I see many complaint about the sword fight, but to be fair, it's a good fight for the time. No fancy trick or epic jump, just two dude struggling to pass eachother defense (I know they aim for the shield in the coregraphy), which is more realistic than most of the sword fight portrayed in the cinema.

It is different here since Domitian the roman emperor did not go on field instead he sent his general Severus to fight Decebalus the king of Dacia, so there are no equal ranks here and before this battle the roman expansion reached the dacia border and all negociations were lost as romans sought to subdue Dacia for the rich gold that was to pay for their quest in expansionism.

It's funny and sad that when they made this movie like many at this time they had no understanding of Roman tactics or army maneuvers. The Roman army would never be scattered all over the place but in a tight group, the front line would fight a couple of minuets then switch to rear so no man would wear out, this style helped conquer the Empire. You see it in Rome the T.V series in battling the Gauls.

Trajan's Column (Italian: Colonna Traiana, Latin: Columna Traiani) is a Roman triumphal column in Rome, Italy, that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It is located in Trajan's Forum, north of the Roman Forum. Completed in AD 113, the freestanding column is most famous for its spiral bas relief, which depicts the wars between the Romans and Dacians (101-102 and 105-106). John Smith-it might come a surprise to you but Roman army actually had very long tradition of personal duels and duels of the champions.Also-that short sword you had on mind was in fact designed and effective as both slashing and stabbing weapon(not only as stabbing weapon as it is often erroneously propagated.That misinterpretation have its origin in fact that it was primarily used for stabbing but not only for stabbing ).On the other hand the way how they fought each other hardly looks how they would fight in reality.
@JohnSmith-zv8km
@JohnSmith-zv8km 6 жыл бұрын
I have read a lot of books on the Roman period and have not come across any examples of military duels being fought perhaps you could suggest a book. As for the Gladius, it could be used for chopping as well as thrusting but it was short and not designed for duels such as this and as we see in the fight the longer sword won the day.
@paprskomet
@paprskomet 6 жыл бұрын
None of those two would fight like this.If this happened in reality both would rather fought in a style similar to Gladiators and fought from behind shield protection not waving with their swords like children playing on soldiers while constantly exposing their vital areas to opponent.In this film they are holding their shields in really ridiculous way like if ignoring them. As for "gladius-most people use that generic latin word which simply means "a sword"(any sword regardless shape,lenght of blade or type) as if it was typological term for specific line of short swords but it was not typological term,at least not for the romans.for them it was just basic word for(any)sword.Talking about is as about " short" aword is also misleading.Hispanic swords existed in many types and although shortest of them(modernly ranked as Pompeii type) had blades ranging from 42 to 55 cm people are often surprised discovering that they imagined it shorter when they had opportunity to see Hispanic swords with their own eyes and holding it in their own hands.This is especially the case for earliest type(modernly called as "Gladius Hispaniensis") which was dominant type for example in the army of Julius Caesar.People are often shocked that its not that short how they imagined and ocassionaly confuse it with Spatha type swords(and Gladius Hispaniensis indeed had blade lenght fully comparable with swords otherwise ranked to Spathae family). As for duels-there is no book about this but you can obviously find examples in many ancient writters across centuries or you can also read this article which directly focus on it(link provided).Story of Titus Manlius Torquatus dueling celtic chieftain was among the most famous in the Roman army.Even Marcus Antonius invited Octavian to personal duel and much later Emperor gallienus one of his enemies. www.academia.edu/31861663/Champions_and_Tradition_Single_Combat_in_the_Age_of_Belisarius At this 2nd article search for subtitle "Duelists": www.academia.edu/31905371/Brave_Deeds_Heroes_of_the_Roman_Army

They like to pretend both sides had more honor than either side did, back in this era of cinema. More idealized and glorified narratives, but more realistic battles (in that they literally had actual giant armies of guys line up on hills, rather than having completely fake CGI models for everything). I do not like the trend towards further and further CGI usage for things that there's literally no reason to use CGI for. CGI may be getting less expensive, but it isn't about cost for studios that can afford to spend a quarter billion dollars on 1-3 movies. It's about proving how great their skills at CGI are, at the expense of artistic integrity. The most annoying part is that almost no one in the audience gives a shit. They think we watch movies and meticulously rate the development of CGI movie by movie. We don't. Movie critics might, but who gives a shit? Well, studios do. Not the director, not the graphics department, not the actors, the executives. They're the ONLY ones who care about that dumbass type of competition. Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings was visually FAR better made than the Hobbit, despite the IMMENSE improvement in CGI between the two trilogies. You know why? Because Peter Jackson used CGI to fill in the gaps in things that can't be made by practical effects, but the Hobbit used CGI like it was the very air we breathe. It's sad. Because if Studios would stop caring about prestige, instead of actually making good movies that can leave a lasting cultural impact, instead of acting like parading black characters on screen = "Weesa not racist". And, both CGI AND Practical effects have come a long way. If they'd figure out how to combine them as well as possible, instead of just phoning everything in using green screens, which causes the actors to give less enthusiastic performances, maybe people wouldn't be avoiding the Cinemas, since- why bother go see a movie at a physical theater, when the whole thing was produced digitally?

Romans did not wear pants. They didn't need it in Rome where there was a warm Mediterranean climate. They wore a tunic up to the knees. Look at all the ancient Roman statues and Trajan's column. The Dacians wore pants because it is cold in the Carpathian mountains. Only in American movies like Gladiator do Romanians wear pants, which is a big historical mistake. The Celts had an eagle on their helmet. The Dacians had connections with the Celts.

The movie its great exepct for the figthing scences they seem like there dancing and also the Romans used formations but I guess they just take out the formations from the movies to make it more entertaining so its okay but still the fighting scences are horrible
