Great point by Russillo here. I think they're also going be better in today's game. A center that can also switch out in the perimeter to anchor the defense in ben, a versatile stretch 4 in Sheed, two great defensive wings that are also great shooter in Prince and Rip and a stable, savant pg in Billups go put it all together.

I hate the NBA leadership but they deserve a lot of credit for going against the grain and understanding that Mr. Ben Wallace absolutely had a Hall of Fame career..... This man led the Pistons to 6 conference finals, two finals and the one title in 2004. He was a four time Def. Player of the year and 5 time first team all defense . And he was a rebounding machine. But what him truly a great player is seen in the team built around him. He forced his teammates to be better than they were by getting them to play defense like no.other team in history Chauncey billips was washed up until he came to Detroit. Rip Hamilton sucked before and after being a Piston, and he was great........ Tayshaun Prince learned by watching after he was drafted and it showed when he blocked that layup out of nowhere vs. Indiana..,.. No one could take Rasheed Wallace but Ben Did. Sheed new from the rip that this was his team and he accepted that........ No one has ever been responsible as he was for building a championship With misfits.... Billips Hamilton nor prince will be in HOF, not even close

This current version of the Heat team reminds me so much if the Pistons back then. They may not be the sexiest team, but the most solid. Just like that Pistons team, they can run with you and slow you down and beat you up. The seem to have it covered across the board with everything and can matchup evenly with other teams and play at whatever pace.

I know people love to talk about the 2004 Finals and say that it was Wallace's defense on Shaq that led the Pistons to the upset, but Shaq averaged 26 PPG on 63% shooting in that series. Wallace did a good job don't get me wrong, but Malone being hurt and Kobe basically shooting them out of the series (38% FG on 23 attempts a game compared to Shaq's 17 attempts a game for perspective, 17% 3PT) were the two biggest factors. That 04 upset is still one of the best championship stories in NBA history though and Wallace and all those guys deserve a lot of credit.

Shaq couldn't get whatever he wanted and the amount of times their offense stalled trying to get it into the post will not show on a box score. They also didn't get second chance or fast breaks because we killed the boatds.

The Pistons had a better roster if you compare players 3-12 on both rosters. Shaq and Kobe were obviously the best players in the series. But after that, the Lakers roster was very thin and the Pistons completely neutralized them including Kobe.
@iamthejolson
@iamthejolson 2 жыл бұрын
@@andysawyer647 Yea I'm not saying Shaq dominated or anything, I'm pushing back on the simplistic take I've seen over and over from people that "Oh Ben Wallace shut Shaq down and that's why the Lakers lost." I did say the Pistons deserve credit and Wallace did a good job.
@johndebono1870
@johndebono1870 2 жыл бұрын
Well 26 sounds less impressive until you remember that Shaq averaged 38, 34 and 36 in his other Finals trips with the Lakers. Wallace slowing Shaq down is why you had to rely on Kobe and let the other Pistons shut him down. That doesn't happen without Wallace being the centrepiece of their defence.
@iamthejolson
@iamthejolson 2 жыл бұрын
@@johndebono1870 I swear people don't actually read. I didn't say Wallace didn't play good defense on him, I'm saying it's not the primary reason the Lakers lost. Btw 26 sounds impressive considering it was actually his best offensive series that year as he averaged 16.2 PPG on 52% against the Rockets, 23 PPG on 64% against the Spurs, 20.7 PPG on 57% against the Timberwolves, and finally 26.6 PPG on 63% shooting against the Pistons. Wallace was good on defense against Shaq, but he didn't shut him down like people talk like he did.

Pistons won bc Kobe wanted to prove he could win Finals MVP over Shaq. He shot 6 FGA more per game then Shaq but averaged 4-5 less ppg then Shaq (22-23 to 26-27 on 38 FG% vs 63 FG%…Kobe was also 20% or so from 3) and was outplayed by Billups and RIP. Lakers were one of biggest finals favorites ever. Shaq wasn’t as dominant as 92-93 to 2001-02 (especially those last 3 yrs) but he still averaged 27 & 12 on 63 FG% on only 16-17 shots per game!

Guy’s, Let’s be real..Ben Wallace averaged 9ppg in a system that insisted he got multiple touches a night,,one of the greatest defenders of the early 2000s. He was never dominant on the offensive end at any point of his career though , Andre Drummond, Steven Adams and Gobert. All seen diminished roles in the playoffs, because they can’t keep up with this pace nor guard on the perimeter while getting cooked on switches. I love Ben Wallace but today’s NBA wouldn’t have ever started Ben Wallace on any team in the League atm.
