Guitar tutor analyses band-maid no god, reaction to my first time hearing this song including informal analysis and guitar lesson with music theory tutorial- coming at this from a professional musicians point of view. With easy to understand (hopefully!) examples, instrumental breakdown with riffs, compositional insights and all that good stuff from a gigging guitarist!
Feel free to leave any suggestions and requests in the comments. Or if you'd like a more comprehensive, less guitar-centric and more accessible breakdown of one of their songs.

This is easily one of my top 2 or 3 songs from Unseen World. I VIVIDLY remember hearing this the first time when the album finally dropped. I was literally laughing out loud with tears in my eyes when the change up comes after MISA's bass solo. It was SOOOO unexpected and such a BRILLIANTLY BOLD choice in a song that was such a raw, as you say, composition. I mean, I think very very few bands could pull off a change up like that but you know that Band-Maid can and will it was completely unexpected and surprising... at the same time it totally wasn't suprising. Only Band-Maid can make the unexpected expected and at the same time be a complete and total surprise. Keep up the good work. Love the breakdowns.... though you pretty much ignored MISA's part in this song which is fuxing EPIC. :)

Think that sound at the start is a backing track of a distorted male voice saying "1,2,3,4", synched to match her cymbal hits. If you think this had a rough, edgey and in-yer-face sound, wait until you get to the second song, "Black Hole" of the double bill ("Manners/Black Hole") they released a few weeks ago, taken from the same online concert. Apparently, Kanami asked Akane what her BPM maximum was and, when Akane said 200BPM, Kanami wrote the 220BPM sledgehammer of sound of 'Black Hole' to challenge her. So the story goes, anyway. Another superb analysis that even I, a non-musician (or audience member as we're known), learned a lot and, once again, helped raise my appreciation of the composition and playing skills of what is definitely THE best live Rock band inhabiting the galaxy. And beyond. PS I know you're the guitar guy (the reactor Wave Potter is the Band-Maid drum analysis guy and I know you'd both appreciate others' work) but I've only seen one analyser of Saiki's vocals, a reactor called Julia Nilon, but she's only done two songs, so any knowledge and understanding of the great work she does would be nice to hear. I mean, in this song for example, when the hell does she breathe? Those lyrics come as thick and as fast as everything else and just speaking them at that speed must be hard, let alone singing them.

That's cool, I'll need to listen out for that Tony! Always pushing each other to get better by the sounds of it! There's so much going on, I'd probably need to listen to just the vocals to pick up on stuff... I hadn't even though about breathing, now that you mention it I have no idea how she managed all that!

Great breakdown! I read in an interview that Kanami said her theme for this song was "Music is Freedom". So that may help explain some of the unconventional choices. This is a very rare thing in their song writing process in that Kanami almost always writes the music and Miku adds lyrics without any influence from Kanami about what she was thinking when she wrote the music. It also seems like they have an unusual process of writing the music before the lyrics without exception.

I also really enjoyed the head-shaking "Well, they did that! And it was impressive!" :) Maybe you should have some extra caffeine before you dive into Band Maid? From what I understand and how I read them, they are about not waiting for life, but making your own choices and picking your own way forward. Great breakdown sir, very interesting. In the different online concerts that they have done during these COVID time, the mix has not been the same (and on some occasions it has been clearly better than on others). And also all of them write their parts regardless if they can actually play it or not. Kanami said she wrote H-G-K much slower because she couldn't play it as fast as she wanted, them practice until she got "up to speed" with herself. Misa said the same thing but I don't remember which song it was, she said something (in an interview) like "I recorded the parts separately and then it got too hard for me to play, but it was my own fault". And yet, they played 100% of their songs live, so they eventually catch up to their own impossible standards. There in lies madness if you ask me!😜

@@YourMusicStore To complete the madness: I read in an interview with Misa last summer that at a certain point she hated her need for sleep. It was interfering with her progress on the bass! Here's something (maybe) interesting for you to check out sometime. Saiki and Miku do 99% of the singing (very rarely, Kanami will do some backing vocals). Here's some info on their vocal style inspirations. Saiki has stated that her favorite singer was the pop star Namie Amuro who retired from the entertainment industry a couple years ago. Before joining Band-Maid, Saiki was part of the same management company (Platinum Passport), and was training towards becoming more of a pop singer. Namie Amuro: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etedjNxm1p3SYJc.html Miku grew up on a style of music endemic to Japan called enka. This is a relatively modern musical genre that draws heavily upon more traditional Japanese music forms. Some people call it Japanese country music since it's historically been very popular in rural areas, but has nothing in common with Country Music from the USA. (The video below is Keiko Fuji; her daughter is Utada Hikaru, who is one of the most successful popular singers in Japan today. Her debut album holds the Oricon record for most copies sold.) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbyfa7Kd3J7MaWQ.html

Okay yes they stay with rock but I have yet to find any band that sounds like them. I've tried too. Probably why I'm stuck on them! They are my only source for Maid Crack!

Another nice analysis, well done again dude! If I recall correctly this may bring you to the end of your suggestion list, so here is another: DICE. Also, I think I may have recommended Kiyoshi before. She's a kick arse bassist who plays regularly with Marty Friedman and has her own 2 piece band. Well worth checking for killer lead bass riffs. I recommend Hero or the live recording of Whole New World. Can't go wrong with either. 😊

Great review. No matter how many times I hear a B-M song, there's always something new. I never noticed that laser gun sound until you pointed it out. Regarding the sound of the drums being too hot and how it might be a mistake... I think your first opinion is right and that it's an aesthetic choice. I heard the song live in real-time, and this video has been remixed so it doesn't quite match the real-time version. I think I remember the snare being loud and the bass drums being too low. So I think they wanted to perfect that edgy sound for the video. They do love to distort things.

Thumbs up! I like your Band-Maid videos very much because I want to learn more about their music and techniques. Good analysts like you can almost be counted on one hand. Unfortunately your videos have a lot of thumbs down. I know why but I don't understand it. You do it exactly right, please keep it up! And for the people who do not like that the videos are often paused I have a recommendation. There are more than 3500 Band-Maid "reaction" videos on KZfaq. Look for the 5 and a half minute videos for a 4 minute song. That's where you're best off!

Akane uses a Roland TM-1 sampler, she usually uses it to torment Miku during the audience interaction segments by playing distracting samples. It gets used in a variety places. If you do a KZfaq search for Akane Roland TM-1 she has a video explaining how she uses it.

Very informative!! I love all the effort you put in one video. What I have learned from your lesson is that the key changes from A minor to Bb major( or G minor) into the chorus....and somehow it works.... I believe Kanami has theory backgrounds, but sometimes she doesn't care the F about it. I really didn't like the VII5 dyad used (mostly) in rock or punk, but who cares now? Doesn't matter if it sounds good.

The reason you can't see the subtitles is the bottom of the screen is cut off. When you pause, the controls appear on the bottom and the subtitles are pushed higher to where you can see them.

It seems that every time you stop the video you turn on the subtitles and then turn them off when you resume. Try clicking inside the video window, it should fix it. I don't think the subtitles are necessary for the type of breakdown you are doing. It's difficult enough as it is.
