Before you do any expensive mistakes, please watch this video!
Every time I go on a ride with a group or to an event I see off road beginners struggling on their heavy adventure motorcycles and suffering things they wouldn't have to if only they had started off with a lighter bike.
It breaks my heart.
Please consider buying and older dual-sport (or a modern one, if you have the budget) for your off-road adventures! You will thank me later!
Unfortunately, big and heavy adventure bikes are not suited for off-road unless you really know what your are doing

I wish I had watched this back in march. I bought a cb500x because the salesman told me it was great bike for off road... and I believed him... First real day off road day I dropped it 4 times... dented the exhaust, broke the clutch lever, scratched the windshield and both engine covers. I now have a dr650. Feels like a feather... rides like a charm. Great vid. Subscribed.

Your sense of humour sets you apart from most other channels. As I read the comments of others who are enjoying and laughing with your videos i feel most of them will probably agree with me. Humour and practicality is a good (the best?) way to build up a following. All of this seems to be common sense, start small and make your way up to the heavyweights... @@OFFroadOFFcourse so I went off road for the first time yesterday. I had rolled the bars forward, fitted aluminium wr450 mx pegs and set up my suspension based on your directions in your other video (really good advice). Excelente vídeo and only the truth. I went along the rest of the sheep and so bought a 200kg bike, fitted knobby tires (because I know from MTB that road tires do not work OffRoad) and there I went to the dirt. Big mistake, falling confirmed that. I by the way, when some reviewers says ho the bike does not enough torque, please, the reality is that 99% of the time it has more than you can handle. Yes these are wonderful bikes, good mpg, good comfort for long distance, etc . But not good for beginners! Very good work, very good channel. Keep it up!!! Abraço de um concidadão.

Thanks for the content; awesome as usual! I took an adventure riding course on my T7 last year and I really learned a lot. The first thing I learned is my many years of motocross experience doesn't translate as much as I had hoped to off-road riding! Off-roading itself is a whole lot different than riding a groomed MX track! The second thing I learned is that picking up a 450 pound bike over and over gets old fast! Thank goodness the instructor was willing to help! To that end, I bought a KLX300 to practice my skills off-road. Even though it's still fat for a dirt bike (300 pounds) it's still a hell of a lot easier to pickup than a T7! The best part is, I don't actually have to pick it up as much!

I've been riding for a year or so ~7k kms. Luckily I have friends who dragged me straight into forest trails, proper river crossings and mud etc. So I learned quite fast or even immediately that weight is an issue :D Proper wrestling. But buying the first bike is hard anyways bcause you dont know what to expect and they look quite same on the picture. I must agree on the $$$ bike mental aspect. I guess I wouldnt drag myself into these kind of ditches with the new shiny 10k+ eur bike. Ive also been watching new T7s but in the end i try to calm myself down that i got plenty to learn with my old, broken fairings and cosmetically ugly Transalp. So if youre really into ADV and want to learn, do exactly whats on the video - buy old cheap and light bike. Would be so much easier from whatever corner you look. I wish my transalp would be lighter...
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for this awesome comment! I see you can relate to my "teachings" :D The biggest problem with the transalp (or the Africa Twin 750) nowadays is the fuel comsumption vs power. Its drinking almost as much as KTM990 with the power if a XT600. Not great :D The weight is a problem of course, but if you ride it knowing it was a cheap investment and all that, sometimes you just drop it instead of fighting the weight, and thats as good of a technique as any other :) The T7 is great, and a HUGE upgrade from the transalp, but in the end the weight is similar. have you tested one already?

Hello man! The T7 is a great bike...not the best to learn, but definitely not the best! Taking down tire pressure helps a lot (try 1.5BAR for instance), and as soon as you get a chance, change the front tire (at least the front tire). I test rided the T7 with the stock tires and didnt really like the offroad (and usually i am not picky about tires at all) :D thanks for watching and commenting!

Absolutely spot on, and hilarious as usual. now that I have more then a few off road trips under my belts, I start to believe that I should have bought a smaller bike... picking up 210 kilo at least once a week is not fun.. and the fear factor would be much less.. today I rode a crf 250 and it felt like a child bike. much more reassuring than my T7. But... Since This is my main ride to work & the fact that insurance prices are a murder where I live, (2800$ per year, not kidding) and you have to have one for each bike, only rich people can afford more than one bike..

What are you insuring? I am usually going for liability only, which is really just peanuts, here in Germany. Insuring a somewhat powerful bike against theft and my own mistakes would break my neck too, starting out at about a quarter or fifth of a new bike's value.

Right on! Have you seen my CRF250L review? I criticize the bike's lack of power cause it doesn't let you develop your off-roading skills past a certain point. It is however an excellent bike for those who want to enjoy off-road easily and are not that interested in later "evolving" to bigger bikes.

Great topic. This is so true. I’ve seen a lot of novice riders buy huge expensive ADV bikes and then after one scary moment in the dirt, they stay on the tarmac from then onwards as the fear is cemented in their brain from one incident. Yes agree, Better to start on a smaller bike and build skills up slowly. The marketing teams and salesman in shops aren’t going to tell new riders to go away and buy an old dual sport bike. They just want more sales.
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse 3 жыл бұрын
They could however make new dual-sports, but I believe they don't do it on purpose. If they made any good dual-sports they would kill part of the ADV market...so all you get is "bikes for children", like the CRF250L, or imperfect bikes like the KTM390 (170kg for a 400cc single cilinder? This is not the KTM I used to know...) Only KTM is producing the 690Enduro... every other brand quit the light-weight 600-650 segment... now Kawasaki release that new KLR650 that is basically a 205kg XT660Z but 15 years late :P

Hello! "Bonsai man" ahahahah, that is a good one :D Well, we dont have the ktm250 adv here in europe, only the 390 adv, and i happen to be testing one right now! To be honest, i dont think these are good bikes for offroad... They can do offroad, but they dont do it well, and with 175kg they are not even light (although they dont feel very heavy...). I tried (and maybe a review) of the Himalayan a few months ago and to be honest, it felt like a much more interesting bike. Better offroad, more comfortable on the road, etc... Maybe slower, but it doesnt really matter. Dont you have anything in your country like a crf250L, a DR250/350, WR250, etc? Even Yamaha TW200 or something like that...those are bikes that really make the offroad feel easy and that you can learn from :o

Maybe off-road skills and adv-bike skills are different things. If you have advanced off-road skills that's of course a great starting point. For me the main point is : know your limitations. Some people riding in groups, cross there limits for the wrong reasons.
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse 3 жыл бұрын
You have a point there, ADV skills are not exactly the same as general off-roading, but (in my opinion) they are not that different. Its like...for ADV bikes you need all the off-road knowledge and then some more :o About what you said, the groups, yeah, I couldn't agree more. Lots of people (both experienced and rookies) sometimes forget where their limits are... then they ruin the weekend for everyone :D

Do you have any bike recommendations for a heavier rider learning offroad? Your points on this video make a lot of sense. I've been trying to figure out what the right bike to learn for me would be (my weight is 125kg), normally the problem I have found is smaller and lighter bikes also have springs that are too soft for my weight.
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Jose! Where are you from? Knowing this helps me narrow down what bikes and options would be available. And how tal are you? As for springs/suspensions, it is always possible to upgrade the springs on any bike, so in theory even a big guy like you can ride a DT50 with an optimal suspension setup :) Usually I recommend to begin with a used dual-sport from the 90s (like i mentioned in the video). They are very good, easy to learn with, and because they are cheap, half the fear is out of the equation. So DR650, DRZ400, TT600 (or TT600RE, or TT600E...i am not sure which one is electric start) KLX650C, NX650, DR350SE, XT600, etc. Make sure you always pick the electric start version, as some of these bikes have kick-start versions (and at least for me that doesnt work anymore). With 125kg i wouls probably stay clear of the 250ccs...the 350ccs might be OKish. Even an old WR450 (or 426) with license plate would be an interesting choice. Now, modern bikes...hmmm..... Actually this is a problem cause brands have been so eager to sell expensive adv bikes that most of them stopped developing dual-sports. I am yet to test the new CRF300L, but i dont think it would be a bad choice... Maybe considering your weight I'd go for the 450L instead. I dont really like the Hymalayan so I am not recommending that one (Its not a terrbile bike, but I think an old an humble XT600 is better in 8 out of 10 specs). The PR7, the KTM690 or the Husq 701 would be fine choices. A guy your size would tame them in no time. A bit older, but still "modern" you have the BMW G650Xchallenge and XCountry, the SWMs (the 600+ series) and even the XT660R (the blue one I have..note: stock it does t have nav tower). Keep in mind that with 125Kg you will probably have to replace the spring on any bike you pick. Even the 690/701. But thats not that expensive...maybe around 250eur (~125 for front springs and 125eur for rear spring) + labor For now, this is all I got :D
