8-day Quetico Paddle: Falls Chain to Agnes Lake for trout fishing in skin-on-frame canoes built by Urban Boatbuilders:
urbanboatbuilders.org/
GPS tracks: goo.gl/KQNhz7
For those not familiar with the Quetico, it is just North of the Boundary Waters (BWCAW), but much less traffic.

I took my kids there. My oldest caught the only fish for all 4 of us to eat. But I had already made sure we all had meals everyday from the grocery in Ohio. Oatmeal, jerky, noodles, peanut butter, cheese, granola, steaks for the 1st night, more. All There.

Looks like a great trip! Those petroglyphs were really cool. The fish dinners made me hungry- and jealous. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for watching! I see a lot of petroglyphs in the desert southwest, but it's interesting to see them up North as well.

It is a very special place. This was my first trip to the Quetico, but now I definitely want to return. Much less traffic than the BWCAW, so you aren't fighting other paddlers for campsites.
@cabinman

Kurt Papke I've been to BWCA twice about 15 years apart and noticed that traffic is much worse now. It's much more poplar than it was 20 years ago.

Yes. It used to be that after Labor Day the BWCAW was deserted, now it doesn't taper off until the weather gets bad.

My buddies and I have done the BWCAW 1/2 dozen times. Your video makes me want to go back and try the Quetico! Kurt, you sounds just like the narrator to the Richard Proenneke videos! Nice video. Found it from a link on your store bought meal suggestions for backpacking. Keep them up.

Quetico is worth the extra cost. Lots fewer people than the BWCAW. I'll have to check out Proenneke, not familiar with him. I narrate audiobooks on the side :-)

The Richard Proenneke Cabin he built by hand and lived in for 30 years in Alaska is a national treasure. You will love the video. Btw. Must be two Lake Agnes’s. Paddled the BWCAW one several times but it doesn’t reach the Quetico best I remember.

And I try so hard to keep my videos short! I had lots more footage from the trip, but I try to edit them so they end up under 10 minutes. I get that some people like extended/long form videos. Maybe I need to consider doing a "directors cut" of some of them in addition to the short version?

@@KurtPapke I hope you didn't leave video of someone portaging a canoe over "THE ROCK" at Silver Falls portage on the cutting room floor . Yes, I have been over that rock many times. In fact. On my honeymoon. My wife, a former rower . Portage a 74lbs alumicraft up that portage without stopping. She did have tears in her eyes at the end. Then we paddled sw across cache bay with a tail wind. It got very dicy the last 1/3 of the way across. I have many stories of that part of Quetico. My last time there in 2012 . We packed up camp the last morning just before the rain started at 6am. The rain started as we paddled for Deadmans portage. After 5 hours of paddling and portaging in the rain. We arrived at Hook Island. We were cold and wet and out of energy. We found the last of our dry clothing and bundled up as warm and dry as we could. But then had to wait 2 hours for the boat to arrive. They don't go out when lighting is in the area. It would have been miserable if we didn't have dry clothes

What did the canoe weigh? Did you take those just to be different? Why not Kevlar?
@KurtPapke
@KurtPapke 4 жыл бұрын
Depending on the model they are 35-40lbs. We take them because we like them :-) Also, two of the guys on the trip are on the board of Urban Boatbuilders, the non-profit that makes them. Kevlar is a lot heavier.

What 8 days did the trip occur in the year? e.g. Sept 1-8 Were the portages easy to medium difficulty- I sense this from your comments.
@KurtPapke
@KurtPapke 3 жыл бұрын
September 3-10. The portages varied in difficulty. Some were trivial, some were pretty taxing. None of the portages had route finding issues or anything like that. But a couple were pretty long with steep grades.

At the bottom of Silver Falls, I had to yell and threaten my kids in another canoe to paddle directly toward the falls. They wouldn't be able to get very far, but they wouldn't be pinned against the cliff on the opposite side, especially with trees sticking out in the water. Control! Silver Falls is the only really dangerous spot, and that's where you're going IN.
@golfish8589
@golfish8589 5 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you are talking about. I did not want to cross that way. Ferring across is the best way. But I was over ruled. The water did not actually pin us against the wall. But we were right next to it. And we did have to do a back bend under those branches. The water was at a 60 year high. Yah, that and the first falls on the Falls chain can get dicy real quick

What, in your opinion, makes this better than BWCAW?
@KurtPapke
@KurtPapke 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. Many fewer people, better fishing. We did the Falls Chain, and you just don't see that many waterfalls in the BWCAW.

@@rustyshackleford1091 have you ever even been remotely close to a kevlar canoe? if not id suggest you not comment they are extremely light and built for speed not stability they are like a plastic ..seem more like plastic ....i can seem them cracking or breaking if hitting a rock or eventual wear and tare...you can use your kevlar one there Andrew ill stick to the coleman they are much more durable
@golfish8589
@golfish8589 5 жыл бұрын
Sonny c. The kevlar canoes have high density foam in the floor. We purchased a beat up kevlar canoe from an outfitter 15 years ago. After many trips and a little care . It's not much worse for ware. It also the shape of the canoe. Not the material it is made of that gives it it's stability. Flat bottom canoes have great initial stability . But secondary stability is poor. Once they get tipped so far, they go over. Rounded bottom canoes have less initial stability, feels a little tippy. But great secondary stability. They can roll on there side and not tip
