of progressive drummers, Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson, along with his solo work is beyond reproach.

I saw them in my home town, where the band had to stop because there was a bomb threat. The Police decided it was a hoax and the concert started again, after a while there was a second threat and everyone said F*** it and stayed put and Led Zep carried on. It was 1972 and the IRA was bombing English cities, terrorism is not new

Your next 2 Zeppelin videos should definitely be 1. When The Levee Breaks and 2. Fool In The Rain. As crazy as he got live, his biggest strength was locking down a groove that fits the flavor of the song and he holds it steady.

I stood in line for 8 hours in 77 to get tickets. No "back up" band and they played for over 3 hours. In the middle of the show, they did an acoustic only set. Never seen anything like it before or since.

So glad to see someone appreciate bonzo- the hammer of the gods, the thunderfuck locomotive, after seeing him for the first time. And FYI. He got paid well-the same as the other three band members because they had the best manager in the business.

The "fifth member of Led Zeppelin", Peter Grant was legendary. His work rate was second to none and, while Led Zep were active, he worked exclusively for them. His reputation was phenomenal and he was known to go round markets looking for L-Z bootlegs just for the fun of it on his days off. If he couldn't find a policeman to confiscate the bootlegs he'd do it himself, and if the seller was foolish enough to try to stop him, he'd just as likely end in hospital. Also; on their early tours, Grantie would go ahead of the band to the next town and scout t out what the population liked best from their albums, report back to them, work the venue and spend the next day repeating the process. He also got them some of the best contracts in recording history. He also reportedly got an even share. That last fact demonstrates how much the band valued his influence.

No, that would be Keith Moon. Bonzo was an animal on tour because he hated touring and wanted to be home with his family, hence he drank to destruction, eventually his own. A very sad tale, but what a legacy he left, and his son, Jason, isn't too shoddy either. BTW, what really made Bonzo's drumming so special was the swing, not the pace or power. If you get the chance to ask any of the other members of the band, they'll tell you the same.

Big Zeppelin fan here. Just stumbled on to your videos and binged them all. Not only looking forward to more Zeppelin videos, but you should also check out Grand Funk Railroad. Another under rated drummer. They opened for Zeppelin in Detroit and Zeppelin's manager shut the power off and booted them out. The crowd was so wild, he was worried about being upstaged. To be fair, they were playing in there home town.

AyeJay, watching your first-time reactions to Led Zeppelin put a smile on my face through both videos! Yes, John “Bonzo” Bonham is arguably the GOAT. I certainly believe it! Still, John wasn’t the only immensely talented member of the band. Guitarist Jimmy Page can also claim legendary status as well as Robert Plant’s phenomenal vocal range. In the unlikely event nobody has suggested this already, check out these songs: “Immigrant Song” and “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” as two of many examples of Robert’s vocals. “When the Levee Breaks” is actually a cover by Led Zeppelin of a long-ago blues musician. It will show you some of their many influences. And last but certainly not least, listen to “Fool in the Rain” to appreciate how well the band worked together, even when John and Jimmy play to different time! AyeJay, I give you lots of respect for being open to the work of Led Zeppelin. Please let me know if read this! -Scott

"Wow, I can't believe I was asleep for this long!" Haha! I felt the same way. He woke me up too. Now 25 years later my ears ring incessantly, but it's worth it. It was great to watch you be intrigued by Dazed and Confused and then go full "Bonzo" on Moby Dick. Cheers!

I saw them live in Seattle in '72. Right place, right time. The concert went on for 4.5 hours. I've got the bootlegs and they fill 3 CDs with no duplicates. But during the concert Plant went to the microphone and said "That's everything we know. You want to hear xxx again?" and then they continued to play for another hour (I forget what song(s) he named) and the crowd continued to make a racket. Dad (who got tickets for me and a girlfriend drove us there and back) listened to it in the car parked on a nearby street - it was that loud.
