I just want to throw out some appreciation for jessica speaking chinese at the beginning of this video when shes literally deaf??? I get so nervous saying anything in Chinese because the pronunciation is so hard but she just did it???

Happy Lunar New Year! I live in a city with a large Asian population, so it’s a celebration everyone gets involved in, Chinese or not! This year, I was able to take a calligraphy class to make the signs for the house on red paper. It was so cool!

I have a question. Has Rupert taught you anything that you wouldn't have thought about/see from a different perspective? I've followed and loved your videos for years but this genuinely made me tear up as a queer Chinese person who's also a recent British immigrant. For someone whose culture can seem diametrically opposed to their queer identity at times, you and Claudia have always given me hope that it's possible to flourish as someone who's both queer and Asian. I love that you celebrate Chinese New Year with Rupert and that you know all the good food - and yes, I agree, cheong fun over char siu bao any day. Happy Lunar New Year to you and yours, Jessica! I bought a pair of Dingli Stevens books on Chinese New Year and the Mooncake Festival for a friend's kids before. But it's sometimes a challenge to find children's books celebrating local culture and folk stories.

As a 16-year-old, sticker dolly dressings books were my whole childhood 😭😭 They also all had this certain smell that now feels very nostalgic to me!!

fun fact, I've met the person who wrote "It's Chinese New Year, Curious George" and she said that they (the Curious George/book company) originally wanted to title it about Lunar New Year, but she pushed to title it Chinese New Year because she (Chinese) only wrote about Chinese traditions as to leave the opportunity (which she acknowledged was pretty unlikely) for future "Vietnamese New Year" "Thai New Year" etc. books. It's important to both remember that Lunar New Year is not just celebrated by Chinese people, and that the Chinese traditions are not universal!

Books are Windows and Mirrors for Children and that is important - Windows to see things they don't maybe see in their everyday life and Mirrors so they get to see their life represented in books, giving them confidence! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for this video - I loved it - I work in a Public Library in a tiny little town in the middle of rural Pennsylvania - and I am Miss Kim of Storytime "fame" LOL! I am submitting this list to the director for purchase. When I tried to do a Storytime based around the Chinese New Year our County Library system was seriously lacking, especially for the pre-school age group. Also this video was just lovely!

i don't have any children (and wont for a good few years) but i am definitely going to check out that sticker book! i do a lot of journaling, and my book journal is always in need of diverse fun stickers!!! I am definitely going to use these in my entry for Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao (5★, highly recomend)

I’m not even going to try to attempt with voice to text to wish you a happy Chinese new year year of the dragon in two years time. It is my Chinese new year beastie now the problem with that is when I first learned what my animal in Chinese new year of the horoscope Was it was extremely accurate and description and a few other things and then I saw the following lines in the year I was born they were more abortions because nobody wanted a fire horse. Apparently my zodiac character only comes around once every 60 years you talk about cultural diversity, how do you handle having a teenager? I was about 14 at the time reading that when it comes to books on Chinese astrological characters and the new year just curious hopefully they’re not in any modern books.

I’m having a bit of an identity crisis because I found out like 3 days ago that I’m not actually born in the year of the rat, but the pig 😭 I’ve spent 28 years reclaiming the rat and being hyped about it. And now I find out I’m actually the loser of the race instead of the winner???? I grew up in China, and when my Chinese teachers told us what zodiac animal we were, I didn’t think to question it. They had my birthday on file, so I figured they looked at it 😭 they even gave me a stamp with my Chinese name, English name, and a rat on it, and now it isn’t even accurate 😭😭😭 Sorry, needed to vent cuz no one else in my life is understanding why this is important to me 😅

I’m born in the year of the rabbit and my favorite animals is rabbits 😄 Fun fact there’s a chinese deity called Tu’er Shen who is the god for gay men 🥰 But looking at the story it’s based on its not that wholesome 😂

@@AnotherCraig it’s called The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation, it has a few adaptations like a donghua (chinese animation), manhua (chinese manga), live action, etc but personally my favorite is the novel ☺️ I recommend reading the novel first if you’re a beginner to chinese culture though since the novel explains things that they can’t in the adaptations .

When you put words onscreen, can you please consider colour contrast and put the words on solid backgrounds? If your goal is to communicate accessibly, white on white or white on moving, multicoloured (especially lighter colours) does the opposite. Yes, there are also KZfaq captions, but why would you want your visual product to be a barrier, when you are otherwise very disability-positive? Thanks, and I love the content of your videos.
