About BAKING YESTERYEAR
A decade-by-decade cookbook that highlights the best (and a few of the worst) baking recipes from the 20th century
Friends of baking, are you sick and tired of making the same recipes again and again? Then look no further than this baking blast from the past, as B. Dylan Hollis highlights the most unique tasty treats of yesteryear.
Travel back in time on a delicious decade-by-decade jaunt as Dylan shows you how to bake vintage forgotten greats. With a big pinch of fun and a full cup of humor, you’ll be baking everything from Chocolate Potato Cake from the 1910s to Avocado Pie from the 1960s.
Dylan has baked hundreds of recipes from countless antique cookbooks and selected only the best for this bakebook, sharing the shining stars from each decade. And because some of the recipes Dylan shares on his wildly popular social media channels are spectacular failures, he’s thrown in a few of the most disastrously strange recipes for you to try if you dare.
A few of Dylan’s favorites that are going to have you licking your lips and begging for more include:
● 1900s Cornflake Macaroons
● 1910s ANZAC Biscuits
● 1930s Peanut Butter Bread
● 1940s Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake
● 1950s Tomato Soup Cake
● 1970s Potato Chip Cookies
Baking Yesteryear contains 101 expertly curated recipes that will take you on a delicious journey through the past. With a larger-than-life personality and comedic puns galore, baking with Dylan never gets old. We’ll leave that to the recipes.

I think this is a choice. It makes sense that his video for Penguin Random House would aim for more broad appeal. People who know and love B. Dylan Hollis the frantic, hilarious baker, don't need to be sold. People who are just learning about B. Dylan Hollis the baker and author might be intimidated by his usual energetic style. Also, just from the standpoint of this being for Penguin Random House, differentiating his brand from there's makes sense.

Dylan’s adage that dry measures and liquid measures are the same, since it’s just volume, was literally a revelation to me, it changed the way I baked, blessedly. A lot of our dry measures have broken handles so we can’t read their amount but when I heard Dylan say this I became free. I can now measure my drys with no issue it’s such a relief, Thank you Dylan! I look forward to trying the recipes in your book with this newfound freedom ☺

It's weird to me that apparently many people, for some reason, believe that liquid & solid measuring cups ARE different. Like, why? 😅 I've always known that that's not the case; a cup is a cup, duh! The only reason the two are separate is convenience; liquids can be more easily measured when lining up with notches (& all can use a single measuring cup), while powders (which can pile & dip) are easier to measure with single specialized cups which can be flattened across the top to ensure accuracy. But of course, one could go between either in a pinch, or if you don't really need such precision.
@DAmaterasa
@DAmaterasa 10 ай бұрын
@@ZaCloud-Animations___she-her so what if you always knew? It’s probably just because of cross contamination, most recipes ask you to mix the wet ingredients first and you can’t put wet things into dry ingredient containers otherwise it’s ruined. Most people probably don’t think about how they’re interchangeable measures because their wet measures are already dirty by that point and unusable for dry stuff. I don’t appreciate you implying people are dumb because they didn’t “figure” it out like you did on my comment. Next time just make your own comment.

I was going for light-hearted puzzlement, but ended up wording it so condescendingly & it sounded like taunting & bragging. 😥 I'm so very, very sorry. You're absolutely right that it was a terrible reply that I had no business making in such a manner. My lack of coherency is no excuse; I just shouldn't comment at all if I'm not in my right mind like that, seeing how awful that could end up making someone feel. And I feel terrible for hurting you like that. 😞 I'm sincerely, deeply sorry, for bringing such negativity to your positive, uplifting comment. I didn't have ill will, honest... but I damn well caused as much harm as someone who would have. I'm 100% in the wrong, & I'm terribly sorry for it. I can remove it if you want to heal your beautiful comment's vibes, or leave it as a badge of my shame, & a reminder for me to never talk like that to someone ever again, especially when they absolutely deserved better. It's up to you...

Love the video, but it just isn't the same without his full sense of humor and innuendo. I get it, it's not HIS video, but his publisher's. The lighting is far too bright and the set too fake. But then, it is impossible to top the perfection of his full personality in his own charming kitchen. Did anyone else notice the lack of lemon juice in the second pie? He mentions it, but did not add it in the video. I also love how he measured the cream of tartar, not leveling off the measuring spoon, it's how I measure things.😆 I got the cookbook today and I am delighted with it. Oh my heart, he dedicated it to his grandma! He has commentary on each recipe that makes it a fun read. My daughter is allergic to apples, so I will definitely be making this pie. I highly recommend his Peanut Butter Bread recipe.

My maternal grandmother made both kinds of these pies. When Mom and Dad married, Mom made one of the cracker pies for Dad without telling him (we were poor). Dad got angry, refusing to believe her. Then he had Mom make one for a paternal family get-together without telling his sisters who had grown up during the Depression. My aunts also refused to believe it was a cracker pie, while my paternal grandmother just laughed and told them they had been eating cracker pies for years.

Mr. B. Dylan Hollis is the most refreshing thing online in a long time. He really has two different personalities inside him; one personality for his shorts and one for his longer videos and both are people I would gladly spend an unusual amount of time with in the kitchen. In this video, however, he’s neither of those refreshing and delightful personalities that I’ve come to adore but as others have mentioned, if he gets more comfortable in the set, he should be able bring out a third person that I would call my friend. Also, if you haven’t bought his cookbook yet, why not?? I bought on July 26 but I received a damaged spine so I gave it to my brother and I promptly bought another one for myself!!

My grandmother's applesauce was the best. Apples picked off the ground or given by neighbors, cooked with hardly a sprinkle of water, and run through a Foley Food mill. Her applesauce was so fine it could - or so it was said one year, be sipped through a baby bottle. Store bought applesauce just doesn't cut it. We also have a family applesauce cake recipe with (gasp) raisins, and black walnuts which we picked up in the pasture and spread on the gravel drive until the husks were removed. The walnuts then went into the basement until needed. Any meats not picked out after cracking went to the bird feeder.
