The mark of an intellectually honest person is the degree to which they are willing to change their mind. Dr. Norton has a track record, as he has described here, of being amenable to emerging evidence. Its a refreshing thing to see in the health and fitness space. So often the health and fitness arena can devolve into dogmatic camps that refuse to concede any point to the other side, no matter well argued that point is. Layne's attitude is what we need to see more of. This is why his fan base is growing, even despite the fact that he may demolish many of their cherished beliefs. People who value intellectual honesty know Layne's intentions are noble.

Been following Layne for nearly 10 years and seeing these changes as they’ve happened has always been enlightening. No attachment to an idea, move on and work with new best idea. Has sources and is resilient to people who cry about being too sure of yourself. Layne is one of those guys, and he’s earned it.

As an MD expert in metabolic health, I find Dr Layne one of the most both evidence based and practical, comprehendible nutrition PhD’s providing actionable information out there. Period. I used to think the same about fasted cardio, and since changed my mind, just in terms of effectiveness. However I think there is still a benefit of fasted cardio in that, it can and does create a positive feedback loop for some folks. You're getting up first thing, putting some coffee on the Keurig and as soon as it's done you jump on the treadmill and put a podcast on. Doing that seems to boost overall compliance for some people. Just anecdotal tough.

Just commenting because Layne has made me a better, less neurotic and more competitive athlete. Optimizing your training and nutrition shouldn’t give you a complex, and as newer studies with more sensational reporting are published, I really appreciate Layne translating them into layman’s speak (especially when some puff-piece with a writer borrowed from the celebrity column does the headline ie ‘EGGs GIVE YOU CANCER AND SHRINK YOUR BALLS SAYS NEW STUDY’)

I spent hundreds of dollars on BCAA supplements when Layne was promoting them because I thought it would help build muscle. I would guess millions maybe hundreds of millions of dollars has been spent on BCAA supplements worldwide... wasted

Thank you for this great and honest update. I had a look at Dr. Tinsley paper on time restricted eating and resistance training because I am particularly interested by this subject. It should be noted that in this study the group assigned to TRE was eating on a 4H window and only the days they didn't perform resistance training. QUOTE: "On the 3 days per week that participants performed RT, they were allowed unrestricted food intake. On non-workout days (4days per week), participants were required to consume all calories in any four-hour window between 4 p.m. and midnight..." . As it is not what I was expecting to read I share it for those interested to the details and feasibility of TRE combined to RT on the same day.

Hello from the UK, Thank your for your content. It is very encouraging to find someone logically reviewing evidence behind the attention grabbing headlines. As a trainer it drives me mad when clients come to me asking about the lastest guru with a book to sell or Daily Mail article. Apologies for the rant. May I ask you if there is any consensus in the studies regarding people encouraging muscle protein synthesis specifically in people over 75 years (my client group). What is your opinion on leucine/bccas and sarcopenia. Getting the higher levels of protein in this group from diet is so difficult. Thanks in advance. Sally

Appreciate your ability to change your mind, always respectable. Can you comment on the cholesterol studies that show triglyercide/hdl ratios being low is a better indicator then high ldl. And also the new one showing a score of 0 CAC score with high ldl being very low risk. Wanted to know your thoughts?

Great video. Is there research on the behavioral impact of fasted cardio on food intake? Do people who are doing fasted cardio eat less? If I do fasted cardio instead of eating first, I do not end up eating more to offset later in the day, and therefore it leads to a reduction of calories. I choose fasted vs non fasted based on my caloric intake goals.

Did they control for ldl/hdl ratio in the mendelian randomization studies? I skimmed over the one in the description and they didnt seem to do this (correct me if i am wrong please). so what if these polymorphisms thst make LDL more bad are making a bad ldl/hdl ratio more bad?

I'm usually doing early & late intermittent fasting. Early breakfast with fibers and then later meals around 4.00-5.00 PM until evening. I found that there's hard to have enough fiber intake with very small eating windows, especially OMAD, that's why I don't recommend it to people. Fiber is important.

Thanks for the info about the LDL where can I read about this further? My husband has high ldl and he wants to get it down but he has all these people saying it doesn't matter (a lot of them are keto or heavy meat eaters).. probably because of old out dated info. But good to know that there's more definitive evidence that he should in fact lower it

Yeah beware those Keto crazies. There are some really great videos on KZfaq re Cholesterol. The one I really like is called How do statins work. Talks very clearly about LDL. Also as mentioned several other important factors: chronic inflammation without this risk is much lower and overall circulatory system health including blood pressure, heart health and level of plaque. I am genetically predisposed to borderline high LDL. My cardiologist did a suite of tests after blood work to see if I needed statins. As he said it’s easy for me to drop you LDL but this isn’t the point. He tested ergométrico, 24 hour ecg, ecocardiogram and very important ultrasound of arteries in the neck. After all this no statins

Best most effective thing to do is see a doctor and he or she will prescribe a statin. Generic versions are inexpensive. They frigging work. Of course he should also adjust his diet to reduce saturated fat. (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat don't raise cholesterol)

@@donwinstoni think lipid panel should be done a few times to get an accurate reading . doctor needs question your diet/lifestyle before meds are prescribed. I ate lots of eggs week prior to lipid test , my total and ldl soared and first thing doc said you need meds !!! No I didn’t need meds my went back down to my normal levels around 180-200 after refraining from eggs for 10 days. ldl dropped as well . Doc was wrong to prescribe meds . Glad I knew better , be your own healthcare advocate. Statins are the most overprescribed medication - I now see why ! PCP are not cholesterol experts in fact most know very little . They go off the 10 year heart risk calculation, that’s about it !

What is your thoughts on using Yohimbine or rauwolscine while doing fasted cardio? Derek from MPMD says there is no advantage to fasted cardio, until you use an alpha-2 antagonist. Then the benefits become pronounced.

Just out of curiosity what was the ldl measured? Did it account for oxidised levels or just ldl in total, because from what I've read macrophages won't uptake ldl particals unless it's oxidised.

I watched some of the video. Maybe evidence re CHO vs fats vs keto vs fasting applies differently to different population groups with different objectives and needs. Fungs data re role of fasting ketosis (and re talks of fasting predominantly rather than preference of avoid CHO) is relevant to diabetics, the morbidly obese in terms of weight loss. As with Michael Mosely and his 1200 CHO VLCD diet, it seems that they are presenting data on weight loss regimens that seem to be achievable and doable. The question of how to alter diet in those that already are relatively healthy maybe is not the group Fung is particularly relevant too.

On fasted cardio, I understand energy balance, but one thing Layne has stated repeatedly is that your body does not like to turn carbs into fat and research shows only 1-2% is from carbs. OK, so if you do fasted cardio which burns more fat and then eat only carbs and protein, even at maintenance, would this trick the system into more fat burning overriding energy balance? Or would the body force itself to use carbs and protein to make fat? Things that make you go humm.

Do they understand why ldl is an independent riskfactor? It's good to know it is, but it seems so strange to me that when X occurs and your ldl gets out of whack, you can fix that without dealing with X. Though I guess we see that in other issues, like allergies, where the symptom (unreasonable immuneresponse) is the entire problem. You can't take away the allergy but you can solve the problem when it arrises.

The study he threw up there on BCAA's was that there were no benefits during caloric restriction diets. What about benefits when you're not going out of your way to restrict your calories? Meaning what about BCAA's on a diet where you're eating a regular amount of calories for your activity level, age etc.

John meadows RIP, he spoke that he believed in EAAs, and intra workout nutrition. I do feel I’m in the best shape of my life at 36, although I’ve been the most consistent I’ve ever been, although I do intraworkout shakes, basically soo my drink the entire workout, has sugar, EEAs, creatine, a pump supplement as well. I take a few bigger sips at the start of my workout and then sip it slower or faster based on how far I am in my training along with how much of my shake is left.
