Despite how unrealistic it is, Hannah Montana was a great idea. It’s no wonder why it was so monumental for Disney

Just pointing out the original knock off was Sueña Conmigo which came out in 2010, is a nick show, as it was the entire plot that this girl wanted to participate in a talent reality show, but her dad wouldn't let her, so she put on a wig and auditioned with it under a fake identity, and I say this was the og knock off because, it came before the Violetta one and Violetta was clearly copying Sueña Conmigo rather than Hannah Montana directly, as in Sueña Conmigo the fake identity had a pink wig and was called Roxy Pop, and in Violetta the fake identity also wore a pink wig and was called Roxy, not so subttle Disney. However, it is a repeated plotline so.

Well, as a spanish-speaking person, I feel obligated to mention how terrible the acting is in most of these shows (which I'm not sure how obvious is to people who don't speak Spanish) honestly, it's kind of hilarious, still I think that just makes them more fun to watch.

I think "Soy Luna" also worked better because the wig was a high quality wig. It really looked like her hair as opposed to the ones in Violetta which were obviously wigs.

sueña conmigo was robbed from its rightful spot on the list lol. it's a latinoamerican nickelodeon show about a girl, clara, who has a famous alter ego named roxy and her adventures to hide this from everyone in her life. it was extremely popular back in the early 2010s, the songs were all girl bops. while the plotline sounds exactly like hannah montana, i still think it had a charm of its own. you should definitely check it out some time! great video though, love these longer videos!

For everyone debating over who copied who, I just want to mention Jem and Holograms from 1986. First time I saw Hannah Montana, all I could think was, Its just like Jem and the Holograms but with teenagers. Jem is animated, but the same idea. Jem is Jerrica's alter ego with pink hair...

I grew up in the 80s and when my kid started watching Hannah Montana my first thought was that this must have been a new take on the animated series Jem and the Holograms. But I bet this concept of a girl leading a double life as both a superstar and a normal girl has been a thing for years and years. The prince and the pauper has much of the same vibes. Jem is still "my" Hannah Montana, tho.

I remember how Soy Luna and Violetta (especially Violetta) exploded in Europe, it was insane where I live! Literally, every single girl in my class was excited for one of the early scenes where Violetta falls into Thomas' arms in the rain (at least I think his name was Thomas lol)

Tori Vega as Louise Nordoff in the "Freak the freak out" episode didn't last very long, it was not a real plotline but the scene was so ICONIC and i thought it was done really well too.

This reminds me of the episode of Austin & Ally where Ally wears a pink and blonde wig and names herself Roxy to hide her identity for some reason

You really need to do a video talking about Violetta!! It's such a great show, and don't get me started on the songs! As an Argentinian, it feels amazing that so many people around the world got to know about this series.

If anybody’s interested in a Japanese/anime version of this trope, I recommend PriPara!! Basically, all the girls in this one city, once they reach a certain age, get access to an area where they can become pop idols, called PriPara. It mostly follows this one band, SoLaMi SMILE, and specifically their member LaLa, who can’t reveal her identity because her school’s principal hates PriPara. It’s really cute!

interesting fact: Disney Channel South Africa has been airing Alex & Co and Violetta for years through an English dub.

I think the Canadian Nickelodeon show Make It Pop also had a plot line that would fit this trope It's about 3 girls at a boarding school who form a pop band, but for the first half of the first season one of them wears a mask in all of their performances and hides her identity because she doesn't want her strict dad to find out and think she's putting music above her school work

I also remember Ramiro from Soy Luna having his HM moment when he auditioned for the red sharks as the masked guy.

Sueña conmigo its the show that started this whole plot line in latin america, I remember when violeta came out and it was a disney's copy of sueña conmigo. And even before that we had Isa TKM and Isa TK+, she didnt had a secret identity but this show started the whole school kids singing, having bands, performing, etc on latin nick and disney. Also, I didnt understand the using of"bizarre" in the title, just because its from another culture and language doesnt mean that it is bizarre, for us in latin america this shows are pretty normal.

Hannah Montana has nothing to do with the secret identity trope in LATAM. It's pretty old even Hannah Montana it's more like a spin on Cómplices Al rescate and classic musical telenovelas. EEUU was interested in the concept or musical series for kids since "chiquititas" but Nickelodeon couldn't make it work and Disney end up being the channel that made it popular among English speakers

Hannah Montana always kind of reminded me of the anime full moon. Minus the main character having cancer and her friends being shinigami of course.

there's a german dcom named "rock it!" from around the same time period that also has a hannah montana plot. it's kind of like kally's mashup in that the main character julia goes to a conservatory and then joins a pop band with a hot guy she falls in love with. it features the banger "du wirst ein rock it sein" where the main character's friend dresses her up. the actual "hannah montana" song, though, is "wie die welt leuchtet."

You should give the show Chica Vampiro a try! It's not exactly about a girl hiding her identity but it's good alongside Julie and The Phantoms the original one from Brazil! I watch it back in 2013 and i still love it till this day (i refuse to watch the American one though).

Not gonna lie, from the title I was expecting something a little more outlandish and obscure. The shows you mentioned -- Violetta, Soy Luna, Alex & Co. etc -- are shows you've been talking about on your channel for ages now, and just them having people with secret identities who sing doesn't make them Hannah Montana knock-offs (if anything, the fact that most of them are set in prestigious art schools makes them more akin to something like Fame or Victorious). I'm not shaming you for wanting to talk about them, but I reckon you should expand your horizons a little more.

Haven't watched any of these shows, but I recall Bailey making up a Hannah Montana knockoff persona in a Suite Life on Deck episode and Mr Moseby as a rapper😂 Edit: there's also an episode of Just Roll With It which I don't watch but I only watched the episode because I saw a clip of Jason Earles scouting the girl character as the next pop star and it even implies it's actually Jackson when he subtly mentions Miley. Her pop star persona is more of a Billie Eilish knockoff than a Hannah knockoff but the references were too good to not mention

One of my favourite secret identity storylines is from a short-lived UK show called Britannia High where one of the students of BH (a performing arts school) has told his dad that he’s at a business school and tells his friends that he’s not well off and lives in a bad area. At his birthday, he has to do a two places at once bit when he sees family friends at the roller disco, and his friends find out the truth when he can’t keep up the lie and the family friends reveal that he isn’t poor he’s actually got a very rich father… So his friends go to his house which ends up being a mansion, and he has to explain to them that his dad doesn’t know he’s at a performing arts school and makes them lie about being business students, but his best friend is very upset by the betrayal and threatens to tell his dad the truth which panics him and he ends up telling his dad. His dad decides to take him out of the school but his friends get him to give him a chance to prove he should be there, and he does, although he’s not happy he let’s him stay at the school and it’s implied they stop speaking after that. Then during the last episode which is a live show, his dad meets him backstage and apologises before asking him to move back home and he decides to do just that. That took a lot more to explain than I thought, BUT that episode is my favourite (and you can tell because it’s the only episode on my DVD that won’t play properly because it’s damaged…) it has some really amazing songs in it, I Am Who I Am and Proud, which both make me really emotional, especially Proud which is the song he sings in front of his dad. I also always enjoyed the fact he was an openly gay character and you’d usually expect this kind of plot to revolve around him being gay with a homophobic dad but his dad is accepting of his sexuality and even questions his best friend if they’re dating, the show aired in 2009 so at the time it was nice to see a gay character’s storyline not revolve around his sexuality and hiding it! Sorry for this long comment, but I highly suggest Britannia High to anyone and everyone, it may be the nostalgia that I have for the show but it’s truly a masterpiece and deserved more than one season (it’s also the show where the footage of Ed Sheeran dancing badly in an audition come from because he auditioned for it 😂)

Every time I watch one of your videos (which are always amazing, where has this channel been my whole life) and you mention the Disney telenovelas I can’t help but think you would love Patito Feo. It was not originally made by Disney (although they were the main distributors), but it aired there and it was SO FREAKING POPULAR. Like, Disney made Violetta to make up for Patito Feo not airing anymore. Patito Feo (lit. Ugly Duckling) is about a countryside girl that goes to a private school that specializes in musical, but, of course, she’s bullied bc she’s “ugly” and the mean girl’s mom is dating Patito’s dad.... The drama is so convoluted, it’s amazing. And the songs are legendary. I may or may not have been bullied to the tune of “Gasolina” in elementary school, but it’s a banger. Patito Feo it’s the blueprint for Disney telenovelas, is a shame it’s practically impossible to find with English subtitles, it’s a classis and it would fit here so well

There's a longrunning german show called "Schloss Einstein". I barely watched it as a kid but instrestingly enough I did watch the part with the Hannah Montana like story line. There is this girl (Annika, if I recall correctly) who has a great voice but is too shy to sing in front of people so here roommate Liz tricks her into singing which she records and puts on the school radio. The next day everyone is wondering who this girl with the beautiful voice is. So after settling with the idea Annika creats this Persona Nika to find the courage to sing in front of people. I can't remember how it finally got revealed though ... But I enjoyed the storyline enough to watch the series just for that^^"

my favourite show as a kid here in belgium was ghost rockers, which is basically a hannah montana story especially season 1) but with an entire band instead of a single person. also it's about ghosts and murder. it's amazing.

In those times, I dropped Violetta at the end of season 1 so this whole Roxy thing is so wacky

I know it was like one episode but um if you've ever see Nick's the Loud House the rock sister Luna is forced to become a "pop" singer LuLu Loud for a contest she was in I think to meet her idol and her song is called What Have I Done which is a really good song... Idk if you'd count it though cause it was one episode so it's a one shot secret identity and Lulu has never returned.

there is a brazilian show called young hearts (malhação in portuguese) that's kinda similar to degrassi where we have a new set of characters every other season and in one season (2012 i think) i remember this character named gil that was a masked graffiti artist, it was a very hannah montana-esk type of situation

I don't see anyone mentioning it but Patito Feo (both the Argentinian and Mexican versions) had a double/secret identity plotline where Patito used her Halloween costume as a way for her to sing in front of everyone, and it went on for a while

There is this show called Backstage the has some of these elements in it, there's this blog called TMK that writes gossip about the school but no one knows who it is, there's Beckett in the second season where no one can know he's the teachers son, and there may be more I'm forgetting.

There's a German movie called Rock it! The main girl goes to a strictly classical music school where she plays the piano. She hears a band playing one day when she's out and about. The band is looking for an organ player so she goes to the audition and is picked. To do this she also creates like a new persona with the help of her new best friend. The movie has lots of cringe in it but still a good watch.

Bit disappointed that Sueña Conmigo wasn't included but at this point it's pretty hard to stream the show , so I get it.

I don't think you've done these before, but I would love to see you do content related to Winx Club, Miraculous, and How To Rock. Most particularly Winx Club to be exact. Like I would love to see you do something like ranking the ships, ranking the fairies, ranking the villains, ranking the transformations, etc. Winx Club is my favorite cartoon and you're my favorite youtuber so it would be great to get some Winx Club content from you. But yes I would also love to see Miraculous and How To Rock as well.

I sadly have to tell you that Diego did not recognize Violetta and Francesca because he has eyes on his face, but because he followed them. He actually explains that in the scene you showed at 4:32, which honestly pisses me off, because I was so happy to see that they gave a character two brain cells in this situation and he could just recognize them. I was so excited at the end of that episode, like, man, Diego IS the deal. But no, they had to explain it right afterwards by saying that "he followed them and that's why he knows", as if that were the only plausible reason why he could have actually noticed that and not because they are literally his girlfriend and exgirlfriend and he has well-functioning eye pupils. This pisses me off so much, as you can tell, and it's been permanently engraved on my brain, so when you said it I was like, yeah girl, I wished that that was the truth too, but it isn't and it sucks and I will forever be mad about it. Literally, was it so hard to make him intelligent for no reason? WAS IT?? (Also, Violetta is my favorite show of all time, so I'm not hating on it, just this stupid screenwriting decision)

i felt so grow up when disney was emitting Soy Luna after Violetta, but I watched it anyway because the story was good! the other one i see in so many comments is "Sueña Conmigo", I don't remember a lot of the plot, but I liked it as a kid. And, there's another one that Disney was emitting here in latinoamerica (a little too late because i watched it online before that hahah) called "Find me in paris", about a girl hiding her identity as a princess in a ballet studio because she travelled in time and didn't know how to come back lol it has some issues but i was there for her identity reveal🙈

I just wanted to say that you're so on point about the Violetta one. I love Violetta with all my heart, and it REALLY was SO out of character to make Violetta fake her identity when she was not only a good person, but always wanting the truth/honesty and trying to do it herself too (even when she couldn't - like first season. she always felt so bad about lying to her father). And yes, I do know that initially she was only gonna do it once, but then couldn't control it and kept going, but is something I would never picture Violetta doing. I also think it was out of character for Léon not realizing it was her (even though i can understand, as I stated in other comment). I truly love them together - and always did - but I really wish this whole Roxy thing never happened. In my mind, I pretend it never happened, so I'm kinda fine with it, but that's the point (I think the only one) I can agree that was toxic between them. I really wish they hadn't done that, or that they had with different characters (it also seems so out of context of Francesca....). Anyways, great video

Does anyone know where or how I can watch Kally's Mashup with English subtitles? I've always been a fan of telenovelas and watched every Disney telenovela, but I recently discovered Kally's Mashup on KZfaq, fell in love with the music, and I would love to watch it but I can't find anything. Whether a website that already has it with subtitles, or if I need a VPN to watch it in someway I am also okay with that as well but I have no idea where to go. I would really appreciate it, thanks!

It's actually sjper popular as a trope. In fact, I think one of the originals could be Floricienta, in which Flor is in a band but has to hide it from hus employer and love interest, as well as the kids she babysits. For adults you have telenovelas such as La Usurpadora (although this one is more like Parent Trap) and a lot of others that use this trope.
