I'm with you on this. I did not expect this movie to be as batshit insane as it was. I walked in feeling tired and in a pissy mood and walked out 3 hours feeling energized. Give me Babylon any fucking day over Fabelmans.

Easy. They're both love letters to the movies (okay Babylon was a love and hate letter), both movies about the making of movies, they came out around the same time and they're both likely to get Oscar consideration. lol. Kind of a dumb question if you ask me.

I loved this movie. After watching everything everywhere all at once I thought to myself: this is gonna be the movie of the year for me, but then I saw Babylon. It is truly a masterpiece, Justin Hurwitz’s catching music, the cinematography, the characters and the overall experience. For me it was first time I went to the cinema alone (19), and there was like 9 others there, but still Babylon made me feel something special. I couldn’t care less about the other audience. I could av been alone in the room. The amount of details and Intertextuality is incredible. And you get that satisfaction when you are able to catch multiple references. My last year of high school I had this big project where I analyzed La La Land and it’s Intertextuality. After watching a dozen musicals and classic Hollywood movies, you truly begin to admire Damien Chazzeles work. La La Land went from a 9/10 to a solid 10/10 after all the time i put into the movie. I’m telling you guys this because of all the time I spent analyzing La La Land made be understand a lot of Babylons references and it’s tribute to Hollywood. Chazelle is a genius and I can’t wait to see more from him. Before you comment this, let me just excuse my English and the overall flow of this text. I wrote it on my phone and I am not a native English speaker.

I agree. It’s very easy to tear apart a film for its flaws, it’s ambition, it’s budget, how it fares against the director’s previous work, not meeting expectations, etc… but after enough time, one thing that remains constant is our desire to share in bonding experiences. Watching a film with a group and being able to share the laughter, the shock, the surprises with others, and connecting with those who also enjoy a similar POV, that’s always going to be there. I remember when The Big Lebowski came out and it was a dud. A few years later, there was a quiet reappraisal of the film and it has since become an iconic film. That movie has its share of flaws and warts, but it’s still beloved after all these years. Dazed and Confused is another example of a film that didn’t perform that well during its theatrical run and is considered a classic. Jackie Brown also felt like a bit of a disappointment when it was released and now some people think it’s his best film. This movie has its flaws but it also has more than enough to get the conversation going because it’s enjoyable and a hell of a ride. So yeah, it could end up being a beloved film as time goes by while in the present, it’s just going to be trashed.

The Tobey Maguire sequence was certainly a nod to Boogie Nights. The way his henchman was spitting intermittently to make us nervous was certainly a parallel of the boy lighting up firecrackers in the drug deal scene of Boogie Nights. I like the way Chazelle played with us, challenging us to figure where we've seen these things before. And that actually is what he wants to say. We've seen this before and it's just going to get regurgitated through ages of film history.

A lot of people enjoyed La La Land more and considerer it to be better than Whiplash. Both are excellent movies. Also lots of top critics are saying Babylon is a masterpiece and Chazelle's best work to date. So I don't really think he peaked with Whiplash. I think Whiplash was just a start for him. He is easily becoming one of the best directors alive, if not of all time.

I would rather watch "Sunset Blvd." over and over again which I do. Or "Singing in the Rain" which tells the same story. I would also rather go to the new foreign films and the many low budget independent films that are released to New York cinemas every week. I saw "Babylon" at the movie theatre last weekend and after watching the elephant defecate on the man in the first act, I knew the movie was going to be all on this level....and it was. The only good scene was the scene between the gossip columnist and Brad Pitt..no extravagant set, just two good actors and good dialogue. And the movie bombed terribly as far as box office receipts. So far the movie has only made 8 million on a 80 million dollar budget. Too much overacting and too much of a desperate attempt for spectacle......begging people to please come see this move. However, if you liked the film, I am happy for you as the American Cinema needs support right now as all the couch potatoes are sitting at home watching Netflix.

Movie was awful. Silly story that was unbelievable, dialogue unrealistic, and perhaps the worst ending to a film of similar magnitude. It felt like it was written by a bunch of film bros for film bros. I’m sure this will become a frat boy classic. It will not age well. There is nothing deep about it. If anything, it will go down a couple of notches in the years to come. Silly film.

@@theocean6524 as you have stated the writing was teriible, its has been an established part of filmaking that everybody thinks they can write. This comes from there film student days were you are encouraged to write your own material, this is correct because you are intimately connected to what you are making. Were it all goes wrong is when the filmakers now believe they can write scripts that the masses will also enjoy, therein lies the problem.Very few people can do what paul thomas anderson can do,very few.Take a giant like spielberg, he never writes his scripts,he supervises the story but he never actually writes his own scripts. He knows when to stand back, and it works.Unfortunately rubbish like quentin tarrentino, when he is not stealing other peoples work from the 1970s doesnt seem to quite understand this. I will say the orgy party scenes were done really well, the rest of the film not so much.
