I love everything in this scene. Hordes of extras, real siege towers and walls. Working scorpions and fake armors of good quality. And how Romans are shown as well trained, by theyr silly acrobacy and fencing skills, while also showing how formidable theyr enemies were! Oh! Old movies were so great!

Hi, I'm from Romania, this movie was made here in the 60's...don't take it too seriously, the budget was small compared to american stuff, it's a great accomplishment even organising so many extras. It's a good theater style movie because romanian cinema had it's roots in theater mostly so actors were very exagerated in their movements and stuff. You can still enjoy it for what it is! that is all

@@danangarifwidodo yes but over the years of course mixed with other people who came in these lands, in 2000 years many things happened :) the truth is not known and there are many theories, some say they all died and some say it's still the main root of romanian people and culture, the truth is always somewhere in the middle! I consider myself half dacian because I live in the mountains and like to do the same things that they did especially freedom! now it's not the roman empire that we need to fight, it's other big powers who want to tell us what to do and make us their colony, one thing is for certain, their rules don't apply in my carpathian mountains! ;) have a good one my friend!

On one hand this is an incredible spectacle. The sheer numbers of extras and the set, walls, siege towers...it's amazing. And this is only one battle depicted out of the entire epic film. On the other hand, ancient warfare never looked so... flimsy. The weapons and armor are consistent with old sword/sandals movies. But that's a minor gripe. Couldn't they at least show the Romans operating in some sort of trained or tactical manner - they march in step and stand in formation. How about units moving tightly in testudo or fighting together (lol @ 6:49 - wtf)

If only the Romans and Dacians knew more devastating wars would commence fourteen years later leading to the incorporation of Dacia into the Roman empire. This war at the time of unpopular emperor Domitian would end ostensibly as a victory for Rome since the Dacian king sued for peace. The Dacians by 87 AD where this takes place were considered to be the next most civilized peoples in Europe after Rome because they were able to copy roman weapons and tactics and develop them very quickly, The Dacians also unlike most Barbarians built Stone and Marble walls surrounding several of their cities and by the time Marcus Aurelius became Roman Emperor in 161 AD they were the Roman Empires biggest threat consistently in Europe but he did end up beating most of the Dacian tribes & subjugating them within his lifetime.

This movie was made before your parents were even born. Before those historians you are talking about were even born. The movie had a small budget and did incredibly well for the time period, more realistic than other movies about the Roman empire that were to come in the following decates.

@@jagged29 - my father was born two years earlier - most of today top level experts were born around that time or before, but there were serious historians working for decades before this movie -it's a movie about local resistance against much more powerful foreign enemy, which was made in communist country... I very much doubt the movie had small budget (the fact that all these extras are Romanian soldiers shows that there was political support for the movie). And even if the budged was smaller, Dacians not using falces and Romans jumping into fight like some ninjas, these are purely artistic choices that have little to do with overall budget.

@@toncek9981 the movie may have been backed by the government, but it is the same government who could not feed it's people properly, and would not spend money into anything other than the infrastructure, the multiple factory driven industries and building things which were useless to the mass. The Romans did NOT besiege a fortified city like that! That was a mindless attack, almost bereft of the heavy weaponry the Romans would have used to batter the city walls, create access points and reduce the defenders before an assault went in. Engineering was a key component in warfare that gave Romans the edge and they were very adept and practiced at besieging and taking fortified positions. It was their version of the artillery used today, long range heavy bombardment before the infantry went in. And what was the point in sending in cavalry to operate in the city, in confined spaces and narrow streets? Cavalry would have been more useful outside, protecting the flanks, recon and supply protection plus cutting down anyone seeking to flee. The Romans didn't fight fair, man v man, they fought to win decisively and with no mercy. They used every trick in the book, they took their time, used starvation, were very well equipped and supplied, and were remorseless. They fought a lot and got good at it. Another movie that uses fictional notions instead of reality, a bit like the stupid Westerns where the big mass of mindless Indians galloped around a fort to be cut down by repeating rifles. Comical!
