Bill Murray young, old and in between, has always been golden. Just naturally funny, even in general conversation (listen to the camera people laughing), highly intelligent, exudes biting wit and sarcasm, dead pan expression and HILARIOUS. He’s a national treasure. Gilda, What a talent and what a heart. She was one of a kind. Gone way to soon.

He's a piece of crap. And people think Chevy was a dick. This guy is the SINGLE reason we never got ghostbusters 3 and he only made up with Harold Ramis days before he died. Fuck Bill Murray (after lost in translation). The only upside is he'll never get that oscar he so DESPERATELY wanted.

I was a regular caller to the Tom Snyder radio show back in the 90's. I was on about 10 times with various celebrities and Tom loved my jokes. His favorite was when I was on with Rita Coolidge and Tom told the joke, "What do you get when you play a country music record backwards -- you get your truck back, your wife back..." We all laughed and I said, "What do you get when you play new age music backwards?" Tom, still chuckling, said, "Tell us, Dan." "New Age music." Silence for a second, then Tom absolutely erupted in laughter, and I heard him tell that joke twice on his show after that, and one of those times he mentioned me by name, "That was from a caller named Dan from Hot Springs, Arkansas, and I guarantee he's listening now." I was on his last show and got a little emotional even though he warned everyone not to be, and I regret that. When his show ended he sent me an autographed portrait with the words, "To Dan Williams, a real favorite." It was destroyed when the apartment building I was living in burned to the ground a year and a day after Tom's death -- July 30, 2008. It hurts my heart to this day that both of them are gone forever. I could honestly cry right now, just thinking about it. I loved you, Tom. You kept my spirits up when I barely had anything but a radio to my name. Well, never mind, I am crying.

The original SNL cast will always be the best for me. Especially Bill and Gilda and of course John. Bill has always seemed to be just an easy going guy and it comes thru when he talks. Always has great stories. He can be funny without even trying to be, the expressions, the timing. Love the SNL cheeseburger scene where he doesn't say anything he just keeps nodding his head like he understands what Robert Klein is telling him and he comes back with Cheeseburger!

I met him at Mayo Clinic in 2000. In the bloodwork area. I saw him in a waiting room. He was reading the local newspaper. And I didn’t want to bother him. But as I was called in. I couldn’t help myself. I touched his shoulder and said Mr Murray I’m a huge fan. I loved The Todd and Lisa sketches. And as I was walking out and he was walking in he gave me the Todd face and he said Thank You stop it NO I WONT GIVE YOU A NUGGY. Everyone stopped to stare and I just said ok glad we cleared that up. And he smiled and kept walking and so did I. I went home and told everyone I knew I met him.

@@maryallison0509 Great story, thanks for sharing! He walked into the Kennedy Center on the night he was to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. On his right was the red carpet with the press, on the left his fans behind a rope. He walked over to the left and shook hands with each person standing in the front of the group, thanking them for coming. He finally got to me and I blurted out, "I love you!" and he smiled and shook my hand. I was the last person he greeted, and then he walked over to the press side. There are few notable people who I really wanted to meet, and he was one of them. A fun moment!

It's interesting to me that Tom Synder's lack of a studio audience and "intimate conversation" style of interview seemed so odd and ill-suited for the times then. He kind of slipped away into obscurity after being replaced by Dave with the old Late Night show following Johnny. I think for a time they even gave him an audience to make it more standard, which was not a good fit for him. He was off TV for years and then had a comeback here following Letterman after the move to CBS before eventually being replaced by another standard late-night talk show with Kilborn, who was the shits, and eventually Ferguson, who was good. I learned all this later; I was 13 in 1997, and you couldn't have paid me then to watch this over Letterman or Conan. But now, this style is actually what we have with podcasts, and it's the Carsonesque nightly talk show format that seems dated and out of place. Snyder was ahead of his time.

Before anyone puts this amazing but troubled performer as poster boy for “What a nice guy Bill is” one must read his “Feuds and allegations of misconduct” in his Wikipedia bio. Bill did not like working with actors who thought too much of themselves. In "What About Bob" Richard Dreyfuss hated Murray because Dreyfuss acted like he was above the average person (and Bill saw how Richard treated people that way). Bill went out of his way each day to make Dreyfuss miserable on the set. In a recent interview Dreyfuss still called Bill "A Drunken Irish Bully".
