In today's video I demonstrate how to perform bicep curls in order to take the stress off of your shoulder and prevent shoulder pain and injury.
The top of the bicep muscle is attached to the scapula (shoulder blade) by 2 long shoe string like tendons. Therefore, the bicep muscle crosses both the elbow and shoulder joint.
Often when bicep curls are performed, people engage the shoulder muscles (and bicep tendons) to help perform the exercise. This can often lead to inflammation of the upper bicep tendons.
If you frequently experience anterior (frontal) shoulder pain following bicep curls, then you should definitely watch this video. Dr. Joe demonstrates how to perform bicep curls without causing pain or injury to your shoulder.
Bicep curls should not cause you anterior shoulder pain. Give Dr. Joe's technique a try!

Thanks so much. I did the curls early this morning and I felt no pain as I use to. I had stopped doing bicep curls about 10 months ago due to the pain, but now I will continue doing them with this technique. Thanks so much for sharing. Blessings.

Man cant wait to try this next week. I have been having that issue for a LONG time.., Also have that issue when I do bench sometimes too, but I somehow fixed it by pulling my back and shoulder blades together.. And I think doing it on Bench AND doing it on Bench has kept it agitated for so long whenever i've been training.. Thanks.

I have shoulder impingement that gets aggravated whenever I do curls. Had to give up barbell curls. Alternating dumbbell curls have been less troublesome, but not pain free for the precise mechanical problem you showed her. I’m looking forward to trying this out first with dumbbells and if it works for me I’ll try barbell curls again! Thanks.

Great video. I couldn't figure out what was hurting my shoulder. So I did one excercise per day to isolate it. Found out it was bicep curls and then found this video. Thank you so much. Does leaning againts a wall help as well?

We have several videos on triceps (exercises, fascial release, etc). However, I don't think we have that exact topic that you mention. Perhaps we can make a video in the future. Thanks!

30 years with no shoulder pain until recently, assumed it was benching/dips/older age :) but after watching your video I'm thinking my pain may be from a new preacher exercise I started doing to isolate Bi's where I sit on edge of a bench hunching forward with my arms over a foam roller that is braced against my chest & legs (kind of in my lap), I curl a barbell from there, similar to a concentration curl but with both arms simultaneously. It really isolates the Bi's but my shoulders (especially left one) are killing me. If you can envision the position I'm in while performing these with my body & chest almost 45 degree angle forward while my arms are hanging straight down braced against the foam roller as I curl the bar, do you think this is bad for shoulders?

Seems like a similar concept as "pulling the slack out" on something like a deadlift. I do wonder about the slight loss of range of motion, but as someone coming back from a slew of injuries, safety should always be prioritized.

9:54 is pretty much spot on for how I do my curls. Obviously I have shoulder pain, otherwise I wouldn't be watching this video, but I am confused about something. If one of the functions of the bicep is shoulder flexion, then why is this form bad? Obviously in practice it has not worked out, but in theory it seems solid (to me at least). I like the second for you showed, and I will be trying it when I go to the gym again so see if it alleviates my pain. Thank you for the video!

Thank you so much! If i got it right this means in conclusion "preacher curls" will lead to shoulder pain at some point, is this right?
@OcraMedHealth

Not necessarily. The preacher curl has different mechanics.

I tried what you just showed, but I still have shoulder pain in my left shoulder. The only 2 ways I can work my biceps is to use the preacher curl bench and the other is to use a rope attached to the bottom setting on a machine and bring my elbows behind my back to totally disengage the front of my shoulder. I use to love doing curls, but in my 50's now have limitations.

Sometimes we have to modify our training due to injuries and pain. A perfect example is bench press. Many people as they age find this exercise a constant cause of injuries and pain. However, there are so many other (and probably better) chest exercises that you can perform instead of it. The key is to just modify your training as needed and keep training hard!! Good luck!
