Just a piece of advice on you sampling method. You should go out in you boat and get you samples from the deepest part of the pond, especially the dissolved o² test. Surface water will always have a higher dissolved O² due to surface agitation from wind action. I've done a fair amount of water sampling.

A few tips surrounding long term viability of the pond: 1. Adding plants/vegetation ensures proper oxygen levels 2. Adding tiny fish/invertebrates for cleaning of the pond keep the water quality high and even provides food for the fish 3. Like a comment earlier, make sure to test the water levels thoroughly, also on the deep end of the pond. Great content and love this project!

The particulates will settle over time but you could add some pond flocculant to clear up the water quickly. A little bit goes a long way so it's an economical solution to getting crystal clear water in a short time, and it's not harmful to the fish. To maintain good water quality & reduce the growth of algae & pond scum you should start putting in some aquatic plants as soon as possible. Selecting them & p[lacing them around the pond would be a good project for your wife & daughter. The plants help to keep the ammonia level down and will consume the excess nutrients that you're adding with the fish feeder. If you don't have plants to eat those nutrients then you'll start getting algae problems since the whole pond is exposed to direct sunlight. I haven't heard you mention anything about adding some catfish but they're a good species to add to a pond.

GREAT content. I built a pond myself many years ago, and I can tell you that if you want to raise (and retain) oxygen levels in a pond, there's certain pond plant species that oxygenate pond water. Among the best are: arrowhead, eelgrass, fanwort, hornwort, and red rotala. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

I had a 20’ windmill near my pond with a air defuser in the deepest spot of my pond. At the time I lived between Syracuse and Watertown NY and my pond never had ice in about a 15’ circle above the defuser. Fish had fresh oxygen and some warmer water even though temps would go as low as -25 at several times during the winter. In the summer, the cold water at the bottom of the pond was a great benefit for the fish during those hot summers. I highly recommend that you get one, maybe install it on your island.

The biggest thing you’re going to run into is lack of minerals for the plants and lack of beneficial bacteria for the fish waste. The fish for the most part will be fine at 6.5 but without the beneficial bacteria you’ll run into some ammonia spikes that could hurt the fish. Go to a local fish store and buy an API master test kit for fresh water and test the shiner tank each day to see how it goes. They also have other API tests for calcium, magnesium, potassium and so on that plants need. Looks beautiful though and can’t wait to see it stocked.

A pond that size will have more than enough time to cycle before the ammonia level has enough time to become harmful. He said he’s adding smaller fish first and adding them slowly and not all at once. Keep in mind that the pond has naturally started its nitrogen cycle since the moment it first got water in it. Plant matter falls in and decays, animals walk through and there is probably some waste in it already. Besides, even if he added everything at once I doubt he’s adding enough to have a harmful ammonia spike.

Don't forget the "T" perches (on a pole, nice and high) for your owls & hawks! It will help those birds stay off of the fish feeder as these predators are simply looking for anything high up so they can scan the hunting ground. I also would put some "fine" fish structure close the blue gill beds so the hatched minnows have a place to hide....quickly! Otherwise, there is a lot of open water before they will find any cover whatsoever.

I’ve loved seeing this pond construction journey, and I can’t wait to see it finally finished! I’d also suggest, if you have spare time, going around to local creeks and wild ponds and collecting small native fish and any native aquatic plants that you like, and adding them to the pond to add as much baitfish/forage diversity as possible.

Loving the pond build so far and cant wait to see it with the fish in it, but I am concerned that when you add them you will have big spikes in ammonia and nitrates. You need what's considered to be "beneficial bacteria" to combat the waste from the fish, among other things. Adding plants to the pond will not only do that but will also create oxygen exchange in the water(if you are concerned about that). The plants will also provide many other benefits such as hiding places for bait fish and smaller bass. Good luck and again, I can't wait to see it with fish in it!

I constructed a trout lake in 1998 here in county meath, Ireland. I was the craziest guy in the county when it was in construction but now it’s considered a local amenity! When I was about this full, I got all concerned about water quality. I rang my fish supplier to see if he had any details regarding water quality and his response was “ I’ll bring you 200 trout, we’ll pop them in, and if they don’t float, you’re good to go!” I did plant lots of aquatic plants even before it had filled, and hey ho, it’s a natural flyer twenty years later! Don’t panic about the details, if the pond is big enough, nature will make it safe! We’ve been operating as a day ticket fishery and motorhome park since then, and all is good! Loving your series!

What is not to like about this fella? -He's living many people's dream. -Constructs a meticulously designed and executed pond. -Has great energy and presentation without screaming, yelling or acting crazy. -Gives the impression that it's not all about him. -Interactions with his family seem classic and genuine. -Doesn't waste time talking about things unrelated to the pond, fish and wildlife. -Get's right to the point. -Doesn't take you on shopping trips Wal Mart. -Smooth, calming voice and a gentile southern accent. -Seems to love what he's doing and wants you to enjoy it as much as he does. To that final point, he's mentioned underwater live stream cams. I can't wait to see those activated.

Wow! Look how full its gotten!! The only marinade & seasoning you need for chicken & beef is bottled Italian dressing. 15-20 min in a zip lock & it will be the best steak, ribs, chicken you've ever had. Shake off excess, the oil in it can cause lil flare ups, but keeps the moisture in. We douse ribs in bbq sauce the last 5-10min on the grill. Makes the best grilled vegies too! Cut in strips 3/8" & marinate for 15 min, put it on foil on the grill, we use a large meat fork to stab holes in the foil first. Parsnips, all kinds of squash, bell peppers, etc. We arent kidding- the BEST.

I'm loving these vids for the pure footage of the animal life that shows up and interacts with the pond. So awesome.

I seriously and obviously naïvely thought that this part of yours would’ve filled up completely in a matter of days. Shows how little I know.

I am a long time aquarium fishkeeper, when doing dissolved oxygen test you should invert the sample vial and submerse it several inches below the surface. Taking the sample on the surface will give inaccurate readings.

Italian salad dressing makes a great marinade for steak. If ya haven't already, try it sometime! You guys sure have come a long way since "the backyard pond" only 3 yrs ago! The whole place is turning out beautiful.

Maybe you could put a T shaped post out there for the raptors to perch on? You could make it as tall as you wanted, and it might encourage other large birds to check your pond out in the future.

The shape of the pond is similar to Namibia 🇳🇦 without the Zambezi strip. Love your channel 👍

I’ve really enjoyed this pond build series. You should eventually put some crawdads in your pond, they are a good source of food for bass also. You will probably get some naturally but adding some will give them a jump start. My ponds are full of them. The only problem with the owls and hawk being in the neighborhood is you will probably have a problem with them attacking your ducks when you put them on the island. Other than that the pond is looking great. I can’t wait to see you catching huge bass out of your pond in the future.

Wasn’t that young deer the sweetest little thing . The pond is looking so good , this is such a surprising video to me . I tripped over it and have stayed with it from big machines until now . This world is not my world in the least , but I enjoy seeing it , and thank you for offering your world to us .

You should put an outdoor kitchen island on the dock. Especially with all the cooking you do there already

It's been great watching the process of building a pond from scratch. Really has turned out awesome and looks like for the most part you have realized all your goals from when you started. Cheers to you and the familia and the years of enjoyment it will bring them and all your new found friends once the catch and release part begins!
