It's hard finding a favourite cheap portable Bluetooth speaker to fit a £100 or even a £50 budget, so I checked out LG's new XBoom Go PK3 and PK5 speakers - currently costing £49 and £79 respectively in the UK. Here's my ears-on review with these LG Bluetooth speakers, to see if cheap really does mean a compromise in quality.
Previously, the best compact, portable speakers that I'd tested for a sub-£100 price were the UE WonderBoom and the Bose Soundlink Micro. However, while LG's XBoom Go blasters aren't quite as dinky, they're certainly decent for that low asking price. You'll notice some quality issues when blasting rock or metal music, with some muddy sound reproduction on top volume, but we can't fault the Xboom Go PK3 or PK5 for their performance at this asking price.
Despite the budget cost, both XBoom Go speakers are water resistant (IPX7 in the PK3's case) and rugged to boot. They support AptX and the PK5 has AptX HD smarts, while also boasting some LED action. You get a bass boost function on both XBooms also, although this seems to do very little on the smaller model.
