why is it that we fill the shadow shapes first before refining curves etc, isnt that going to lead to inaccuracy since its really difficult to erase it

if im doing this using graphite pencils, what grade would u recommend for the darkest areas, 2b, 4b?

I would go with 2B, but in the end it´s your preference I guess :)

I'm using 4 B on the darkest areas and am noticing that the pencil needs to be needle sharp and resanded to a needle point often to get the darkest values and get into all the little areas of tooth in the paper.

I see that at your really dark areas there is a lot of "charcoal excess" as one friend of mine uses to say. I copied the plate according to your tutorials but this friend insists that the right way to do it is taking with a soft brush the excess of charcoal out of the dark area. I'd like to know your opinion on this practice of his. Thank you for this awesome iniciative with your students and here on KZfaq.

Ideally, you are trying to match the values that you observe in the original to the values on your copy. Often, students over-exaggerate the dark shadow and it needs to be lightened in order to match the value of the original - brushing back the drawing will lighten the overall value. There are varying opinions on the technique to achieve this, but the final visual effect of matching your drawing to the original should be the primary objective. The advantage of using a brush it that it helps to unify the value into one flat value shape, but the darkness still need to match the original. If you take too much charcoal away, the value will be too light and you will need to add more in to match the value of the original. I hope this helps to answer your question.
