As a person who loves to teach woodworking to enthusiasts, I’ve got to say that this tutorial is top notch! All parts of the plane were described in logical language that can be understood very quickly. Therefore I think that you put tremendous amount of energy in making your videos successful. Also, comparison of the different plane makers comes with experience. I have never had an issue with Veritas or competitors, such as Lie Nielsen, but Veritas Lee Valley has been much more cooperative with me on many issues throughout the years. I honestly believe that your channel ought to be featured, so I will feature it in my channel with hope that you will have increase in views. Thank you again for your efforts.

4:12 - the bevel down blades generally come with a 25 degree angle on the bevel, but you want to final sharpen to a 30 degree bevel. That puts a tiny section of 30 degree on the end of the blade (that you cannot feel by hand), and that's why you use a jig. You don't WANT to match that factory installed bevel - you want to exceed it slightly. My understanding is that the reason for this is that it makes it a lot faster to sharpen, since you are working that entire wide bevel against your sharpening stone, but rather only the narrow bit that's been added to the tip.

Blimey - I watched this last year and ended up getting the Veritas partly on the strength of your explanation. It's a lovely plane, and the plane chamfer guide really makes taking the corners off stuff easy. I built a bed frame and almost did away with sanding because of the the plane chamfer guide. I totally forgot to say THANK YOU!

It's been my favorite plane too for several years, it just works great and is so satisfying to use. I like the mass and weight, though it's too heavy to keep in a pocket. But now it has competition -- I recently got the Veritas large and medium shoulder planes. They are so beautifully made and work so well that now I look for opportunities to use them. The Veritas No. 4 smoother I got several years ago is nice but just not as impressive as the block and shoulder planes.

3:00 - "A little bit of physics." That made me laugh - that "physics stuff." I actually love physics; there's an awful lot of cool info buried in it. But yeah - when you get down to practical work, too much physics can get in the way. I just found your videos this morning and I'm loving them so far. :-)

Because I like it better and the cap is more steam punk with the hinge. Actually at the time I do think the general populous thought they were higher quality. But after a century it's all a matter of care.

You had me at "Millers Falls". I've found them to be a bargain compared to Stanleys, etal. and I love all of mine. Do you have anything to say about Japanese planes? I'm interested in them after your link to Ishitani Furniture the other day. Oh, and you love for your Veritas block plane is exactly how I feel about my Lie-Nielsen rabbet block plane. After I got it, I forgot about my other block planes completely. It's my goto guy for almost everything. Love your daily tips. Hope they're doing what you want on the KZfaq front. thanks.

Back in the day I believe they were a more premium brand. Have a cool cap design with a hinge that provides a firmer grip. Some like their totes better, others don't. I'd say they perform the same. Was just trolling the Stanley fanboys.

Is there such thing as a double blade plane? One where you can cut going and coming?
@wortheffort

Yes there are. I've seen pictures of shoulder planes just like that. But they're kinda like Jackalopes, only in pictures.

@@wortheffort Your response made me giggle. I have a friend who recently made a post about his"double bevel" sliding table miter box. It's an advertising thing on the dewalt that has left and right tilt. NOT a double bevel. I told him if it was a true double bevel machine it would have to somehow cut a double bevel in one operation. Not possible with only one blade. He couldn't understand my opinion and simply believed the advertising BS. Thought I would let you know that I bagged a record Jackalope a few years ago at a secret location in Wyoming!
