The combination of Dirac’s multi-sub Bass Control system and the 4 independent subwoofer outputs available on the latest Denon and Marantz units will be a powerful tool for perfecting home theater bass. We discuss some of the limitations of DLBC and when you may prefer to instead use Audyssey. Phil also answers about future upgrade plans for Dirac ART and more.

Phil is basically saying YES to DIRAC ART will come as a software update at some point for receivers with four subwoofer outputs! 🎉

But he left enough wiggle room. He said everything has to be tested by both Dirac and SU internally to meet their own standards. So they could change their minds and exclude the x3800 from Denon and just say it didn’t test well down the line. So yes I am optimistic and they seem to want to push it as broadly as they can at the moment.

I recall a Massimo Training channel video saying the products built in Japan use the same processing board which includes the 4800. But that doesn't mean the 3800 doesn't I'm just not sure. It was also vague enough that I'm unsure if the AV1 has that same board but also even more processing. Anyone know of any detailed answers for processing board specifics?

@@fantom789 Maybe the X4800H and above do use some different components that are required for ART? Or maybe Masimo doesnt want people to buy one of the cheaper AVRs in their portfolio to get the most powerful calibration system on it and call it a day. Because why should you buy the more expensive ones when the "cheap" X3800H is all you will need, if ART delivers what it promises?

The HEOS update is great. But for me main thing that’s missing is the ability to access your service’s autoplay and algorithm abilities. Not sure it’s even possible, but it’d be cool just to play a song on Amazon or Spotify and have it continue to play similar tracks afterwards.

Big HEOS user here. I like the new app and I do think it’s an upgrade. However, I’ve been crying for an updated HEOS Link and HEOS Amp forever! The current models are so long in the tooth and don’t have Apple AirPlay capabilities. Badly needs an upgrade to compete with Sonos Amp & Port and Bluesound Node. Please Phil Jones tell Massimo to come with newer models!

Great info! However, I didn’t hear much about DENON. For instance, AVR-4800H (which happens to be one that I’m expecting ASAP) and the rest of the lineup (aside from A1H). Keep up the great work and I look forward to future updates. 👍🏽

@@Audioholics The Denon X4800H (Its also my current AVR) should be the "smallest" AVR to use with the full Dirac package. The cheaper ones cost less than the damn calibration software itself. Which is weird. Anyway I personally think Audyssey MultEQ-X is with the ACM1-X mic is all you will ever need. And its "only" 280 USD compared to the 900 USD with the full Dirac Kit and an UMIK-1.

@@Cenkolino onkyo rz50 comes with full bandwith dirac, cost 800usd. full preout and 11 channels, much better value than budget denons. only denon worth considering is the A1H with 150w per channel, and if you live in a 240v country it is 100% 150w per channelable.

@@xxbabaxx12 The X-4800H is superior to the RZ-50 in every way but the integrated measurement system. Which sucks with the Denons/Marantz. Audyssey XT32 auto curve is horrible.

With Marantz going class D with their separate, there is hope that their flagship AVR can perhaps also have class D! 🤞🏼 In regards to separates, I hope the 7706/8805 gets a refresh , their AVR’s in separates mode are better options at this point 🤦🏻♂️

@@EugenioFFCosta no problem! The amps inside of receivers use different types of tech to power your equipment. Class D runs super cool and very power efficient. It can also sound clean without coloring the sound. The best for me and is a requirement for my next upgrade from my outdated 2016 class D Pioneer receiver. I love the Universal Search in the new HEOS app, I think it is was a big miss of the the updated BluOS app, so I'm really happy to see this in HEOS now that I've jumped ships from NAD to Denon a couple of months ago.

I had a NAD m10v2 The app was awful, and th unit was very buggy. Specially with turning on and off, CEC, and required constant restarts. Much more happy with my Cinema 40, even though HDMI controls are not perfect, but it doesn't require a restart

My HEOS app has newer interface with updates. Still no full flac for 24/192 for tidal 😉. I checked and it’s still not a full 24/192 in tidal. Please integrate full flac 24/192 tidal. That would enable me to finally loose Amazon music that I use primarily for flac 24/192. Tidal already offers 24/192 flac on its native app but not on HEOS. When I emailed HEOS a month ago they said the flac 24/192 for tidal in HEOS would come with update next year. Lo and behold saw the update few days ago but no flac 24/192. I’m guessing there will be another HEOS update 1st quarter of next year

New app looks good 😎 but I wish Denon / Marantz would fix the issue where the Heos Alexa smart skill won’t change the input remotely (worked fine until the firmware in Jan). Denon acknowledged this fault to me back in January but still no fix 😢

Gene, regarding HEOS, is there a reason why it doesn’t support Apple Music? I don’t know if this has already been discussed and I missed it but I noticed Phil didn’t even hint at Apple Music is his discussion about the HEOS update. Otherwise I am enjoying the HEOS update so far. Thank you for doing these update videos. So much great information gets put out.

I know it supports Siri so maybe you can play Apple Music that way? What other music management systems support Apple Music? I'd just get an AppleTv and call it a day. They you can enjoy spatial audio.

@@AudioholicsI did get an Apple TV 4k and have been enjoying discovering music in Atmos. Some is great, some good, some not so good, and some bad. I do wish Apple had a better process for finding music in Atmos. However, I like the convenience of just going into the HEOS app and just being able to turn on the receiver in the app and start playing Pandora or (until recently) Spotify and was hoping that I would be able to choose Apple music instead. Same pain the Qobuz folks are feeling. Hopefully it can be added in the future. Keep listening! 🤘🤘🤘

@@evilimpss1647I’m just guessing, but like he says, what company anywhere supports Apple Music natively? It seems to be more of an Apple decision than the other companies not incorporating it. I have two Yamaha receivers. One in bedroom and one in media room. I really wish it was incorporated as well in to Music Cast app. Currently I just have to AirPlay. I don’t know much about the specifics of AirPlay but I’m guessing it would sound better if it was native in the receiver. My media room TV does have Apple Music built in as an app so I can eARC it back to receiver.

@@brandonadams7837 You are probably correct that it's more because of Apple. They are notorious for the control they exert over everything they make. I guess I was just trying to see if someone could actually confirm this was the case. It's too bad though. I do like the convenience and simplicity of just opening the HEOS app and turning on/off the receiver, selecting a music service (in my case is typically Pandora) and start listening to music. It would be nice if I could select Apple Music instead so I could choose a specific song or band but alas that's not available at this time. As Gene mentioned, there might be other ways to work around this. I will have to explore this more when I get some time.

Will Denon/Marantz be partnering with Qobuz sometime soon? I'm a Roon fan and now have a Cambridge MXN10 (Roon Ready) connected to the Marantz AV10 via optical so that I stream from Qobuz in hi res and have album art displayed. I'm also streaming hi res Tidal and MQA through the MXN10 and on to the AV10. I don't use HEOS much anymore. Roon will connect and play my local music from my NAS as well. I know it sounds crazy spending more money on hardware to get Qobuz to stream to the AV10.

The fact that they didn't upgrade the SR 8015 flagship to include Dirac told me everything I need to know about this company. Remember the DTS Pro update they're promising...Still haven't seen that.

The SR8015 is an older platform not capable of those updates. It still supports Audyssey MultEQ-X and PC interface which is an excellent alternative.

Dirac A.R.T. with the "smaller" Stormaudio Core 16 and Fusion 20 functions with only nine support speakers, the greater models of Stormaudio doesn't have this limitation. So the Denon/Marantz models shall be support A.R.T. with five to seven speakers. The processor power is still important, but I think the RAM is another important feature.

Yeah.. For an additional fee. And you don't get to choose between the two, it's have one, or pay extra for the other. These hypebeast streams do nothing except benefit the manufacturers. Oh and.. they don't bring these features for older AVRs, for a software licence! But yes, I agree it's best not to bring out stuff if it's not working properly. I don't think HEOS works with Apple Music, unless they've added that.

The HEOS update still leaves it completely useless for streaming surround audio content from Tidal. Gave up and ended up buying a 4K firestick just for that.

99% of people are not going past 5.2, so all these extra channels , it’s a waste, redundant and increases cost when most people would be happy with a 5.2 avr. with 150watts into 8ohms and 200watts into 4ohms from a some great amps built in.

Many are using soundbar market mate. But yes 5.1 or 5.2 with a correct position and set up is still best option simplistic. Personally myself many programs are still standard codec. For example old programs are best suited for Dolby surround or standard surround format. I always found DTS hd master gave some serious slam impact to movies. We all have different set ups and cables and room acoustics.

I’d wait for Dirac Live ART. Bass Control measurements I’ve seen not very convincing. Regular Dirac Live is good enough. Audyssey MQX or Dirac Live are the best available. Dirac ART is gonna be the game changer

Always one more step for the game changer - always JUST out of reach. Keep the consumerism working. I’ve been playing with ART in my theater. It’s not the game changer you are expecting. It does help a bit with bass decay and shows so in waterfall plots, but think evolution as an adjective and not revolution.

@@jvonengelnthat’s interesting! Especially for an extra $1000. I’m happy with my MiniDSP Flex (MSO) and Audyssey MQX. I’m curious what Dirac will sound like but that could be an expensive experiment…. Especially because I have a Denon 4700 and would likely move to the AV10 Maybe the 4800 (assuming it works) would be a compromise. Also, getting more opinions on the side-by-side between Audyssey. I haven’t seen many ART measurements on the forums

Hi, how would you compare the audio quality in 2 channels and home theater compare to your storm audio processor. I personally own a Nad M-17 v2i with dirac live full bandwidth, Good in 2 channels, but the dirac live bass controls not available, plus only 2 subwoofer out, and they get calibrated as one.

BTW, I'm using Dirac live for the first time and I'm lost in the sauce! When it comes to Bass, it made all my speakers large but that said Im using all JBL speakers which are full range I think, L890s in front floor standing arena 170s surround the rear are 820s I think, I forget. Is the bass control with dirac live now to new users? Thx again

Hi gene. On the sacd30n the dac chip upgrades everything to dsd via marantz’s special dac. Doesn’t that mean you basically turn everything you listen to into dsd? Has anyone heard this effect actually in the music?

I have an AV10 and I'm going to need to do something to get more uniform bass in my room. I'm going to add IB subwoofers near the back of the room but I'm wondering what Dirac bass control can do that can't be done with external minDSP Flex balanced. Maybe I'm better off to wait for active room correction, the high pass filter on the mains with bass control would be a problem for me since the L/R mains include eight 15" open baffle drivers and have no problem down to 40 Hz. I actually have the infinite baffle 18" drivers being driven by the L/R channels, not by the LFE. Not sure why I would want to use LFE, is there really a good reason? Maybe I need to change that. I need to update the firmware on my AV10 to see if they fixed the on screen display problem for volume level, hopefully they solved that. As for bass control, it would be interesting to know more about the Dirac bass control and if it can do anything an external miniDSP can't do. The theater is surrounded by attic space on three sides so I can add attic mounted IB woofers pretty much anywhere, as many as needed to get the most out of the bass control or the active room correction.

Dirac prices are breathtaking. Made worst its been included in previous AVRs far below prices of Denon and Marantz. Youd think once you get higher tier offerings eventually it would be included. As much as I love the innovation and quality it still seems a cash grab and leaves me wondering why prices are so high.

You know it would be cool if a receiver could do a frequency sweep, and make a graph of the speaker’s impedance. Taken a step further, maybe knowledge of the speaker’s impedance characteristics could help improve the efficiency of auto EQ by anticipating weakspots that would draw so much energy as to move into distortion. Maybe even managing current reserves for parts of the spectrum known to have a large draw from those speakers. Seems like very useful data to be factoring into the automatic calibrations. I’d simply like to just see what my speaker’s impedance curve actually is, as it wasn’t published by Harmon. It would be cool to have your receiver give you a little report of how well it’s matched to your speakers. Maybe something with cool color coded graphics showing you that your amp was under strain during parts of your last session. Or showing a graphic of frequencies with distortion that scales with the volume adjustment of the receiver. Just for coolness sake it would be rad, but to put a dollar sign on it, I imagine it would help upsell people on getting new gear if they saw a chart with red regions of inadequacy. Combined with pre-amp outs, such charts might be a gateway into separates.

I have the denon 6500 and the headroom is not good it plays loud but everything is almost they same volume there's not much quiet too loud difference would the denon 8500ha be better for dynamic headroom

That just means it’s starting up you will also hear several relay clicks while it’s doing that once it’s solid white it’s ready to perform any function and audio playback.

Ditch the mDSP and see how it performs without. I don't use mdsp anymore since I have Audyssey PC and can do much more with that than mDSP.

what is the best position for 4 SUBs in a room? is it 2 in front and 2 at the back? close to the front left & rights?

All 4 corners is the best option. If you only have 2 the way people put them both in-between the front is wrong. You have to put one on the leftside corner on the front and the other on the rightside corner in the back (or vice versa). I remember some sound expert saying this years ago and its true.

I have a Marantz Cinema 50 and run a 5.1 system. It includes Audyssey XT32. Can someone explain to me why I should spend the significant cost increase to go to Dirac and which version of Dirac would be my best bet? Thanks.

It's hard to explain unless you hear the difference. Dirac just sounds far better. I have both on my AV10. I've A/B them back to back. Curtain set to 300hz on both and Dirac sounds better. If you have good speakers and your room is properly treated I would say all you need is Dirac limited. No need to correct above 500hz. If you're running multiple subs, the bass control makes a noticeable improvement.

@@jafo1701 Thanks for the input. I use Polk reserve speakers (R500, R300, in ceiling surrounds, Polk HTS12 sub), all of this is in a 15x20x8 room. Its a normal living not a dedicated theatre. Thats why I'm not sure that it will make a big differnce between teh two correction systems. Your system must be amazing.

@@arndtbc I have a 9.3.6 system. My mains are B&W 804D4. Have the matching center HTM82 D4 and front wides are 805 D4. Surrounds are 703S2s and rears, which eventually I'll rotate out are CDM9NTs. 6 SVS prime elevation speakers for atmos. Amps are two Emotiva XPA HC1s for each main, Monolith 200x3 for center and wides. OSD and Adcom amps power the surrounds and atmos. Of course have Marantz AV 10 as the preamp and 2 SVS PB4000 for the front subs with a SVS PC 4000 for the rear. My room is also fully treat with GIK acoustic panels. TV is a 77" LG G2 and I have a gaming PC hooked up to it with a Ryzen 5800X3D and RTX 4090.

The modal density stays the same no matter the number of sources. But you excite the ‘available’ modes differently.

I dont like his answer when he said it 'should' be a software update when talking about the Dirac bass ....it either is or isnt and He 'should' know this .When certain manufacturers had 2.0 HDMI support they knew it would be a hardware update and how much it should cost . If its a hardware update then alot of people are going to be pissed and those waiting to buy might hold off to make sure if its a software update or a hardware update And on a side note maybe Misimo can throw in a new watch with the update! lol

Audyssey MultiEQ-X with the ACM1-X is all you will ever need in a home theater scenario. Many people prefer it over Dirac in fact. I love it but I admit I never used Dirac but why should I with the MultiEQ-X already in use?

I bet they apply the the High Pass filter becuase it’s difficult to get a flat LFE+Main AND LFE. I had a bear of a time trying to get Large, LFE + main. I love MQX but I would go with ART once it’s out. An expensive experiment

Getting the timing right between fullrange speakers and subs is always a challenge, especially if the speakers are of different tuning and/or mixing and matching sealed w ported, etc. I spent a lot of effort to get my Perlisten S7t ported speakers to blend with my sealed JL Audio subs using Audyssey Mult-EQ PC but it was well worth it.

Gene - I would be very grateful if you could describe how you did this. Also if you could describe how you adjusted the bass frequency response and level with LFE+mains. I have B&W 808s which are certainly bass capable but I have not been able to successfully adjust the sum total bass level of LFE+Mains. What I hope to do is have a quasi 4 sub system with 2 subs in the rear and the 808s in the front. cheers Derek

I find the new HEOS user interface completely confusing. Also, it doesn't come anywhere close to time synching devices in different rooms. I'm talking about SECONDS of delay. I CAN NOT play HEOS devices in different rooms with the same source. Absolutely unlistenable.

Heos is not really needed as AV Receivers are not really good for music. Much better to add a Stereo Amp, with AV Bypass to front left & right Preouts of a AV Receiver for more enjoyable music playback

@@kael13 Don't need a Subwoofer for music with my speakers they go down to 35hz which is enough in my small living room. Dedicated Stereo Amp will always sound better than AV Receivers for 2ch music. If you need a Subwoofer just get a Rel Subwoofer with High Level connection lead, connect it to Stereo Amps binding posts, then got 2.1 from Stereo Amp

I bought a avc1 the flagship model and kept reading comments like yours..This isn't true and I wish people would stop saying this, I went into a store and demoed a Rega aethos and a naim supernait..and the truth is they all sound different but I wouldn't say 1 is better..if it was I would of bought a separate amp but I didn't, I had the arcam avr31 until it had problems and that sounded good too. If anyone is reading this and wants to know my input. The arcam sounds like the Rega, the Denon sounds like the Naim. That's my opinion

It's always the same with these supposedly new gimmicks in the audio world. Dirac Live or Audyssey or any of those. All they do year after year is change something, it doesn't matter what, just to make it sound different. And the only thing that happens is that it sounds different. Your ear no longer knows if it's better or not. It only knows if it's different. And that's why they keep charging more and more. What are you going to tell me? That now Audyssey is worse than Dirac Live because it does one thing more instead of less? And of course, now that Dirac Live does one thing less, it's got balls. No, it's all a business, and I would even believe that Gene is falling into the same nonsense.

Room Correction is a tool that can be good if used correctly or disastrous if not. I actually prefer PC Audyssey over Dirac Live, but it takes a lot of fiddling to get it sounding right. There is no push the red button to audio perfection despite you seem to imply we are saying otherwise.

Not at all. What really bothers me is spending $8500 on what's purported to be the pinnacle of sound technology, only to have an update come out claiming to make it sound even better. It's ridiculous. I already had to purchase the MultiEQ app separately for PC because apparently, integrating it was too complex. Now, they're touting Dirac Live with additional packages as if it's some great success. I'm all for embracing new technology, which is why I bought the A1H upon release. But now, reviews suggest it's worth spending even more on top of the hefty $8500 price tag for what was supposed to be the ultimate model. Why wasn't this included initially? Why should I feel compelled to buy into this gimmick? And after making the investment, what do I hear? Just subtle changes in the sound, which was already good. It makes you wonder, is it truly better or just different? I live in Argentina , so Thats why is a lot more expensive here :) @@Audioholics

INTYERESTING - I have 2 SubWoofwrs to a Marantz with Some Subwoofer Controls Over LFE Incl Level and Cross-Over, HOWEVER it doesn't Control BOTH LFE Outputs to Balance and Allow For Low & High Freq Control. This Tuning would be Welcome-- have to Contact marantz. HOWEVER - Quality of ALL RECORDING are Very Inconsistent in HOW THEY HANDLE LFE (AND) whether Both LFE Channels are Included in the recording -- OR NOT!
