In this China vlog about living in Beijing as a foreigner, I am out on the Labour Day holiday to see the Beijing Auto Show. As a Car Show, it is excellent and reminds me of my youth. But, I am not that into cars, so there is that!

By far your funniest (unintentional) video..."It's just a car..." Good on you for going, Ian. One thing positive about China is the new BYDs used in Beijing as didi and as taxis are a big improvement on the small 4 doors gas cars They are so smooth and roomy. Trade shows in China are fascinating, go to more. I recommend the fishing tackle show in Yanjiao.

😂 thank you, on the way I was considering trying to do a review of sorts and then I realised I knew nothing about cars, had no way of blagging it and to be honest - I couldn’t get buzzed for it. Although, as you said, trade shows in China are always very busy… now a fishing tackle show, that might be a slightly slower pace, but then, not so sure 😝

I am over 50 years old this year. Before, China could not make its own family cars. From the early Soviet Union's Lada, to later Xiali, Fiat, Citroën... they were all joint ventures. I have seen progress, but I have also seen some problems. However, China needs this kind of iteration. As long as we work hard, there will definitely be results. Maybe the next time you go to a car show, you need to have a large outdoor platform because there are so many low-flying vehicles that may show up.

😂 I think you might be right, there are a few flying cars in the works… who knows, 🤷🏻‍♂️ it could be a specific event - a Flying Car Show!! That I would go to see! ✌️

Not a car review But it shows what "car experts" wouldn't pay attention to. The ordinary Chinese attending. Lots of the them. A happy crowd

Actually, I loved this review! It showed me all that I would want to see: Big cars, small cars, cheap cars, expensive cars, red cars, black cars, a purple car - enough for me! That noise and crowd would be unbearable for me 'cos I am a rather shy and quiet guy. Peace, brother! 🥸👍

It is a good story, showing the reality, that the mainstream media not tell us, by the way, being a good review , it is not necessarily to be technically professional. The crowds, young faces are telling a story different from mainstream media 😂😂😂😂

Loved your car show video as like you I’m not into cars as it’s there to get you A to B, and don’t understand what’s all the fuss is about. All cars should be based on your rating system - nice looking car, crap car, big car… 😂

😂 that would be a great way to organise a rating system based on ‘good car, crap car, big car’ as designated by a simple online opinion vote - I think there is an app in that idea 💡

Yeah, I don’t get the wasted money that goes into cars, if you look at Liability and Assets on your household balance sheet - a car is one of the largest liabilities!! 🤷🏻‍♂️

It is so true that for the average, car is a money pit! The basic function of a car is to go from point A to point B. To arrive there is the key, if in style and comfort that would be ideal for some!

I so agree, when you do the maths, the amount of money you spend on a car is eye watering… and just recently there was a massive hike in insurance premiums (for no reason at all)

I'm not a petrol head, but I do like photographing nice looking cars. I do like electric cars and all the new tech going into cars. Cars are really a big waste of money. The minute you drive a new car off the lot it's lost value. They don't generally hold any value long term unless they become a much sort after classic car then they could be worth more than the original price tag. BYD are now in the UK selling cars, there's a showroom in Sheffield though I've not been for nose around yet.

I am not sure of the price of BYD in the UK, but I am impressed with what I see when I look at them. The value for money is excellent and if they are cheap to run (and not so much a money pit) then I would buy one myself.

I only hear moans from Tesla owners - about he after service, and initial costs... a money pit, but worth it in a way as it can save money compared to a petrol car..

Mine was a stick shift and one day when I was changing gears the shifter ended up in my hand lol

@@12rmoreau Hahahah, I remember I broke down a few days after getting mine and I opened the bonnet and there was more space around the engine than there was engine and I think it was a combination of oil and sawdust that was holding it together. I tell you what though, I loved that car 😂

How difficult is it for a foreigner to get a driving licence in China? I don’t think you can drive there without one (international permits aren’t sufficient） You would need to be able to read Chinese characters on the road signs, for a start!

You can choose the language do you need in testing system.

@@hannoshovan5873 Thank you. But I think you still need to have passed a test to be able to drive there, even if you have a licence from another country. (I have been driving for more than 50 years. Whether I could pass the current test is another matter!!)

Yeah, you do need to sit a test here in China before you can drive a car using your foreign license. I have managed to get around using trains, metro, taxis and drivers to take me to the odd to get to places.. One day I even ended up in a student bus, me at the front introducing myself and talking about my hometown over a Mic… it was a student meet up event, it was great, but I was oddly placed. But I went that route because I wanted to go see a specific location. 😂
