I had my knee replaced back in 2020 at the age of 51 as a widower so I can somewhat relate to your anxiety. What I found is we are more resilient than we give ourselves credit for and it’s only realized when we have no other options. I never thought at 51 Id love my walker so much…lol. Almost cried when my therapist took it from me. Hang in there, better days are ahead.

Day 7 in rehab. Wow. Time flies when you're having fun. 😕 You're on the road to recovery. Like every other ride, there are ups and downs, twists and turns. It's important to navigate what is directly in front of you but your focus needs to be farther down the road, as far as you can see. You need to avoid target fixation. It's easy to focus on something bad, but you ride where you look, so don't focus on the negatives.

You have come a LONG way in 7 days! And seven days from now you will be even better and even stronger, because it's what men have done since the dawn of time. You are a Moto Giant Beast (in a good way🤣) and I have no doubt that you will adapt well. I sometimes get that WTF feeling after heart/respiratory issues, but I know I'm still very blessed, and that there are many in cancer centers & hospice who would gladly trade me spots in a minute. So, every day I get my fat ass up and get it done while thanking God almighty along the way because that is just who we are. I don't know you, but I'm damn proud of you and thank you for letting us all walk beside you on this journey of yours. Take care Don, God Bless.

Getting ready to do some of the TAT leaving this Saturday. Plan on camping as much as I can. Just replaced my ‘08 KLR with a’22. My first lesson learned is that my blue tarps are way to getto. You CAN order food delivered to the hospital. We did that for my wife’s mom, a real foodie, when she was stuck in the hospital for a while. Of course, you may need a visitor to pick it up in the lobby for you if you can’t get there. Hmmm, do you have to worry about your calorie intake now because you’re eating for 7/8’ths of a Moto Giant now? (Still too soon? I’m an arse!) You’re looking good!

Hey man, hang in there. Things like this are a long road. Been through the dance with death myself. It has taken me several years to get back close too normal. I was in great shape at 48, working out, running 5 miles a day, and mountain biking up to 40 miles in a day on occasion for fun. Then out of nowhere I end up in emergency heart surgery. Heart bypass x4. That did a real number on me! Physically and emotionally. Things like this tend to change one's perspective on life. Just keep going, 1 minute, one hour, one day at a time.

Cripple? Don't think so negatively. I was knocked off my bike by a car driver a couple of years ago. I've (mostly) fully recovered now but I was in a full leg cast and hand cast for a while. It seems daunting now but you can cope with it. I remember getting home and having to get myself up to bed the first night. I had to drag myself up the stairs with my one good hand and leg. Getting out of bed at night on crutches wasn't great. But over time it got better. Easier each day even while still in a cast. I appreciate I didn't lose a limb but my point is that you'll have some bad days at home to start with. Then you will adapt. It WILL get easier. Funny story... while I was having my cast replaced at the hospital the nurse laughed (in a nice way) when I told her I was knocked off a bike. She said she'd recently had a biker in with a broken leg that had cut away part of his leg cast so he could carry on riding his bike. Brotherly love from a UK biker. Keep well man.

I hate that you are going through this. 😞 And the weird way it happened. Your accident really makes me second guess my decision to buy my first motorcycle. At the age of 56. Its a 69 Honda 350. I got it on the 24th. I don't know if I will find the guts to learn to ride it. Such a tiny worry for me though, compared to your struggles. Peace and love to you. edit: OH, your family can bring you food!

Listening to your concerns about going home and there not being the same support as in hospital, I really could relate to this. I was in hospital for a total of 5 months (May 2017 to October 2017) and during some of that time, the hospital management were actually trying to send me home! I hadn't had my left below knee amputation at this point. I'd had a huge skin graft on my left leg and this turned infected in around July. They totally misdiagnosed my condition. During a visit to another hospital, it was confirmed to me that I had in fact got gangrene! In May when I had the skin graft, I asked the consultant whether or not I'd face amputation if this didn't work. He said I would. So, here we are in August, and it is confirmed that amputation is my only chance. I was cool about this the whole time, despite the fact that on three occasions the hospital had suggested, no almost insisted that I go home!! At home, I had had a profile bed installed in my lounge, stairlift fitted and commode in my dining room. This is a typical 3 bed semi-detached house, so not much room for a wheelchair. So, I had my amputation on the 5th September and was home on the 4th October. Of course, when I got home, the loss of my dear wife Lynn really hit me. That's when the grief officially kicked in. Hope all is going well Don. 👍🏻

I had a friend once who drifted out of his lane and was clipped.....he lost his left leg above the knee, very lucky to have survived. Unfortunately, he had no swing control of the left leg prosthetic and would tumble often. It was only controlled by weight of the prosthetic. Getting home into familiar surroundings and decent foods will do wonders for you. All the Best!

I only discovered your channel about a year ago and enjoy your videos. I am an old lady who rides alone both on and off road. I was absolutely Shocked when you had your accident !! I can’t believe you lost your leg ! After about 40 + years of riding, I just recently started to buy protective gear. I have always had a helmet, but I just this year bought boots and a jacket with armor. I am definitely going to push myself to wear it. Also, I find it funny (not ha ha funny) that your friend Richard also has one leg. I’m sure he will help you in your recovery. I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for the update! What's the plan for getting around before the prosthetic? Crutches or a wheel chair or both? If I were you I would be doing as much research as I could to decide what kind of prosthetic works better, the pin lock or suction. Use your resources as well, I'm sure Richard would be able to give you some insight on all this. Hoping you get out on Friday my man! If I was closer to ya I would bring you some real food!

You will do great, Get someone to install a pullup bar for you in your restroom area. Get a non-slip mat for the tub. Home Depot has everything you will need. The biggest problem area I faced, was in the bathroom area. Your insurance should pay for the equipment you need for getting in and out of the tub. Just take it slow.

Making prosthetics is my 25 plus year career. This is my opinion on the first prosthetic design. I start new wearers with suction sockets. I find it is more comfortable to start people with this design. A pin locking socket is holding the prosthesis on at the distal end of your residual limb where the surgical incision is located. Therefore, the prosthesis is being held on in the area where the tissue is has had the most trauma. Every time you swing your leg forward to transition from stance phase to swing phase of gait, there is tension/axial force at the locking liner interface and your residual limb with the pin locking liner. Hence, more stress at the tissue with the greatest amount of trauma. The suction socket is holding the prosthesis on from the top of the socket with a connection to your thigh, so less force coupling at the end of the residual limb. Interview prosthetists in your area and make sure you are comfortable with your practitioner because you will need to have a person who listens to your concerns and addresses them as prosthetic fit changes as you heal. You will be refit many times as you progress. FYI, I've been a fan way before this accident. Additionally, many other practitioners do start people with pin locking systems and people do advance. Pros and cons to each design that should be understood.

When I was in hospital for the 5 months, the food was very good. I follow Dr Suneel Dhand on YT and he says how bad hospital food is for nutrition and that machines like the one you got your Coke Cola from. Not exactly conducive for healing for the body. Good to see you making progress. It was 4 years before I could actually wear a prosthetic! This has resulted in my fitness levels being extremely low.
