My wife and I got a puppy earlier this year and I decided to take her out on a backpacking trip. Join us as we smell the flowers, climb over and under logs and almost get swept away in Highrock Creek in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness.
I also want to thank my first 100 subscribers by donating $100 to Trailkeepers of Oregon. I plan to make a $500 donation to another organization once reach 500 subscribers. Let me know in the comments who you think I should donate to.
THIS HIKE
There are a couple different trails you can use to access this area of lakes. The shortest route to Fish Lake is via Beaver Swamp Trail #1569 which is where we began. This trail is fairly open and seems well maintained all the way to Fish Lake. From there we took Indian Trail #1573 which was absolutely covered in downed tree's. I sure got a workout lifting Pippa over 25+ logs. The remaining loop after intersecting Lakes Trail #1578 is in pretty go condition with only some downed tree's and a few stream crossings. The campsite at Cliff Lake did have more trash than I would expect, even an inflatable raft and changes of clothes. Please help by packing more out than you brought in. Be sure to check trail conditions before venturing out: www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/umpqu...

First time I went to this lake, I was about 4 years old. Back then, we were allowed to use Trail type motorcycles-which we did. My uncle shuttled it back and forth until we were all in. Did you take the trail that only takes about 45 minutes to get to the lake? It looks like you may have taken the longer trail that you come to first. The shorter trail starts with a big downhill and there hasn't been a picnic table there that I have ever seen. There's an excellent water spring right above that big tree that you showed on the left side of the trail near the corner of the lake. Water is pure, ice cold and comes right out of the ground about 10 feet from the trail. There used to be a log cabin for rangers on the East end of the lake and if you know what to look for, you can still see the remains of the concrete base that they used to level the ground. Still my absolute favorite. A busy day at Fish Lake means you see 2 other groups of people.

Kelly, thanks for the stories and great info! I took the shorter trail into Fish Lake but I crossed over the outlet on a trail to head over to Cliff Lake for the night. The next day I continued the loop around back to fish Lake and went across the eastern shore of Fish Lake on the way out. I didn't realize stop and relax at the lake but I saw quite a few flat areas where a lot of people have been camping or it looks like perhaps that's where the cabin would have been that you mentioned. I'm disappointed I didn't take time to explore more now that I know that there was cabin remains.

@@Hikingindepth You could take either trail and still cross over where you did. There was a spot where the sign pointed to both trails. If you came down a steep hill right before that, you would have been on the shorter trail. The shorter trail doesn't get near a creek until the two meet for the last 1/2-3/4 mile.

@@k33elly I remember that sign, we definitely came downhill via the shorter trail.

@@MrOregonCurtis Cool. Yeah I never take the long trail, but that's partly because we pack a boat in and camp at the lake for several days. It makes the hike out a real bear. Last time I went there, we found some wild strawberries growing right next to the trail on that downhill slope.

Love this area. I was born In Roseburg Oregon. Love Fish Lake, have been to Buckeye and Cliff Lake. All of this was fifty Years ago. Are there still little wood lean cabins at the camping spot on Fish Lake?

Micheal, thanks for watching! I had an excellent time in this area and can't wait to go back to the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness. While on my trip I didn't see and wood structures, my guess is that they might've been removed when the area was turned into a wilderness area. Perhaps there are some structures around that I didn't see though. Do you have any other area's near Roseburg that you would recommend going camping?

@@Hikingindepth The upper North Umpqua has some hiking trails. I was a boy scout when I was 14 years old. I believe we hiked into a spot called Twin Lakes. the first lake U come too was alright, we hiked around the second one it was crystal clear. Mind U my friend this was 52 years ago. Stay safe!
