Beatles Revolver Remix is coming so the original is now unlistenable trash?

The new cash grab from Giles Martin is coming and suddenly the opinions of the original mix are quite harsh. This proves that an echo chamber can be large enough for a bandwagon. Ridiculous. Also, why can you never just get the demos and outtakes? So many configurations, but you ALWAYS have to buy the remix.

I do think the Beatles stereo mixes (up until at least Magical Mystery Tour) were basically afterthoughts. Most people in England at that time listened on AM radio or monophonic Dansette record players, and the focus was placed on the mono mixes accordingly. That said, most bands of this era have both Mono and Stereo versions of their albums readily available both in stores and on streaming services. The Beatles however have only made their mono albums available as limited edition box sets. So I think this narrative about how bad the stereo mixes are has less to do about what is best for the art or what the band intended and more about selling product, be it new remixes or limited edition box sets.

I personally like the vocals spread around in that pan style. A different album, but the song “What Goes On” on Rubber Soul is so much better in the straight stereo than the mono. I’ve always enjoyed how Ringo sings on one side and the backup vocals are on the other. It sounds so cool when they meet in the middle of the room. It kinda feels more like they’re in the room to my ears.

"The stereo mix is so sloppy and rushed, it sounds like it was done on someone's tea break" - Andrew of Parlogram auctions. If one decides to pull a name out of their ass, it might be worth sharing their actual opinion. I'm unoffended by the OG stereo because i love the album, but there's no denying it's not a great mix. It doesn't take fancy "skullcandy" headphones to hear the massive difference in the sound quality of the new remix. Just a/b the 2009 vs the new one on Spotify. It sounds like he pulled the individual instruments out of the mud and decompressed everything. I'm pretty excited for this release, especially for the new mono cut and the discarded original artwork. I bought a bunch of the other remixes too, and they all have their merits and drawbacks. When it comes down to brass tax though, the original monos are better than the stereos in almost every instance.

Just recently found your channel, and even though I don't completely agree on everything (it would be a very boring world if we all did) I enjoy your insights and and reasons for them, even if it doesn't match mine. I definitely agree with your point of the cash grab aspect, but it's The Beatles, so I don't mind it... LOL. I am probably one of the few people that actually enjoy the original stereo mixes and the updated mixes as well... some songs work better in one or the other depending on my personal preference, but I enjoy having the ability to listen to either and have a different experience. For the same reason I also dig listening to mono versions as well... in the case of the song Taxman, I always preferred how much more power and oomph the mono mix had compared to the stereo mix. The remixed stereo version I feel does a really great job of bringing that punchy sound to a stereo mix... the mono version is still the best though. One last note, I saw in another of your videos about love for Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, and I have always loved that song as well, but literally was blown away by the new remixed version of it. I look forward to checking out more of your videos. Cheers!

The thing is you can always listen to the original mixes. They're there. These remixes are just a reinterpretation of the albums. Also, the Mono mix of Revolver was the one the Beatles approved and really worked on at the time. But I get your point and I totally agree with the fact the original work will always be the original. Really like your honesty and experience. I personally, appreciate a lot of mono records because, they were advanced in their mic setups and recording methods in the late 50 s and early 60 s. Stereo was “ new technology” in the late 60s and most early stereo vinyl was crap, compared to mono LPs - in my opinion. Thumbs up to you, Robert. The “old days” were not the worst in our culture. Many movie theaters channeled their sound the way mono music recorded - because every part of the room was filled with all the dialog and sound effects for all the audience seats. Good example of mono: Masterpieces by Ellington, circa 1953- highly regarded for room filling sound by an orchestra. ( Michael Fremer). Thanks much👍

Great video. Sharp arguments, well articulated. The analogy with colourised films is a good one. 👍 The difference when it comes to films is that current HD restoration really does rescue deteriorating film stock. The 'leave well alone' argument should be more or less reserved for records. Otherwise, I have no problem with remixes per se. They can add another flavour, but yes, this tendency to see original mixes as therefore null and void is dumb.

There was a huge argument about Da Vinci's Last Supper. Some people wanted to restore it. Other people wanted it left alone to disappear forever. The restorers won the argument. It was fully restored in 1999. Da Vinci himself had to repaint it several times. It suffered some damage during WWII. It was even chopped down to make room for a door leading from the kitchen to the cafeteria where the monks ate. Which is kind of ironic when you think about it. The room it was in was even used as a stable for horses at one time. Can you imagine horses being able to look around at the room they were in and seeing one of the most famous paintings in the world. One man's art is another man's horse stable. I agree with what you said about film restoration. Some of those old films would have just disappeared. Like Rear Window. And there is a difference between restoration and colorization. I do enjoy watching a few colorized black and white movies. Actually just two. Miracle on 34th. Street, and A Night To Remember. Sometimes movies should have been in color. Sometimes the film makers were forced to use black and white due to Edison's monopoly on the film industry. Yet some films slipped through such as Robin Hood (1938). And color film was around almost since the very beginning of film. Europe had color film in the silent era. Edison's monopoly stopped at the water's edge. However none of this applies to any Beatles album... I've come to rescue you. I don't need rescuing. Yes you do. You're a mess. No I'm not. Let me rescue you. I'm fine right here. Nope you're coming with me. Where are we going? Camelot. I don't want to go to Camelot. It's a silly place.

I just A B'd the 2022 Tax Man vs The Original. Since nobody was around to stop him Paul bumped the bass quite a bit. The guitars have been moved to overlap in the center rather than one left, one right. The old recording has more empty space and sounds cleaner, the new one has more ambient noise and I guess you could say it's warmer. Vocals sounds just about the same. They both sound great. I think I prefer the original because the isolated lead guitar in the right channel seems to offer a lot more detail and sounds more agressive and edgy.. But that could vary depending on gear.

I was happy to get the outtakes, demos, home recordings, whatever from the Blondie box set without having to buy all of the remasters. That was a very rare deal since you usually can only get that stuff like you were mentioning when you buy the Super Duper Uber Deluxe Edition. You have to buy the remix or the remaster or something that makes it "different" haha. I do have to admit though I was confused by one thing on that box set. It says that it's remastered. I don't think it was ever released before so wouldn't that just make it mastered instead of remastered? I couldn't afford to get the remastered studio LPs so I was pushing it spending $140 to get the five special LPs 👍 BTW, the very first thing I heard about The Beatles Revolver after it was announced was how horribly the original was mixed and made. It's funny how it's been the greatest thing since sliced bread until the time comes when they do a remix. I mentioned In an earlier reply a while back how I bought the Pink Floyd A Momentary Lapse of Reason earlier this year or last year not realizing it was a remix. It was horrible and I wish I could have returned it. I think it should have been called A Monetary Lapse in Reason. I don't have Pink Floyd Animals on LP right now. And I am getting the remix on Friday supposedly. And I have to admit, I hope I haven't been fooled again. I listened a little too much to how terrible the original mix was and I guess I wasn't thinking about all these other examples of similar topics. I hope your video wasn't a fateful coincidence message to me saying you dummy, you did it again 😁 I guess I'll know soon enough. But then maybe I won't since I don't have the original in this case? 99% of the time I think the originals are the best when it comes to the mixes. If nothing else, it's definitely what we know and what we enjoyed growing up. There are times when there are exceptions I'm sure. I'm trying to think of one right now but I'm coming up blank. When I hear something from the past, I don't want it to sound different other than maybe remastered and a little better. I don't want to hear sounds that I didn't hear before, and they claim were there all along but you just couldn't hear them, because I want it to sound as good as it can but not like it was another outtake. I don't really have problems with the various money grabs but at the same time I do have problems with people trashing the originals just because they spent X amount of dollars on the remix version. I bet you half the time they've never even owned the original??? 🤔

@@RobertFithen Oh yeah, I hear you. The remixes have not been too exciting to me on anything lately for sure. The Blondie 5 disc outtakes and demos type material is wonderful sounding. And it is quality. I didn't have one pop or click throughout all 5 LPs either. And that does make sense what you said regarding the remastered 5 disc material and I hadn't really thought about it like that. So thanks for that info and insight. I almost didn't get it because of the price but it really wasn't too bad considering you get 5 LPs. A little more than I think it should cost of course but not exorbitantly expensive. Kind of reminds me of the video you put up earlier today haha. If we pay it, they will charge it! Now the 10 LPs of the remasters that were studio releases, around $450 plus tax, that's a little above my pay grade (or spending capability for one item or 10 items) right now. But I would love to have it! By the time you pay the tax, and in some cases shipping, you're easily looking at $500 which would make it about $50 an album. I'll stay with my older originals I do have and a few remasters of Blondie that do sound really great :-) I'm kind of hoping this day eventually start selling these 10 remastered albums individually and there's a few I would like to get. But I don't really need, or even want, all of them that bad.

For some reason You Tube isn’t letting me edit anymore what I write. But, Analog Planet (link below) love the new mix of Revolver and say it comes in a close second place only to the original mono mix The Beatles focused on… We should celebrate this guys, not bash it. The new stereo mix focuses heavily on the mono mix, fixes bad edits (only a few), hard panning, and brings out the sound effects that are on the original tapes, but we’re phased out or difficult to detect. Nobody is adding effects that weren’t on the original tapes like George Lucas (Star Wars). So, relax and let’s celebrate this as an added addition to the Beatles Catalog. Isn’t it nice to finally fully hear Ringo’s drumming among other goodies. And nobody is saying the original stereo mix is garbage, just different… We will always have the original stereo/mono mixes. And of course I will always cherish the original mono mixes as I want to hear what the Beatles intended….. The Beatles in mono blows me away on albums like Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt Pepper, etc. I finally understood their impact after listening to these albums in mono when the 2009 mono remasters came out. But, it’s nice to have all the options. Nobody is getting hurt here and The Beatles legacy only gets enhanced. Enjoy! Definitely a cash grab, it's what The Beatles do! Having said that what is wrong with refreshing these mixes? We know the stereo mixes at the time were an after thought and that all the care was put into the mono. Yes, the Eleanor Rigby pan has a certain charm. To create a mix that while being stereo brings us closer to the mono balanced sound and therefor closer to what The Beatles cared about makes absolute sense. Very interesting you note all those albums where even in the 60s they managed a good mix is interesting. With The Beatles being so ahead of their time it seems strange that their stereo is more pants than it needed to be. Love the channel, you're a natural

Thank you so much for speaking the truth about this cash grab! It was incredibly refreshing to find someone reminding us that this record was ALWAYS incredible, and isn’t now just finally listenable because of Giles’ slight efforts! I found this comment tonight on a YT “audiophile” channel’s video about the new release: “Not a Beatles fan, never have been. However, the Revolver 2022 remaster and remix sounds incredible. I bought the 96/24 Super Deluxe, and the 2022 Mix is extraordinary. Played straight through, then played the 2009 remaster, and the 2009 sounds like the Beatles always did to me - flat, uninspiring, drab - whereas the 2022 version is engaging, clear, precise, and - to my mind - how a band would want their album to sound.” I replied: “Im sorry, but I think you’ve got a bit of “new and expensive must be infinitely better” bias going on. I’ve got pressings of “Revolver” going back to the original mono release, and it’s always been an exceptionally great sounding record, given the time period and incredible impact this record had on music afterwards. This new remix is kind of interesting, but I don’t think it was substantially closer to what John hoped for than the original mono mix. He didn’t even have a clear idea of what a Beatles stereo album should sound like at this point, as stereo mixes were a fairly new, specialized field. John was always publicly critical of their work. I think it helped him fill insecurities about their albums - he was very insecure about the sound of his own singing voice, for example, and he also knew that you can always mix a record “better” than the final mix. The 2009 remaster has never meant more to me than any other, and I don’t think its fair to hold it as some gold standard that is only improved upon by this new remix. You spent good money on the 96/24 Super Deluxe, so you were expecting/biased to hear something full and amazing, which you did. However, it was always an amazing record. You just realized it now because Giles bumped the EQ a little bit for you. To describe all of their albums, especially post-Revolver albums, as “flat, uninspiring, drab” sounding is ludicrous considering the time period and intent of the music. Maybe you’ve only listened to bad digital versions, or just wanted to be a last holdout of admitting The Beatles were amazing, I don’t know. The reality is, most of us Beatles audiophiles appreciate this new remix as interesting, generally enjoyable, slightly enlightening at some points, with many reviews being very mixed, in between. For me, I enjoy certain aspects of the stereo mixing here as a bit better balanced than previous stereo mixes, and there are some things that are nice to hear a tiny bit more clearly, but I’m also not crazy about Paul’s obvious input on certain songs (particularly the bass levels on a couple of tracks). It’s a mixed bag, but definitely not a gigantic improvement on a horrendous turd, as you seem to imply. You finally have your excuse to be a Beatles fan. Go, embrace it!!”

The Mono mix was approved by the Beatles, the restrictions of the 4 track "bounced" master just left George Martin to pan left and right what was on each track which can sound odd, at least we can hear a truer Stereo mix with very clever technology and definitely sounds better but the mono mix should be the "go to" as this what the Beatles heard and approved

I like just about everything Giles has done, but I still listen to the originals 95% of the time. Cash grab or not, at least it helps keep the Beatles relevant in this day in age. Anyway, with this new remix, if the new deluxe vinyl set does indeed include a AAA analog copy of Revolver, then that alone is worth the price of admission! ;) Not that I need another mono copy.. I have the 2014 and a beautiful UK, early 2-box EMI stereo pressing that suits me just fine, but I'm still getting this new set after it's released, whenever I find a killer deal on it.. Right now it's too damn expensive. I still need one of those mid 70's German "super bass" pressings! Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, in this case, The Beatles always prefer a mono sound to their albums becuase that's just what it is at the time (at least until Abbey Road?), then the records were put into a stereo mixes without a band's supervision, so the band had nothing to do with how the stereo mix of the album will sounds like

I get what you mean BUT The Beatles and George Martin had little to no interest in the Stereo mixes for Revolver. All the time and trouble went into Mono. In the UK the average teenager in 1966 would only have a one speaker record player and so Stereo would be pointless. Unlike the US studio's which the Rolling Stones and other bands enjoyed using, The Beatles stuck mostly to Abbey Road using an outdated 4 track system and so until 1968 stereo was very hard to do well. I do get your point but nothing is wrong with the Mono but the Stereo mix can and hopefully will, be improved. Great video.

"Hey lets make everything sound like its coming down a corridor." 😂 That one got me. Yeah, I am not a fan of remixes for the most part. Mainly for one reason: *Sam Kinison voice* "YOU GUYS F THEM UUUUUP!! HELLOOO! STOP F'ING WITH THE BEATLES YOU TWAAAATS!!" Seriously though. I cant think of one single Beatles remix that improves upon the original. Not one. And the Peppers is horrid. It just is. I could go through every reason why, but then Id be the audiophile twat. The only single remix out of probably 25-30 Ive listened to that actually improves things is the Steven Wilson Chicago 2 remix. And that is because Wilson stays in his lane. He took a pretty terrible stereo mix and actually did subtle moves that improved the clarity, cohesiveness and general balance of the instruments. Notice I said IMPROVED not dicked around with to modernize, make cutesy moves and overall change the artistic intent. And I think that is why these remixes usually fail for me: Giles tries to "remagine" the Beatles instead of simply remixing in order to improve upon. Subtlety is not his forte. And executing the remagining is even worse than the actual idea. Revolver in stereo was never a great sounding stereo mix for me in comparison to the mono (notice I didnt say unlistenable, just that the mono is a more cohesive band sound IMO). So yeah, I would have liked a reasonably subtley done remix to bring things in a bit and place instruments in the mix in a less funky spread out way. But that is individual taste mainly. Not a "that og stereo sounds like crap" stance. All the guy had to do was to take the original and demix it enough to not screw up certain elements with the demixing process. (a process btw that he said wasnt ready but now all the sudden it is..err yeah 💸💸💸💸..its ready alright. Ready to empty your wallet) Again, wont go through each thing that got f'd up by the demixing process with Revolver (and we have only heard Taxman, can you imagine how many artifacts will be on TNK's?) Do the process in a way that doesnt f up other instruments, bring the stereo image in a bit tighter and wah-lah..a better sounding stereo mix. Or at least one that isnt ladden with Georges vocal sounding like Paul turned his mic down, the guitar solo sounding like it has a whammy bar, phasey assed cymbals etc etc. that mishandling the demixing process has caused. And dont tell me this new Taxman breaths better than the old stereo, it does not. Sounds claustrophobic in comparison. Someone get the Beatles out of that gawdamned tuna can Yellow Submarine! One again, so far, the dude has dicked around too much with trickery in order to "reimagine" the album and has improved *Chris Farley voice* "JACK SQUAT!" Giles hasnt "fixed" anything. He has added problematic issues. And not for the better. And yeah, stop selling the youth short! I wasnt yelling in agony when I heard the originals in the early 80's. I doubt kids are now pulling there earphones out by their wires. "Giles, what's it like to make your entire living of of convincing the world that your father was incompetent?" *Fithen mic drop* BOOM! 😂love it.

But it just isn't logical to think , especially with a major label and a big artist, that they would be satisfied with a mediocre recording, that could be easily improved decades removed from the original event. and that thought doesn't even address that record companies are not in business to make crap records. they might screw up on the music, but they do know how to make recordings, for the most part.

Robert, the new Revolver Stereo Mix sounds amazing! That being said since you’re a purist you now have the Original Mono Mix on this box set which also sounds fantastic! After all, the Beatles Mixed the Mono Mix so we should be listening to that. These have always been Mono records from Sgt. Pepper to Revolver. What a difference and they truly are masterpieces in Mono. Listen to the Mono Mixes as the Beatles intended! It’s a wonderful thing! I didn’t understand all the fuss/hype over Sgt. Pepper or Revolver until the 2009 Mono Remasters came out and I heard a properly mixed masterpiece. I started to get it. I think that’s why the New Stereo Mixes are that important for new generations. A lot of younger kids won’t have the patience/understanding for the hard panning, bad edits (only a few), and missing sound effects (only a little). The Beatles music deserves this treatment especially for the new generations. I love that Giles is following the Mono Mixes. You will always have your original stereo mix which you grew up on and are fond of. Nobody is taking that away from you…

Robert, your video inspired me to listen to my Revolver pressing, which I have not played in a few years. My pressing has white hot sound quality on side 2 (the important side, in my opinion). My side 1 sounds ordinary. As amazing as my side 2 sounds, there are sections that irk me a bit, due to the studio gimmickry that took place, even on my 1966 EMI Parlophone pressing. For example, in the songs featuring John's voice, they have him coming out of both speakers, as if he is standing in two places at the same time. As an effect, it is all well and good. But the song should be about the artists, and not about the post processing prowess of the recording engineers. I want to hear the band, and not the studio gear. In "Got To Get You Into My Life", studio enhancements were made on Paul's voice for nearly the entire song. At the end, Paul's voice sounded natural. I wish they left his voice sounding natural for the entire song. Lastly (and this goes for virtually every album from every band), Ringo's drums have the gain too low, and the singer's voice's gain too loud. When you want to play it loud, and feel the drums, you can't, because the vocals will kill your ears when played that loud. Consider Abbey Road's "The End", where Ringo does his drum solo. You can blast that section to the moon, and feel the slam of his drums. But not during the rest of the song. My side 2 of Revolver's stamper code is: YEX 606 - 4

My understanding is this: these new mixes are mainly motivated by British Copyright laws - a recording becomes public domain 50 years after release. The way around it is to do a remaster or remix which essentially makes this a "new" release and extends the copyright on the title. This way the copyright holder can keep extending copyright control and royalties. I could be totally wrong. It's worth further investigation although the laws I have so far read are so full of "legal speak" and confusing (by design).

I’ve listened to the Taxman remix back and forth with the original mix and the thing that ruins it for me is that the tambourine is still panned completely to the right so it doesn’t entirely fix the issue of everything being hard panned. If anything it’s more noticeable since it’s the only thing hard panned in the new remix. I’ll probably eventually buy the super deluxe box set after a few months as a price drop in inevitable just so I can have all the outtakes. I still haven’t picked up any version of the Let it Be remix. I don’t mind that they do these remixes if it gives them an excuse to release more studio outtakes. I just listen to my rips of my mono CDs when I wanna listen to the Beatles on the go. It will be interesting to see how the new mono lp sounds next to the 2014 release. People online have said it’s the worse sounding album in the whole 2014 set but I haven’t gotten around to listening to mine so I don’t really have my own take on it.

The only unlistenable revolver to me is the capitol one 😂😂. I was also unaware til just recently that there is a French pressing that completely cuts out the taxman intro, which to me is just blasphemy. Just for that alone I’m calling that one unlistenable too. 😂

The next thing they’ll colorize is the Revolver front cover and back photo! This album has been voted the greatest Rock album of all time many times! But the stereo version always sucked! Even the engineers have said many times that they would mix the stereo versions in an hour or two, yet spent days on the mono! They haven’t remixed the stereo earlier because the tapes available were premixed along the way, but NOT like they did it with Pepper! Well except for Tomorrow Never Knows that is! But no, the original stereo is fine when played on speakers! But we do need a good stereo mix for headphones! Now, about that leaning tower! I have a few ideas, Robert😉!!!

Re Sgt Pepper: did John Lennon recommend the mono over the stereo because they were involved in the mono mix, but not the stereo mix?

I grew up (56 years old now) with the Red Album. With the extreme stereo mixes. Did not hear the mono mixes until the Mono Box. Really like the Pepper remixes. Looking forward to the Revolver mixes. Does that mean I dislike the old mixes? Or do I need to dislike the new mixes in advance? I don't know. Need to hear the new mixes first...

Funny, I was listening to a Beatles podcast this morning talking about Revolver, and the guest talked about getting "ear fatigue" from listening to the original stereo mix in headphones. I've been listening to Revolver since the late '70s, and never once heard of anyone having to pour coffee in their ears because listening to Revolver or other '60s mixes was so exhausting. When did this term start appearing? Is it the audio version of restless leg syndrome?

It's an echo chamber. Someone put it out there and everyone's repeating it. First it was "technical limitations", with the earlier remixes. Then when that was debunked, it was all about "for the younger generation". Now it's "but headphones, though."

Hi Robert, thanks for taking the time to breathe some fucking sense into this world, at least you tried and your singularly stylish presentation always brightens the day. Watching the red mist rise and rise is inspirational and your commentary brings me to a place where my dog who was in the same room heard my unbridled laughter. I won’t afford you the old L followed by the beloved O and nor shall I round it off with an encore from L. I mean you give that to people who are trying to make you laugh audibly in the room but have fallen way short to make them feel better, right? I love how your humour and anger are mixed straight down the centre, you’re no laughter to the left and anger to the right like that George Martin guy almost certainly was. And speaking of him at least he did begat the world his only son to clean up his shit. So after enjoying your most excellent rant I thought I’d spin Revolver to remind myself of just how awful, artless and big bowl of wrongness it wasness. Sadly all I heard was revolution, a bunch of guys playing their part in delivering a piece of art so powerful that maybe, just maybe they could change society and make the world a happier place to be. 35 minutes of audio inspiration. And as I turn to the unsharing, skull candy wearing and ear budded baring bozo’s I day only one word and the word is “SPEAKERS”. Ever heard of them? Well they’re like cans but instead of wearing them you floor stand them, sit back and fill your room and the world with music the way it was mixed for you, through monitors which are SPEAKERS that are just called monitors by people who know what they’re doing with audio. Maybe treat yourself to a pair. Out of mine right now is coming the new “Blue Train” remaster with “Philly” Joe Jones on the right. Who? Well he’s like Ringo, he hits stuff. And he’s doing it right now on my right in the 2022 remaster. Remasters are good, it’s how you pull off the whole bring yesterdays art into todays technology thing while respecting the original artists and engineers. It’s kind of like restoring a Degas or a Rembrandt. Remixing is akin to deciding that Van Gough’s colour choices on “The Artists Chair” were clearly wrong so let’s break out the pink paint. And that “Mona Lisa” guy; did he forget the cat on her lap? Or wasn’t he very good with cats? Let’s stick a cat in there while we change her dress to satisfy modern vogue. Well I’m done, think I’ll remix Roberts video now, maybe I could make it dull and not so right on and put the vinyl to the right and the CD’s to the left ….. zzzzz

Thanks! Yes, such a revolutionary record, but people are saying The Beatles didn't care about stereo. I think they are referring to the earlier releases. So much experimentation going on here and the literal invention of the ADT process that' still used today.

I totally agree with Robert i forced myself to try and listen to the remix of pepper i could hardly recognise getting better it sounded so wrong couldnt stand listening to it it's like trying to rewrite history now with people trying to convince you that the first time you heard the red and blue album on cassette was the wrong listening experience as a child youll never forget the first time you heard the Beatles as 12 or 13 years old you never complained about the sound i have so many 60s records with lots of mistakes but you don't care that was part of the charm i love the voice in the left channel and the instruments in the right john lennon said the right way to listen to pepper was in mono. In my opinion they're trying to "clean" up their sound for modern ears which to me means "sterile" stripped of all the warmth and charm which i prefer cause what does it mean when they say modern ears is it for people whos been streaming for 20 years cause digital recording started around 1980 so people who like 60s and 70s music buy albums and people who prefer perfect sounding music in perfect stereo buy everything on cd from 1980 up till present cause digital recording with click tracks erased all the mistakes that was part of recorded music from from 1955 to 1979 with mostly "organic" approach and thats where my heart belongs but i have a lot of music post 1980 up till present day which i enjoy but mostly dance music cause it doesnt matter with the sound cause i just turn it out loud and jump around the room and im 54 now and i remember the very first time i heard "strawberry fields forever" it just sounded perfect on cassette and nothing can replace that moment ever and thats enough for me i dont need 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 anniversary deluxe edition of everything how much more from the same album do you need it's just squeezing the lemon to the max ,right !

Absolutely agree, those mistakes and oddities are crystalized as part of the charm and history of the song. "Strawberry Fields Forever" is a great example with the tape slowed at one point to match the key. I even noticed that as a kid and can't imagine the song another way. "Crimson & Clover" by Tommy James & The Shondells did something similar and they "fixed" it for the CD release. In the words of Ringo, "I AM the fu--ing click track!"
