Efficient breathing during dance not only helps with better endurance and energy levels, but also reduces muscle fatigue and injuries. I’m sharing a few breathing exercises which I have been practicing for some time now and have helped me immensely with my stamina.
Both dancers and non-dancers can reap the amazing benefit it has on our body. Hope you find it useful.

I thought breathing is easy and I could do it in a jiffy. Now I know it's not as easy as it all seems. Well I tried Nadi Shodhana... I lost count of left / right, inhale / outhale..., but it's fun. I tried Kapalabhathi and Bhastrika are really strong exercises for the tummy and the chest. Really demanding. That means I think our stomach and chest cage becomes stronger due to the use. I am sure these will strengthen the lung breathing power. Covie-19 virus attacks the respiratory system. Developing a strong respiratory system would improve our chances of fighting the infection and overcoming it.

Yes, that's how Nadi Shodhana also increases concentration and co-ordination. Exactly! Like you said, Kapalabhati/Bhastrika require a lot of energy and are said to generate heat in the body. And you are 100% right about increasing lung capacity :)

Beautifully explained. The timings are equally important. I never understood and followed the timings. Now it's clear. I liked your commentary as well... "leave your audience breathless and not yourself...". Good one. 😀😀👍👍

Thank you soo much! Yeah.. You could play this video while practising or count for yourself. The timing is very important. The proportion should be same even if you increase the time of inhalation/exhalation :) I too loved that line! Haha..

Thank god I found it, I used to do Semi classical and Kathak some years ago and was good at it, but due to tight study schedule I had to leave practice and now when I do it, I fall short of breath but I am going to follow these exercises for sure. Thanks a ton

Namaste Parvathy! Just to clarify, as mentioned in the video, it should be done early in the morning or if you are doing later in the day, make sure it is 4-5 hours after having your food. To answer your question, it depends on what kind of workout you are doing. If it is conditioning or strength training, I recommend that you make this part of your cool down, that is post your workout. If you are practising yoga, an ideal practice would consist of a short seated meditation, light pranayama, asana practice, then a longer pranayama followed by seated meditation. If you cant spare so much time, you can just do your asana practice and end it with Pranayama :) Hope this helps.

Thank you so much 🙂The idea is to have bladder and bowels empty before starting the pranayama practice :) A glass of water should be ok. However, it is good to do the practice in an empty stomach.

In Pranayam, I would like to know that you showed us Nadi Shodh pranayam. What is difference between that n Anulomvilom pranayam.

Most of the times the names are used interchangeably. But like I mentioned in this video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZxio8qorduUp58.html In Nadi Shodhana technique, the air is inhaled from left nostril - breath is held and exhaled from the right one. The second time the air is inhaled from the right nostril - breath is held and exhaled from the left one. In Anulom Vilom, air is inhaled from left nostril and exhaled from the right one, after that it is inhaled from the right nostril and exhaled from the left one. We do not retain breath here. We do alternate nostril breathing. As mentioned in the video, alternate breathing is the first step and then you move to nadi shodhana to retain breath. Hope I answered your question :)

Hi! Very happy you are doing it regularly :) It is a must to do warm up and cool down before and after any dance practice. The strengthening videos should become part of your training regime. This could be in the morning or evening according to your convenience.

Hi. Thank you for the video. I have a doubt. Do we do pranayama before or after yoga/ dance practice?

Pleasure is mine! I recommend that you make Pranayama part of your cool down, that is post your dance practice. If you are practising yoga, an ideal practice would consist of a short seated meditation, light pranayama, asana practice, then a longer pranayama followed by seated meditation. If you cant spare so much time, you can just do your asana practice/workout routine and end it with Pranayama :) Hope I answered your question.

Hi akka,i have been doing pranayama for a long time now but still im having shortness of breath while dancing especially mulumandi adavus.Can i pls get some advice for that?Anyways ur videos are useful but my breath is a little weak

I can't think of any other solution than improving your stamina! Practice dance and workout I would say!

Mam when am dancing my ears is kinda gets blocked and I feel very weak any suggestion would be great 🙏 thanks in advance

Not really sure why that happens! Weakness is because of the ear blockage?

isn't it going to be very stressful for the muscles if we tend to practice dance for 4 hours and also exercise or do yoga alongside??

Depends on how rigorous your routine is and how strong you are. If you do rigorous 4 hours of dance practice everyday, then you can reduce intensity of your workout. If you are a beginner, it is not a good idea to dance for 4 hours and also exercise. But I don't think a beginner would dance for 4 hours everyday :)

I'm getting trained for my arangetrum! For which I am practicing 4 hours everyday And I feel just dance is not sufficient to become flexible and improve stamina. We definitely need an additional support like yoga! So, please let me know how to balance the 2 of them (intensity of workout) each day! Thank you :)

You need to do strength, flexibility and endurance training along with dance practice, increase your stamina and flexibility gradually. There is no quick solution to this. The days you are not dancing rigorously or practising Abhinaya, you can probably add a strength routine. The days you are doing rigorous nritta, do flexibility routine.

I'm able to exhale completely on 8 counts from left nostrils... But not able to completely exhale on 8 counts from right one.....any solution for that?
