I love this, very, very much! Notice folks the plumb line there in red. It is to tell the bricklayer that what he's doing will end in a final result of a straight line build of brick until the mortar dries. Some guys out there after being in the bricklaying business for many years, can see the true results of being plumb just by eyesight, and don't really need a chaulk line. It's a beautiful trade and profession, being in the masonry industry.

@nousername21 you keep the bottom edge of the brick you are laying flush with the top edge of the lower bricks which have already been layed to the line and this is how the brick is kept level width wise (as the bricks are made square) hope this helps.

@benny5825 I should have mentioned it in the video benny, the wall is 102mm thick i.e. a half brick thick as apposed to a one brick thick wall which would be 215mm. This wall is built in stretcher bond, if it were built in Englishe bond or Flemish bond it would probably be one brick thick wall.

Hi Smithy, no it does not matter. Usually right handed people spread from the right and left handed from the left, this is more to do with buttering up the brick (putting on the cross joint) which is easier for right handed people when laying their bricks from the right and left handed people when laying their bricks from the left. Cheers

@stuarth43 If mixing by hand use 1 part cement, 5 parts building or soft sand and 1-2 parts lime. The lime will bind the sand together which will help the mortar hold onto the water. This will make it more workable. If using a mixer, add plasticizer which will aerate the mortar creating millions of minute air bubbles making the mortar very workable. If really stuck add a squirt of washing up liquid for increased workability (note: this might affect the strength of the mortar, negatively)

ye it amazes how many negative comments can come from people, its a simple step by step for beginners/diy.if he wanted he could spread it out his own way like he wud on site.comments like not standing right side of board if you can see its only one board centre to wall and camera placed so beginners can see, and no furrowing in USA:who cares you all top and tail cross joints on both block and brick anyway that would be more of a concern to me.

The old man who trained me 26 years ago (here in America) could spread the mortar perfectly over 5 bricks (40 inches) with one (1) trowel full of mortar, without touching the line, on a residential brick veneer (limited space behind the wall). Since then, I have worked with well over 100 different masons and None of them can spread mortar like that ; including myself (or his sons, for that matter). I didn't pay much attention to the details at the time; I wish I had b/c he's dead now.

I have been retired for about 8 years after a lifetime in the trade and believe me this is total crap. For a right handed bricklayer you stand sideways to the wall with the wall on your left, this is the correct way whether you are laying from the left or the right. You roll the morter and spread it on the wall, this normally would be enough to lay two and a half to three bricks. 4 simple actions with the trowel and you are ready to lay 3 bricks. This is another video by a 6 week expert who has never made his living laying bricks.

You must have spent a lifetime working on your own and in isolation George. A true journey man would have seen many different techniques and styles of working from their travels. I personally use a variety of techniques and this video shows one of them. In some countries they don't even roll the mortar. Very narrow minded view George. The kind of old backwards attitude that prevents progress.

This man shouldn't be teaching anyone. He has no idea how to roll the muck, pick it up, lay it, or spread it. Does he think that if he puts a white coat on it will give him some authority? If you want to see a proper bricklayer on You Tube look up Rob Songer.

@@anthonymclean9743 "People like me?" Not sure what you mean, but if you mean a bricklayer with forty years of experience, who did a full intentured apprenticeship and who has never compromised his standard, then no, people like me would never slag of Rob Songer. There is a right way and a wrong way to lay bricks, the man in the video is a charlatan and needed calling out. He is not a bricklayer and I stand by my comments.
