I agree! I worked at Disney from '91 to '97, and we got to see all the animated features on opening night. Beauty and the Beast was the first of many, and the whole theater erupted in applause. But in all these years, I never knew there was a Director's Cut, or whatever they call it!

This is one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME. Like in my top 5 really. It's such an amazingly told story with a lot of foreshadowing, deeper meanings and just excellent. Also I would say Beauty and the Beast is probably the best remake that Disney had done. It's worth a watch.

Notice how literally every object in the castle used to be a human. Makes you wonder 1) How many servants did he have, 2) Did he own anything or was the castle empty, and 3) why have so many servants if you have so few things to use, clean, etc.

Saw this with my late wife in the theater on Thanksgiving Day when it came out. The ballroom scene was revolutionary at the time and utterly beautiful on the big screen. For any Disney movie, except “Cinderella, I recommend watching the original animated versions and ignore the live action remakes. Total waste of time. If you want a fun live action version of these, I recommend watching the TV series, “Once Upon A Time.” I also recommend “Chiit Chitty Bang Bang,” “The Sound of Music,” and Disney’s “Mary Poppins.”

Fun fact Dasha there was two Soviet fairytale adaptations of Beauty and the Beast and it's called the *Алый цветочек* (Scarlet Flower).
@stephanginther9051
@stephanginther9051 5 ай бұрын
So fun fact. In the original book. It was Beauty (her name wasn't Bell) that needed to learn a lesson, not Beast. In the book, the curse was completely malicious and undeserved. He wasn't cursed for being mean to an old lady, he was cursed for turning down her marriage proposal. Oh, and she was his former nanny. She got gross ideas when he hit his teens and didn't take rejection well. For those who want it, I'll summarize the original version below. So it begins with a prologue. An elderly fairy comes to the human realm, basically for a change of pace and for work. I mention she's old but I mean she's old _by fairy standards._ She gets a job at a castle, caring for the toddler age prince Adam. Meanwhile in a nearby kingdom, the king and queen have been assassinated and the killers are coming for the newborn baby princess. Another, young and pretty fairy spirits the baby away. While looking for a safe place for the baby, she finds a couple who's newborn baby died in her sleep. The fairy replaces the late child with the princess. Years later, puberty hits prince Adam like a truck. He's tall, good looking but, also kind, caring and noble in every sense of the word. His former nanny gets the hots for him and declares her love for him and asks him for his hand in marriage. He politely but firmly turns her down, and she does *not* take it well. She curses him. He turned into a sort of lizard man (not the lion man from the movie) and the curse would kill him after a certain amount of time, though she would remove it if he married her. Meanwhile, Beauty (her name was Beauty, not Bell) has grown into a beautiful and kind, but also vain and judgmental girl. Her father goes on a trip, just like in the movie though I don't remember the details. Now, the young fairy from the prologue approaches the prince, now a beast and informs him that powerful curses, like the one he's under have rules. For curses like that to work, they need a 'way out' clause, and she was able to figure out what that was for his curse. That way out can be complicated and difficult, but they do have to be _possible._ Here were the rules to break the curse. 1. He had to get a woman of royal birth to say she loved him and agree to marry him. 2. When physically in the girl's presence, he had to pretend to be mentally challenged. 3. He could not under any circumstance, tell her anything about his condition or the curse, or have anyone else do so for him. Unfortunately for Adam, there was *exactly one* eligible princess in the entire land, which was what the evil fairy hadn't counted on, believing there were none close enough. The good fairy manipulated Beauty's father into both coming to the castle and stealing. Then when he was imprisoned, she leads him into suggesting Beauty take his place in prison (yeah, lead to it or not, it was *his* idea...father of the year everybody!) I should mention that while basically kidnapping Beauty was the plan from the beginning, prince Adam was NOT okay with it. The fairy had to remind him that he would literally die if he didn't go through with it. So her father gets home and informs her that because he stole for her, he almost went to prison and now she has to so he won't have to. This was all her fault so that's fair. (again, more rewards for the best father ever!!) Beauty was scared, but unselfishly agreed. She's taken to the castle and to her surprise, rather than a dungeon, she's given a suit of rooms, a few magical doodads and some monkey butlers. She is then invited to dine with _the beast._ She is horrified and disgusted by him immediately and barely eats. He makes inane small talk (remember he has to pretend to be stupid) which she doesn't really respond to. At the end of the meal, he tells her he loves her and asks if she would say she loves him and agree to marry. Openly horrified she declares 'never' and the beast runs away sobbing. After that she heads back to her rooms and goes to sleep. Now, the good fairy found an interesting loophole in the rules on the curse. Specifically, that he had to act stupid in her presence. The rule said *physically* in her presence. The good fairy used her magic to allow prince Adam to enter Beauty's dreams as his real self. Similar to real life, they have a meal and chat. Beauty is immediately smitten with prince Adam, basically love at first site, then he speaks to her. Intelligent, understanding and interesting. At the end of the night, he tells her he loves her and asks that she say that she loves him and agrees to marry him. He uses word for word the phrasing he'd used previously. She agrees immediately and wakes up. Days pass and Beauty gradually realizes that the beast is not evil or cruel, but still denies him, if a bit more politely. Then she eagerly goes to sleep after, to meet her 'dream prince.' Both literally and figuratively the man of her dreams. Basically, Beauty is vain, not stupid. She eventually figures out that Beast and prince Adam are the same person and one day when he asks her as Beast, she tells him that she _does_ love him and would be thrilled to marry him. The curse is broken. I don't remember what happened to the evil fairy, but Beauty's true parentage is revealed and they marry. Bonus fact. The novel is *loosely* based on a true story. There was an arranged marriage between a European lord and lady. The man had that disease that's often called werewolf syndrome, where you grow hair basically everywhere. He was often called 'the beast' when he was out of earshot. The woman arranged to marry him basically griped loud and long to anyone who would listen. She hated that her husband would be someone like him. Only after they got married, she basically fell madly in love with him. She defended him viciously and did not tolerate anyone speaking ill of him.

This movie came out the year I was born. When I was little, I had a "Sing-a-long" VHS produced by Disney that featured a bunch of random singing scenes from different Disney movies. They would have the words at the bottom with a bouncing ball. One of the singing scenes they included was the first song from this movie. I think I had watched Beauty and the Beast before that, but I didn't own it. And I remember I badly wanted to get it and rewatch the movie again for years, but I don't think I ever did.

Gaston wanted to marry Belle because she is the most beautiful woman in town and like he said "She is the best and don't I deserve the best?". He is the most popular man in town and is consindered the best, so that's why he's so adamant to have Belle as his wife. Also, like in most countries are today, you could only marry one in the past (in his case circa late 18:th century to early 19:th century), so even if Gaston would consinder to marry The Bimbettes (as the blonde trio is called) he had to choose ONE of them.

Dasha Reacts: Thanks for reacting to this masterpiece. LOVE this movie SO much. Saw it originally at the movie theater when it was released, in 1991. I cried when it looked as if "The Beast" had died. Then had tears of joy at the happy ending. This was the FIRST, and actually the ONLY*, animated movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture on its OWN MERITS ( although it lost to 'The Silence of the Lambs,' which had come out earlier that same year. ) Unfortunately many of the voice cast members are no longer with us. Including: Jerry Orbach ( voice of "Lumière," ) who passed away in 2004; David Ogden Stiers ( voice of "Cogsworth," ) who died in 2018; and brilliant, veteran, British actress ( Dame ) Angela Lansbury ( voice of "Mrs. Potts," ) who passed away in 2022. *After 1991 there were a FEW animated films nominated for best picture, but only to round out the number of nominees needed. Later, a new catagory was added for Best Animated Film.

The voice of Mrs. Potts was Angela Lansbury, a legendary actress particularly with Disney. She starred in their much older film "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", worth a watch if you're in the right mood. She's (sadly?) most famous for her long-running TV show "Murder She Wrote", playing a mystery writer who solves murders everywhere she goes.

Basically, get a life and leave the beast alone when his only victim said to… I forgot about Gaston being a hunter. So from his perspective, this will be like getting rid of a bear. (Morally, I’m sure it means nothing to him, since everyone and everything is seen as a trophy or a way of getting one.)

Cover model Fabio, famous for his long flowing hair, used to be on a TV series called "Acapulco H.E.A.T." with Catherine Oxenberg. Once, when she had her little girl on the set with her, the child saw Fabio and, thinking he looked like the human version of the prince in "Beauty and the Beast," pointed to him shouting "Beast! Beast!" Fabio was initially upset because, being a big brawny guy, he thought the little girl was frightened of him when she called him a "beast," but Catherine explained to him that it was a reference to the Disney film.

Gaston's death was meant to be extended at first. He survived the fall, only to meet his end by the wolves. The creators thought it would have been too graphic to put in the movie. However, they used that idea in another movie down the line ( not gonna say which one as I think Dasha hasn't watched it yet).

Honestly I think that would have been perfect considering the wolves had been aggressive throughout the movie, and the audience would have cheered that they finally get prey that they could agree deserved to be attacked.

@@HumorousLOL Considering the track record of Disney having the majority of their villains meet a miserable end, that wouldn't be too far of what they'd go with. However, during Gaston's fall, when the camera zooms in on the eyes, you could see skulls and crossbones in them.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I always thought he looked better as the Beast than he did as a human :P

Hi Dasha, There is a live action version of this movie, but the animated version you just watched is the best, by far. Yup, it's a good one.

If you consider this your new favorite story, just wait until you see "The Little Mermaid" and then you might have a new favorite. Always enjoy your reactions.

when you lose everything or feel like you have like when he was turned into the beast it's not uncommon for people to become it fully. If I am to appear like a beast then I might as well be one being the thought. Many storys & real life examples show this some may call it even depression in the end it's all shows the evils of vanity & materialism...

Dasha using the word chick really made me laugh. Why doesn't he marry the three chicks? Ha Ha. . So refreshing and innocent picking up on American terms. Hellacruel also made me smile.

Another great reaction Dasha, I think you should react to The Elephant Man, it is a beautiful film directed by David Lynch a real tear jerker. I am really sure you'd love it.

Dasha should do Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Another darker and tearjerking Disney film.

Despite not really liking the Disney live action version, it’s hard for me not to mentally picture Luke Evans as Gaston any time I see the character these days. The whole sequence for "Tale As Old As Time" always hits me. Still my favorite animated Disney film, although Moana is close behind.

I feel the same way about most of the actors in _Watchmen._ Love the comic, the movie is worse; but the actors for Rorshach, Nite-owl, and Dr. Manhattan are _perfectly_ cast in both looks and personality and are basically the characters in my head when I re-read the comic.
